I’m sitting down here in a country at the bottom of the Pacific, crying for the loss of a stranger. This world needs the people who bring the light and my best wishes to you, and to everyone who knew and loved him. As the poet wrote once, “he is gone and, for a while, nothing else matters”. Thank you for sharing. And your shawl is beautiful. Hope his dog is okay too.
Thank you so much! That's beautiful. Yes the dog is going to his mum and brother, thank you so much for asking! He had just gotten the new dog the day before after losing his two beloved pups over the last year. He named this dog Zulu, and he is a Husky-Boxer mix.
@@fairygodfatherknits Thank you for letting me know about Zulu. That sounds like an amazing combination of breeds. May he bring some quiet happiness to them - and vice versa too.
Aw Matthew, I know I've already said this separately but I am so very sorry for your loss. I'm actually pleased that you knit on your shawl after finding out. A lot of people would have put it away and never looked at it again, but I don't think your friend would have wanted that. You did the right thing for you and for him. It's lovely that you're dedicating this shawl too him and Im looking forward to hearing more about him in furture videos Lots of love ❤️
Aww thank you so much Kelly. I really feel like knitting can help with the grieving process, as it can with so many aspects of mental health! Thanks so much for your kind thoughts and words! ❤️
I’m so sorry for your loss I understand your shock my cousin died unexpectedly two Saturdays ago the wait to find out why is devastating isn’t it. Anchoring yourself in your knitting and dedicating the shawl to him is such a lovely thing to do. Im so sorry Mathew that this lovely soul friend of yours is gone
Thank you so much, and please let me offer my condolences on your cousin's passing as well! Yes there are so many levels between the shock and the grief and all of it. Thank you for sharing.
So sorry for your loss🤍so tough to lose a good friend 🤍love the colors of your shawl…wish you great comfort as you knit. It’s so helpful, and your piece will be extra special to you always 🕊️😘
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so nice that you are remembering him as you knit the MKAL. Your colors are so beautiful. Enjoyed your take on the clues. Your shawl from last year is beautiful. I love what you did for the middle section. Take care. 💗💗🧶🧶
Sorry for your loss. I hope the many memories help you through the rough moments. I am lucky to attend a knitting retreat next month and I am working on a slipover and a sweater designed by Tif Neilan as I will attend 2 of her workshops. 7 weeks ago my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer and things happened really fast. She died a week ago. We lived 3 months in 3 weeks and I was privileged to be aware of having limited time. Even if it was speeding up all the time. We were able to have a loving goodbye which helps. It is all raw one moment and just keep going the othet moment. I enjoyed the fiberchats/knitblog365 humans of mkal community they have going. It even made me pick yarn. So this weekend I might be casting on as the knitting and the inspiration that is going on in their zoom meetings (i watched them later on youtube) gives me some much needed light. Keep finding your glimmers of light where you can find them! Enjoy your mkal journey with all the ups and downs. It will be a very meaningful shawl
Thank you so much for sharing all of this and I am so sorry for your recent loss as well. It sound so special that you got to be with your mum during that time, as you say with the knowledge that time was limited. It sounds like a beautiful and special season. I haven't checked out the Humans of Westknits yet but I should do so soon! Thanks again for sharing all of this.
This is my first time seeing your videos, but I’m so glad you felt comfortable talking about your friend. There is no correct way to experience grief… comforting yourself by knitting and thinking about your friend is a beautiful way to take care of yourself.
Love how your West MKAL knit is coming along. You have inspired me to join the MKAL. Better late than never. Sorry to hear about your friends sudden death. I love that you’re dedicating the shawl to him❤
Better late than never! I love that! I have seen some friends who had to start late for a variety of reasons, and most of them were able to catch up! But of course there is no set pace or schedule, really. I hope you join in! ❤️
I’m so sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was an amazing man and friend. My MKAL is going slowly this year. I am just finishing my third semi circle, but I am also working 7 days a week at the moment. I had one day off, but did not knit anything as I was in bed with a stomach bug. I am enjoying watching your progress on this year’s MKAL. THIS IS MY 5th MKAL, I started with Slipstravaganza. I haven’t finished one on time yet. Maybe I will get caught up in this one. Anyway, happy knitting.
Thanks so much for this! I am sorry to hear about your stomach bug and hope it cleared up quickly! Well I know Stephen always says "embrace your pace," and I haven't finished one on time yet either! Here's hoping for this year, fingers crossed! I hope you are on to the wedges now and finding some time to knit around your 7-day-a-week work schedule!
Hi, this is my first time seeing you and I like your video a lot. I was knitting on my mkal clue2 as I had to stop knitting because of your loss 😔 I am sorry for it. Your tribute is such a wonderful idea! I wish you all the best .
Loss is so personal, some people need to talk and others don’t. Whatever feels right for you is good. I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so shocking losing someone like that.
Matthew, thank you making this thoughtful video incorporating your MKAL progress with the memory of your friend. It is almost poetic that your colour choices could be considered Halloween-like and he was a lover of the holiday. I definitely want to hear more about your friendship and we can enjoy the happy memories with you. ❤😘🫂 P.S. I am loving the shawl and your chosen colours. 😉🖤🧡
I just found your video, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear friend. Dedicating the shawl to him is a wonderful way to honor his life and to remember him, wishing you peace at this time x
Aww thank you! And I understanding falling out of love... it was a close call for me too! I hope you pick it up again but follow what brings you the most joy!
Thank you! I'm so glad to see you're doing well post-op as well! Looking forward to catching up on vids and being more active in the Discord group as well! Thank you so much for this. ❤️
I'm so sorry for the shock of you losing your friend. My closest friends are closer than family and I can't imagine what you're going through. It was a nice tribute to him at the end of this video.
Thank you so much. I feel the same way... especially in the queer community sometimes chosen family is the most important. I lost a friend like this 15 years ago and this is bringing up so much about that time... thank you so much for your kind words!
Thank you, big hugs! I definitely need to become more of a sock knitter! I somehow just never totally took to it, have only done the odd pair here and there!
So sorry to hear about your friend. Your shawl will be infused with your lovely memories of him and the times you spent together. Clue 2 has just dropped so I’m off to dive into it as Stephen would say. Re timing of Clue drop - for this and Geogradient mine arrives consistently at 9.37am Amsterdam time, so I just check my World Clock to see when I should expect it. ❤
Liking Clue 2 as I’m a fan of brioche But I did my first set of bubbles using 2 strands of mohair then I saw Clue 2 and knew I had to order more and find different mohair for the brioche was. So waiting for that order to arrive but should get 2 bubbles and 2 brioche done soon I also intarsiaed 2 lonely bobbles in hot pink which was a bit of a process😊
I’m so sorry about your friend. I am enjoying the SWMKAL, even more so now that it’s all on the needles. I found the joining of the semi circles to be a bit unwieldy. I love my colors this year which makes me happy. I am not always successful in that department. My Twists and turns looked like a candy cane.
Thank you so much for your condolences. I agree, once the whole thing was on the needles it was a lot more fun! Though I do find the very long rows a bit gruelling sometimes. I'm so glad you love your colours!
Hi! I will talk about it in my next regular Knitcast, but it is the Orbit by Janina Kallio. I will link to the ravelry page here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/orbit-4 It is a one skein shawl though I will say both times I knit it, I ran out of yarn before the end. But I'm sure the problem is with me rather than the pattern. It is really fun and quick; I did it twice!
So sorry for your lost 🫂... I think there will be sort of good vibe to implement a cheerful memory of your lost friend in every stitch you will make further in the kal. the beginning is looking great!❤

Wow your geogradient is beautiful with the entrelac I gave up on mine sadly I fell out of love with it but seeing yours is making me want to it again
Me too! That center square is stunning and goes so well with the dip stitch border. Hmmm maybe after I finish the current MKAL.
Aww thank you! And I understanding falling out of love... it was a close call for me too! I hope you pick it up again but follow what brings you the most joy!
I'm kind of already imagining doing another Go Go Dynamo in different colours! But there are so many shawls one could knit...
I’m looking forward to hearing more about Shaka, what a lovely tribute. I’m so very sorry for your loss, that was hard to watch but I’m here for it ❤

Oh wow, thank you for sharing that! "Weird flavour" is the perfect way to describe it! ❤️
Love you buddy! So sorry for your loss. I’m not doing the MKAL cause shawls take too long. I knit the sock MKAL
