My mother passed away a few months ago but a few weeks before she passed she kept telling me that she really wanted to get her area rug cleaned. Anyway, after she passed i stored the rug in my garage. I am about to try this recipe to see how well it works. I'll take before AND after photos. Wish me luck.
I just found this. I cleaned the carpet around my front door and it did a wonderful job. It actually is better than the Rug Doctor shampoo. I add about a 1/4 cup of Downy fabric softener. The smell is wonderful.
Great video, very informative. Something your viewers need to know ... if your carpet contains wool fibers, don't use the spot cleaner with peroxide -- it'll bleach out any colors; use Dawn and alcohol (1 c. alcohol, 2 c. water, 1tsp. Dawn), instead.
I used this on carpets and it worked as expected. I had put a gallon in a garden sprayer to pretreat all the stains. My mother who recently passed was a heavy smoker. I decided to try it out on the ceiling in her old bedroom. 5 years of 2 packs a day had a lot of nicotine stain. I sprayed it on and within seconds it was breaking up. I wiped it down and it left nothing but clean white ceiling and the smell is so much better. It only took about 10 minutes to clean it all. I'll probably go over it a few more times just to make sure I got as much as I can.
I love the way your presentation is expressed and it's quick easy to the point and I so appreciate you you have saved me a lot of money right now carry on and God bless you

I have the Hoover power scrub deluxe which has two compartments one for the solution and one for plain water. I use ALL with oxi laundry detergent to mix my solution and add 1/3 cup Pet Stain remover that contains enzymes. In the clear water side I add 5-8 oz Odoban. I use the cucumber melon or the linen scent and they both work great! It's a pain to have to go over the same area to rinse but once I finally started to rinse my carpet after shampooing it really did make a difference and helps keep new dirt from sticking as much. Off white carpet here, I could not believe how dirty this carpet really was until I brought a job site light into the room to give a proper inspection, as the room is rather dark. WOW! I had just enough Rug Doctor to make a pass or two, so here I am. I did add some Folex carpet cleaner to the mix, 2oz, and pre-spotted with it too. Holy Smokes Batman! This stuff works! I can make many more gallons, I think I spent around $7 for all of the ingredients, less the Folex, which I had to purchase at Target for another $7. $14 all in, I am not complaining. Thank you for the video! Going to let her dry a bit and do another pass!

I used to clean carpets commercially and one of our sales pitches was we did not use any detergent which leaves a residue which will clean your shoe soles or feet. We used a softening agent which was very effective then finished off with a spot guard spray. Your formula uses a very small amount of detergent, however.
You're correct about it using a very small amount of detergent. We do recommend thorough rinsing and blotting. We also recommend using plain water first and only using this solution if the stain won't come out with water. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Yes! Hot water alone, especially if the stain is fresh and not set. I've done this many times using my little green machine following my young child around. Lol
I use a very similar homemade solution. Only difference is that i add roughly a cup of folex carpet spot remover as well. Works better than any of the expensive cleaners i have used in the past.
We just suck it out with our carpet cleaner. However, we borrowed a friends carpet cleaner and they had a water rinse cycle. Here's a link to it on Amazon: amzn.to/2VOBI0F It has 2 reservoirs, one for cleaning solution and one for clean water to rinse with.
I definitely want to try this!! I saw a video of a guy that had a DIY solution for Deep cleaning his car seats/rug and I thought it was awesome. For all those who cant get the LA Totally Awesome, Im curious if they can actually prepare a Baking soda sprinkle on the carpet first, then use a vinegar spray AFTER rubbing the baking soda into the fibers and in between the fibers.(I use that for cleaning when my dog vomited) Then you can use Steves solution - (substitute Oxyclean for the LAs Totally Awesome) and just prepare the rest of Steves solution minus the LA(powder) and LA cleaning solution. Im assuming the Baking soda and Vinegar will do what the LA products would do (only you have to add it to the floor first and allow he vinegar/baking soda mix to sit for at least 15minuts because using the rest of Steves solution. Great work! Im so eager to try it!!
Our eldest daughter was over at our house yesterday and had just cleaned her carpet using this solution. Her husband came home and was amazed at how nice the carpet looked. You're going to love it.
My Bissell has a small "solution tank" separate from the clean/dirty tank. Do I put this cleaning solution in the solution tank or the main water tank?
THANK-YOU! I need this today! Question: After watching your pre-spotting video, I noticed that you did not mention adding water to the Dawn and Hydrogen Peroxide solution. Is this the case? Do I use it full strength like that?
Yes, correct Use it sparingly. If you're using it on a carpet rinse with a clean rag and water. For clothes we just spray it on, let is sit for a whiel and then put them in the wash.
That's not been our experience - we've cleaned the carpet in several rooms using this solution and they look great. If you are concerned, just be sure that you use a machine that does a good job rinsing. We just borrowed one that does that very thing. It's a top rated Hoover Power Scrub carpet cleaner and is on sale at Amazon for $122. amzn.to/2V8k1tC
@@MoneySmartFamily it would have been nice if you would have just provided the link in your response. You have so many videos to look through I couldn't find it.
Great solution! But let's not forget the hard working machine. After use, empty out any left over diy/store bought cleaner from the dispenser, rinse with fresh water and run the machine outside flushing out the chemicals.Dry and store. My sis left the remaining solution in their machine, months later it turned into some gunky mess clogging it up.
Does this recipe make a gallon of concentrated solution (to be added with more water into the reservoir)? I’m using a compact Hoover shampooer and if I use the Hoover brand solution, the instructions say to fill with 1 gal warm water and only an ounce or so of solution. I tried this DIY version and I’m still rinsing with plain water multiple times, but the carpet is still stiff when dry. There still seems to be a lot of soap in the carpet after multiple passes with plain water. Doesn’t seem like anyone else in the comments is having this issue. It was a little better when I cut the laundry detergent amount by half.
The oxi productions your using what is the equivalent in the uk 🇬🇧 ??? looks great if you can get the products I don’t want to be paying vax prices all the time 👍👍

@@sonupatel4585 Give it a try - See the recipe here for the amount to use. Use this at your own risk. It should be okay, as we have used it on 2 different Hoover machines, but we're not responsible for any damage. Hello I have another question for you so I tried shout laundry stain remover on my carpet thinking it would work out perfectly instead it left a big brown stain on my carpet how do I remove this please get back to me
That's a tough one. Try rinsing with water first and blotting dry. If that doesn't work, give this a try on a small area. Be sure to rinse it totally out.
Love the video and just mixed up some solution with said dollar store products to try as well. I’ll be using this stuff with a Bissell big green machine, which is a single pre-mix solution tank style unit. My question is....when you use this solution, do you go over your previously cleaned areas with a rinse pass of some sort? Thanks again.
Just bought a house with heavy soiled carpet in the Master suite, I will be doing this tomorrow... I'll take before and after pics and update my comment. 😊😊 thank you for this sincerely, A Penny saving mama 😉
Would it kill you to watch the video, or does 4 minutes take just too much time out of your day? Actually, I don't think the info will do you any good, as you'll have no time to make use of the solution.
Kerri For your information I did watch the video and if I am asking a question it’s because I didn’t catch that info but what is it to you anyways? If you don’t have the answer for it then don’t answer and move along with your bothered ass. Did I say “hey Kelly do you know the answer?” No, I did not. So before you are quick to comment rudely mind your business if you don’t have the answer I’m looking for!
@@EveDoll154 - How did you not catch the info? The man literally poured the ingredients right into the water, right in front of your eyes. Even if you were just listening, you can tell by his words that he was adding those ingredients into the water. Admit it, you didn't even watch/listen to it.
Kerri Like I said what is it to you? Mind your own and move along if you were bothered by a comment. How about you just scroll past it. Wouldn’t kill ya would it? I do it everyday.

I use a very similar homemade solution. Only difference is that i add roughly a cup of folex carpet spot remover as well. Works better than any of the expensive cleaners i have used in the past.
Never heard of Folex - sounds like a great idea.
Folex is amazing!! It's gotten years-old stains (including coffee) out of our carpet with no color change, I love it 😍
Worked great for me, thanks!
That's great - thanks for sharing.
Excuse me good sir but I have to say your carpet looks amazingly clean!
Thank you!
Worked great. Bedroom smells like fresh linen. Thanks for posting this.
You're welcome! Glad to hear it. We love that smell!
Used Dawn Platinum orange dish soap and all other ingredients. Worked perfectly.
Can you clean upholstery couch will it leave residue any reason to rinse.
This certainly could work. Try a spot in an unseen place first!
This works, you don't have to use the exact products shown, similar ones work but don't use laundry soap with bleach.
Good point about NOT using bleach products.
Thanks for this. Do you do rinse the solution out of the carpet or just absorb the solution?
We just suck it out with our carpet cleaner. However, we borrowed a friends carpet cleaner and they had a water rinse cycle. Here's a link to it on Amazon: amzn.to/2VOBI0F It has 2 reservoirs, one for cleaning solution and one for clean water to rinse with.
I definitely want to try this!!
I saw a video of a guy that had a DIY solution for Deep cleaning his car seats/rug and I thought it was awesome.
For all those who cant get the LA Totally Awesome, Im curious if they can actually prepare a Baking soda sprinkle on the carpet first, then use a vinegar spray AFTER rubbing the baking soda into the fibers and in between the fibers.(I use that for cleaning when my dog vomited)
Then you can use Steves solution - (substitute Oxyclean for the LAs Totally Awesome) and just prepare the rest of Steves solution minus the LA(powder) and LA cleaning solution.
Im assuming the Baking soda and Vinegar will do what the LA products would do (only you have to add it to the floor first and allow he vinegar/baking soda mix to sit for at least 15minuts because using the rest of Steves solution.
Great work! Im so eager to try it!!
We've never tried baking soda and vinegar on a carpet. Did it clean up okay without leaving residue?
How much oxiclean to use? The scoop you used is smaller than the scoop that comes in my oxiclean tub.
Will this solution clean filtration soiling around the edges of the baseboards?
Not sure what filtration soiling is. Test it in a small, inconspicious spot first.
Anyone happen to know the scoop size for the oxygen orange powder. I just bought it from the dollar store and it’s missing the scoop.
Hello can i use this on car seats and carpets?
I have - test first in an obscure area.
@@MoneySmartFamily okay thank you
Do it works on car seats and Floors
Can I use it on a dark carpet?
Test an out of the way place first to be sure!
Thank you for the video and help! You saved me a bunch of money! 🙌🙌🙌
You're welcome Kyle!
The branded carpet cleaning liquids are so expensive. Thanks for sharing the video...we are going to try it out today.
Our eldest daughter was over at our house yesterday and had just cleaned her carpet using this solution. Her husband came home and was amazed at how nice the carpet looked. You're going to love it.
Really good video love this kinda stuff :) rock on!
awesome, i was going to look into making a solution myself a few days ago, then I forgot to look it up but stumbled on this video.
Great to hear! Did it work for you?
You should add a bit of fabric softner. It helps keet the carpet from drying out and smells great.
Thanks for the tip!
Is there any substitute for the La total awesome cleaning solution? I live in Australia and they don’t sell it.
Try another all purpose cleaner - be sure it doesn't have bleach in it.
instead of adding the cleaning solution to the water resevoir, would it work better just to spray the cleaner on the carpet?
You could try that .
My Bissell has a small "solution tank" separate from the clean/dirty tank. Do I put this cleaning solution in the solution tank or the main water tank?
Probably in the solution tank. But read the directions. Put it wherever you would put store-bought cleaning solutions.
John Gronber
Actually, Bissel says to only use theirs, of course.
Is this save?
Yes, how'd you guess.
Thank you, I love Tide, I've been using it for 39 years.
Great to hear! We love how it smells. It's so fresh.
Is it true that laundry or dish detergents leave a residue on the carpet, making dirt stick to it more?
That's not been our experience - we've cleaned the carpet in several rooms using this solution and they look great. If you are concerned, just be sure that you use a machine that does a good job rinsing. We just borrowed one that does that very thing. It's a top rated Hoover Power Scrub carpet cleaner and is on sale at Amazon for $122. amzn.to/2V8k1tC
@@MoneySmartFamily oh nice that's good to know thanks a lot 👍
Thanks man, that really helped!!
Gona try it this weekend. Thanks.
Let us konw how it works for you.
Hey! This really works thank you for the video
Whitney - Thanks for leaving a comment . Glad this carpet cleaner worked for you. Share this video with your friends - they'll love you for it.
Outstanding explanation, and easy to follow directions! Nicely done,
Thank you Halsey!
Can this be used for upholstery??
Yes it can, see our upholstery video.
Great words, thanks Jim!
Every carpet cleaner is different. It sounds like you're figuring out what will work best for yours.
Watched your video went to dollar tree 15 minutes after, to get everything lol.. thanks!!
You're going to love it.
Love your videos nice job I'll be cleaning my rugs this week
Thanks Zandra!
Very nice video. Highly appreciated. Always loved a good cleaning carpet.
Me too!
You think this could be used in a Bissell spot pro?
I'd give it a try on a small area and see how it does.
Worked great thanks
Glad it helped
The oxi productions your using what is the equivalent in the uk 🇬🇧 ??? looks great if you can get the products I don’t want to be paying vax prices all the time 👍👍
The oxi products we used were from or 99 cent and dollar stores. There should be a recipe out there on the internet for creating this.
What if I want to fill a 3 gallon bucket. Do I triple the recipe?
Yes, triple it.
Sir, I can’t find last 2 products. so will u pls let me know wt can I use instead ? Thanks.
Use a general purpose liquid cleaner - that doesnt have bleach in it and OxyClean.
MoneySmartFamily I have Lysol all purpose cleaner. Would that work? And how much ? I am asking bcoz I just bought new carpet vacuum cleaner and I don’t want to ruin it.thank u.
@@sonupatel4585 Give it a try - See the recipe here for the amount to use. Use this at your own risk. It should be okay, as we have used it on 2 different Hoover machines, but we're not responsible for any damage. Do your research and if the manufacturer is explicit about only using their solution - I would do it their way. moneysmartfamily.com/money-saving-tips/diy-carpet-cleaner/#rug-doctor-copycat-solution
MoneySmartFamily.okey. Thank u so much for replying 🙏 . I will follow your recipe.
Thank you I always love your video
Thanks for the kind words jessie!
@@MoneySmartFamily okay thank you very much
Doesn't hydrogen peroxide bleach the fabric ?
this worked brilliantly, thanks
Glad you liked it. We use it all the time now.
We didn't use a rinse, just let the carpet cleaner suck up as much as possible.
Rick Pazmino
Avoid the Oxiclean
We haven't, but you could.
MoneySmartFamily
You apparently don’t understand that the way you recommend using it depletes its bleaching capability, wasting it.
Thank you for sharing. Will try it
You will love it!
Just bought a house with heavy soiled carpet in the Master suite, I will be doing this tomorrow... I'll take before and after pics and update my comment. 😊😊 thank you for this sincerely, A Penny saving mama 😉
Terrific Christina!
Do you put this straight into the vacuum or do you dilute the solution with water inside the vacuum water bucket?
@@EveDoll154 -You don't, obviously.
Does it work on old spots?
Theresa this shampoo cleans really well, but if you have old spots, checkout our spot remover in the word box above!
Hi I have a pure wool+cotton rig
Would your ingredients work! Thanks. Cathy
It should, but test first on a small area.
NOOOO! You cannot use OxyClean on wool. This guy has no clue.
Thanks. However since you didn't do a comparison test, we can't be sure how yours compares with expensive brands.
Good question. We have used the store bought brands and see no difference ... expect the cost. Our solution costs about 25 cents per gallon.
That is great 👍
How much hydrogen peroxide & dawn dish soap go into your pretreat solution?? Any water?
The solution mixture is in the show notes and on our website: moneysmartfamily.com/money-saving-tips/diy-carpet-cleaner/
Thank you sooooooooo much, it worked!
Hooray, love to hear this!
Thank you for the content..
Welcome!
Thanku.
I will buy that today
Go for it!
Thank you Sir!
