Matthew Shepard, in full Matthew Wayne Shepard, (born December 1, 1976, Casper, Wyoming, U.S.-died October 12, 1998, Fort Collins, Colorado), American college student who was severely beaten because of his sexual orientation and was left to die in 1998. He was discovered and hospitalized, though he succumbed to his injuries. His death, which was evidence of the physical danger that homosexuals still sometimes faced in the United States, played a key role in the 2009 passage of legislation that expanded federal hate crime law to include violence committed because of the sexual orientation of the victim.
Shepard’s father was an oil rig inspector who worked in Saudi Arabia. Matthew attended high school in Casper, Wyoming, and at the American School in Switzerland before matriculating at the University of Wyoming at Laramie, where he studied foreign relations, languages, and political science. On campus Shepard had been open about his sexuality, and he was involved in the university’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) student association. On October 7, 1998, Shepard was befriended by two men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, who were posing as gay in order to lure him away from a local bar. They drove him to a rural area where they tied him to a fence, administered a brutal beating, and left him to die in the cold. Shepard was discovered 18 hours later by a bicyclist and was rushed, still alive but in a coma, to a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he died four days later. McKinney and Henderson were found guilty of murder.
Shepard’s death attracted widespread attention, not only in the small town of Laramie, which had a population of fewer than 30,000, but also across the country and around the world. Although federal laws at the time covered hate crimes based on race, colour, religion, and national origin, none included sexuality or sexual orientation. In 1998 Wyoming was one of 10 states that had no hate crime laws to protect specific categories of people. Shepard’s death was cited by figures within the gay rights movement as clear-cut evidence of the need for more-expansive federal hate crime legislation. In 2007 the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (later dubbed the Matthew Shepard Act) was introduced to address these shortcomings in the law. Although the bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, it was delayed because of widespread Republican opposition, including from U.S. Pres. George W. Bush, who threatened to veto it. In 2009 a modified version of the bill was finally approved by both the House and the Senate. Later that year U.S. Pres. Barack Obama signed the legislation, which was officially known as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009; Byrd was an African American who was brutally killed by three white supremacists in 1998.
Shepard was memorialized by the Matthew Shepard Foundation, an organization begun by his parents, Dennis and Judy, with a mission to “replace hate with understanding, compassion, and acceptance” through various educational initiatives. Shepard was remembered in the play The Laramie Project, a chronicle of his death composed of interviews with Laramie residents that was created by the Tectonic Theater Project shortly after his death. Shepard was also the subject of two television movies-The Matthew Shepard Story and The Laramie Project (both 2002; the latter is a version of the play). Because of concerns that his grave site would be vandalized, Shepard was not buried until 2018, when his ashes were interred in the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

I completely remember when Matthew Shepard passed. Not too long after, I saw Elton John in concert at Madison Square Garden. He talked about Matthew and was furious with what happened. Then dedicated “Don’t let the sun go down on me” to him and had a picture of Matthew on the screens. It was so beautiful and moving.

And it was a carefully contrived piece of theater that Elton John knew would move his audience to tears. Learn to look behind the facade and you'll soon understand how often your emotions are shamelessly manipulated. Or on second thought, perhaps you won''t and never will.

I don’t think he could ever have imagined he’d be buried in this beautiful Cathedral and be of such national importance, but he is. He’ll almost be 50 today had he lived, but because of two pathetic little guys who were just so filled with hatred for someone they didn’t even know.. he and his family and friends were all robbed of all those precious years. RIP Matthew.

The murder of Matthew Shepard was most definitely a hate crime. His parents feared desicration of his grave, thus his internment in Washington DC. I like to think that Wyoming has become MUCH more accepting since 1998. There is no room for hate here at all whatsoever anymore. 🙏✌️🤗💕

I noticed on the stonewall that there were numbers on it, I went and ran my hand over it and it was in braille. I immediately got chills. thank you Scott for posting this. I have followed the path of Matthew since that fateful day. the note you made in the description on how his remains came to be placed in a crypt in the cathedral is partially true. Having discovered his parents feared what might happen to his grave was the reason his parents had not given him a final resting place anywhere, is what led cathedral officials to offer them a crypt. During the memorial service the day his ashes arrived, the Priest giving the memorial address noted he had no real home to rest until that day. Then said through tears "Welcome home Matthew. You are HOME." I am so glad it truly is a wonderful place. Thank you also for the views inside. WOW! AWESOME! Being able to see it in person is a dream of mine. So nice to see maps and directions are in use. And very accesible. I often watch portions of the Sunday service and recognize many sights. BUT you have shown how vast the whole complex is and areas I did not know about. Thank you again.

Thank you for covering Matthew’s story. This was beautiful. I appreciate how respectful you always are…
This case still gets to me. He was just 3 years older than me and so young. This was one of the worst hate crimes I’ve ever studied. My heart still goes out to Matthew’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him.

Matthew meant (and means) a lot to us in Northern Colorado. There was a vigil at the hospital the night before his death, and the hospital grounds were packed with those who wanted to sing to the family. We continue to miss him dearly. Thank you, too, for talking about Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan Macy, whose story changed my life as a child. Much love.

This is a beautiful cathedral inside and out. I would have been lost as soon as I got in the front door! I remember I was very concerned about a friend's son that still lived in CO during that time it was very frightening as his parents had moved back to OH but Ryan was alone out there familywise. RIP Helen Keller, Annie Sullivan and Matthew Shepard. I loved that inscription "you are safe at home now". Just beautiful.

This was such a beautifully made video. The cathedral is absolutely stunning. Your right, no matter what the reason, Matthew did not deserve this. I believe God made us all and he loves us all. And God will be the one to judge us all. In the meantime, I'll just try to love everyone. Btw, two of my good friends as a teenager were gay. One of them did my makeup for me the for the very first time and did a better job than I ever could. The other one was my old boyfriend's brother who I found out died from Aids in 1993 and it broke my heart in to a million pieces. I don't care what people do in their personal life, I only care about how they treat others in their public life. That's what matters to me. As far as Helen Keller goes, what an incredible woman. Can you imagine going through life with no sight, hearing, or speech? I have much empathy for handicapped people. My uncle, who was blind lived with my family almost all of my life and he was also the smartest man I ever knew. If he had taken an IQ test, I believe he would have been labeled a genius. We used to call him uncle brains and my dad used to call him the professor. He's the one who got me through school. And when my daughter needed help with her homework, she used to call him too. When he helped me, I got straight A's. My dad was also in charge of charity work for the Special Olympics with the Knights of Columbus. So, I saw and learned lot in my life growing up. Mostly that the wrong people are labeled as handicapped. The haters out there are the ones who are handicapped. RIP to bot Matthew and Helen, two of the greatest people who ever walked the face of this earth. ❤💐

The National Cathedral does take your breath away when you see it, and your video captures that. The gothic architecture with its towers, spires, gargoyles, is just stunning. I have not been to see there since Matthew Shepard has been interned in columbarium and the plaque placed outside. He was laid to rest there recently, about 5 years ago. For those interested, there is an excellent play called The Laramie Project, that is very powerful. Appreciate you covering this resting place with acceptance, empathy, and love. Much respect & take care.
