@@RichBischoff Thanks Rich, found you here on UA-cam, and connected to your FB page. I'm learning the BTS_KTN-Mk2_eng03_W.pdf "Using BOSS TONE STUDIO For Katana MkII", and it's going to be quite the learning curve!
Katana 50 sounds good with the Tele, and you have it set well just off the knobs. Some reviews use Tone Studio software for EQ etc to get it sound ok, nothing wrong with fine tuning but good to know just the amp sounds good. I like that you just left the slight reverb/delay and skipped all the effects.
I got the MKII 50 watt for home practice and the Artist 100 watt with the foot switch for gigs. They are Great sounding amps. Im 53 and I have owned so many brand name amps and tube amps. I must say these amps cant be beat for the price and sound.

@@mikekaze7175 Lets say you're using a fender amp and it can model, or attempt to emulate other amplifiers or effects. Its like a multitool amp almost. Featuring different amp model sims, and effects built in too. Hope this helps
Sounded great, and it goes without saying you play great. The Boss Katana MKII is my one and only amp (tho I am new), has me completely satisfied. Not into pedals atm, but curiously one I am thinking of getting further on is the MojoMojo, as well as the Dark Matter. Since the Katana has all the fx you can think of already built in, the only reeason I might have for getting pedals is for stacking overdrives, since you can't really do that with the built in overdrives of the Katana 50 atleast, since it only allows you one overdrive/distortion effect natively. I hope you can get back to gigging soon!
It sounds really good. I hope mine sounds that good. I have a couple Hot Rod Deluxes and a few Mesa Boogies. They sound great, but probably overkill in small venues. I am in my 70s and my old roadies are in their 50s so dad is on his own! So the point of this epistle is "I hear ya!"
Great video Rich, great tones from a great guitar and amp set up, I love my Baja Tele and currently using the Katana air amp, great combo for great sounds. Thanks for sharing. Take Care.
Kick ass tones my friend. I wonder how much diff the tones front these effects built in and modeling sound from my Boss GT1. I may need this in my arsenal for reviewing guitars. Appealing to me is this and the Fender GTX 50
I think I’m going to get one! I’ve used a Blues Jr for the mostly smaller gigs that I do, but the amount of money I’ve put into it is diminishing returns at this point since it’s acting up again. At first I thought I would need footswitch, but based on your demo with pedals think I will just use live as pedal platform for time being with pedals that I know and like for classic and rootsy tones, can also use with acoustic.Nice playing!
Can someone help me with this? I bought a MKII 50 and I find the tone incredibly muddy I'm a newb so maybe its a question of master volume vs guitar volume etc. But I can't run my pedals through it without having to turn everything down like mad...seems quit muddy.
Just emailed my Sweetwater Rep as to whether this would work as a FRFR speaker with my Boss GT-1 and GT-100. I had asked him about the power amp in jack. He told me no and said I should get a Headrush. But the Headrush is 8" speaker and very directional. Guess he should watch a few of your videos.
Don't listen to him, that's with the power amp input it's worth. Provide a free plant response so I can plug your HeadRush directly into it. There's actually a video now on UA-cam with someone using their Helix through it with the cab sims on and off, sounds better with them on.
Bought it today with Roland gr 55 figured Id use it for gigs this spring and summer if we ever open up and have music gigs and bars open back up and get back to normal than covid19 shut down , musician are suffering we need to all get back to the stage ,tired of everything being closed ,during odd hours
I never thought I would want a Tele but yours sounds good.It also sounds really quiet as far as undesirable noises go. Or do you have noise cancelling pickups in the guitar? Is there ever a problem with single coil hum when you use a Telecaster?
Just played it today a young kid just bought. He had a strat with Seymour Duncan's HSS. Great combo nice amp. You can warm it up by dialing in everything, sounds just as good as my Marshall origin
Sounded great! Thanks for sharing. I’ll be ordering the Katana over the Spark after hearing this. Quick question- I currently use a Focusrite Scarlett 212, no recording software (I.e., Reaper), just Positive Grid Bias FX 2. I see you have a mic for your Katana. Would you recommend that I mic up the Katana with the mic going directly in to my Scarlett or go directly from the Katana to the Scarlett. I’m still somewhat new to using a PC as an amp component; I just want to avoid damaging the amp and/or my interface. Thx!
I was specifically looking for someone playing a tele through one of these - very curious because one of the main reasons to have a telecaster is the tone. Do you feel there is any disconnect in the tone as compared to using a tube amp?
Is that headphone out the same as a preamp out so I could run this into the main on my 100 Watt Roland Super Cube with a 15" Speaker? I do use my Super Champ X2 Head Preamp out that way now. Either way I like the sound very much and would likely use it clean most often! I own my own house and am in the woods but still at night I like the wattage reduction for playing at night not to bother neighbors! Also I play Stereo all the time I use my Super Champ X2 into a real good 10" cabinet and my Blues Jr. through an AB box for stereo, also i can switch on the Super Cube Roland so I'm coming out of a 10" and !2" tube and a 15" Solid State but fed by a Tube Pre Amp!
The hundred watts Katana has an effects loop with the helix you can use the four cable method my problem with the 50 watts is putting overdrive then reverb and delay once you put it in the lead or brown selection it sounds washy trying to get that sonic lead sound or a Brian May sound like the song You don't fool me. Not too crazy about the on board effects. My amps need effect loop. Now I use Blackstar mk ii 20 watts and two P A system great tone. Boss got great tone wish 50 watts had a loop effect be the best amp to buy
Do you feel the mids are too high all the time no matter how low you turn it down?... especially on the brown and lead channels. It almost feels as if it's hardwired to sound like that.
Thanks for the video. When you use an external overdrive and pull back on the volume, does it clean up and react in a way similar to a tube amp? Any insight would be most appreciated. Thanks again.
@@RichBischoff Was thinking about an Electro Harmonix "Hot Tubes" or one of the better "Klon" clones. Maybe a "Tube Screamer." Any thoughts on these? Thanks for the reply.
How's that Cambridge 50 in real world? I'm trying to talk myself between the Katana and the Cambridge. There isn't really many reviews of the Cambridge since COV stopped people gigging right after it came out. I need a practice/jam amp for use with speaker and headphones. Both of these look great.
When you are using this Helix down in your link below "Line 6 Helix Multi-Effects Guitar Pedal "to the Katana. How are you using it? You mentioned "line in" to the back of the K50. Does it cut off sound to the cabinet out put when you do? Live are you using the outputs from the Line 6 to a PA to the mains, while the Katana is still giving sound from the cabinet? Always watch your video's, thanks.
The mark 2 has a power amp in, like an frfr cab, so the response is flat, and the speaker sims from helix can color the sound. It sounds so good mic'd, when I eventually take it out live, I'll just tell the sound guy to mic it or run direct either way.
@@RichBischoff ok cool. I also have the Katana 2 50 w. Sooo it will produce sound out of the katana speaker and what other Jack's from the helox to the pa. Practice.... honestly I dont know. I have long fingers not necessarily big. I do know a guy with meaty fingers, he has to play guitars with a wider flatter fretboard.
Is this a good amp for let’s say like wanting to play metal music? I’m a big avenged sevenfold fan and I’m just trying to find a good amp mine is like 8 years old but I barely used it until now. If not do you have any recommendations for more of a metal sounding amp?
So I’m ALMOST sold on going out and buying one today for recording in my home studio. I see you have it mic’d with a 57, but may I ask if you did anything anything in post and what mic pre you are using?
It was between this and the spark for me. I could not keep both. They are both amazing but I went with the spark for all the features. But if I could have afforded it I would have kept both. That being said I do not gig.
No thin tone here. Amp sounds twice as big as it is. I have this and have had the boss mk2 and thr10 mk2 and the spark is my favourite. I would say tone wise the katana gives it a run but the spark with all of its features is just gold.
Thanks for this. Two questions, if I may. Is this the only non tube amp alternative to FRFR speakers out there that works well with pedals / multi fx. I mean at the lower budget end. Is there anything else that does the job in your opinion. Secondly, is the power amp in on the 50 Mk2 at least half as good, results wise, as the send return on the 100.
Great review! It sound realy good, maybe not as good as a tube amp,a little bit "dryer" to my ears in clean sound,With overdrive and distorsion,i don't ear any difference but i'm not listening in real condition
I've used this with a Gretsch guitar with broadtron (humbucker) pickups. Those pickups are inherently warm and round, matched with this amp with similar clean setting, and tone control a little bit higher than he has it, sounds really good.
I am a newbie bedroom guitar practitioner (notice I did NOT say player) and I have been looking at these amps. Being new to this, I have heard there is a break in period for the speaker...is that true and if so how many hours before its considered "broken in"?
Hey, you got one! That's the same model I have. PLENTY loud for the house(I don't gig). I do my 'tone sculpting' with the computer & have my 4 tones I need all programmed in - a squeaky-clean chorused clean, a roaring JCM 800-esque rhythm, a modern metal chugga-chugga & a fuzzed out stoner rock deal. I think a GT-1 would be perfect for the Katana to round-out a low-cost, pretty much no-limits rig(you might have to add another footswitch like the FS-6 or FS-7).
Just bought this amp today. Can you add physical peddles to this? Going for the U2 - Edge sound. Great playing and review! Totally confused on what an fx loop on the 100W is.
That review hit the spot for ne. I’ve had the 100 Mk II for a few months & spent some time using software to get tones but now I’ve just a really nice clean tone & run the pedal board through the front. Also, what’s your recording setup. I’ve tried direct recording with Katana & results have been really poor, very low volume or. I thing at all. I get on fine with the American Sound pedal through a Scarlett 2i2, tbh. Keep it up, Rich. Really interesting videos. 👍
Rich Bischoff Interesting! I also have the Katana 50 MK II and I feel like I’m constantly tweaking it (in the Tone Studio) and not quite getting the sounds I want but getting close. Maybe I should put a real tube screamer in front of a clean sound and see how that goes (just like you use it’s clean channel as a pedal platform). With your Tone Master review, I really dug the overdriven tone. May I ask what OD pedal(s) you were using? Thanks!
Do I hear ya about the heaviness? I had a very successful cover band in Boston but we only survive the year but in that year I made about $17,000 gigs I was dealing with a nagging shoulder problem actually both of them once I started doing everything with the other arm that became an issue Because I was out on Worker’s Comp. when I started the band because I worked for FedEx can’t do that job but bad shoulder even playing a guitar was pushing it, but bugging my fender, hot rod deluxe couldn’t do it I was paying people in the bar tell someone here 10 bucks bring my amp in to people I know and they’re like I don’t need your money it i’d be like just take it 10 bucks. I’m gonna make a lot of money tonight. You’re gonna get paid again when you would like it to my car you are someone else who’s here so that’s what I did but the reason that band fell apart. I went out to have shoulder surgery. I didn’t think I could get any worse than I was mistake I should’ve taken that time in rehab it my phone was ringing for months emails can you do a gig can you do a gig this is Boston annual Hall and over in South Boston, this beauty of Boston, one of those gigs from South Boston to Boston with no more than 3 miles apart 4 miles tops at the stretch. I don’t even think it being in a popular city that’s small just made for a very lucrative cover band first gig. The bartender was up by owner. Excuse me he was bartending Tuo, he was so thrilled. He gave us each 500 cash. We asked for 200 so it was a bum deal but my brother is bringing me a boss katana he just bought for me as I’m able to play again I sold that hot rod deluxe I was so disgusted, I even sold a beautiful 1984 Japanese squire Strat I sold them for peanuts that I was going to smash it. I was so heartbroken I paid $80 for that guitar the guy from Dean and Campbell guitars. It was the Campbell guy and my name is Campbell met daddy‘s junkie music and to buy one of these guitars because I was playing a little two guitar display and I’m like would you get that one and he said I’m Campbell and then we started talking I’m like I’m Campbell he said I tell you what because he lowered the price of those guitars in half and then like I just can’t afford it he charge me $80 for that 80 bucks asked me what I had in my pocket I said $100 he said give me 80 I’m gonna give you this Japanese squire. I didn’t know it was so valuable. He said these are very very after I said it feels great. he said I love it, this is gonna go on the wall at least $400. I’ll give it to you very grateful actually on Facebook look up James Daniel Campbell when you see a picture of me with my MIJ squire Stratocaster. It was a Blackie maple neck I didn’t think I like maple necks the way the string snaps off the maple I love it but I’m psyched. Thanks for this review. I can tell you being honest and you’re not getting paid to do this. Even if you are, I can tell you being honest Marty from my music he said the same thing all right big guy take it easy. PS I’m gonna watch this video as a guitar lesson. I was nice double stuff you do. Excuse me double stops iPhone can never understand the Boston accent. All my buddies have the same problem.
No, the gafc is for Katana 100. Boss has a cheaper foot switch to choose from the 4 available patches on the 50, but individual effects must be accessed & controlled from the top of the amp. On the web I've seen ads for more expensive 3rd party switches with better ergonomics (more buttons) but same limits on controls.
Just bought one (on the way) for use with an acoustic/electric 6. You've explained a lot of features, effects and given me a bunch of info and ideas . . . other than that the review really sucked! Just kidding, not at all. When I get mine tomorrow I'll be way ahead thanks you and your excellent sound work. It's gonna be fun! 🕺🕺🕺

It was between this and the spark for me. I could not keep both. They are both amazing but I went with the spark for all the features. But if I could have afforded it I would have kept both. That being said I do not gig.
Hi Diego. I'm looking at both of the same amps. Sound-wise, which do you prefer and why? I would appreciate your input. Thanks.
Diego Fiorillo How is the spark I hear it takes awhile to be delivered good practice device but tone is my concern hate thin sound good luck
No thin tone here. Amp sounds twice as big as it is. I have this and have had the boss mk2 and thr10 mk2 and the spark is my favourite. I would say tone wise the katana gives it a run but the spark with all of its features is just gold.
@@diegofiorillo6412 Thanks Diego. You just made it harder for me. 😁
enrique veloz 😂😂look you can’t go wrong with either. Depends on what features are important to you
Thanks for this.
Katana is the best sounding budget amplifier that sounds great with pedals.
@@RichBischoff Thanks.
Can i connect pedals like tuner, noise suppressor and distortion into Power amp in at the back? Is it safe (will it sound better)?
Thanks 😊
What do you think of it compared to the 11R you have sitting behind it?
Two different beasts, but I think the Katana mkii probably has more organic amp sounds when plugged in direct.
Great review! It sound realy good, maybe not as good as a tube amp,a little bit "dryer" to my ears in clean sound,With overdrive and distorsion,i don't ear any difference but i'm not listening in real condition
Replace speaker with Waza model from artist version, watch out🎶
I've used this with a Gretsch guitar with broadtron (humbucker) pickups. Those pickups are inherently warm and round, matched with this amp with similar clean setting, and tone control a little bit higher than he has it, sounds really good.
Dear friend, In between Marshall Code 25/50, Boss Katana 50, Blackstar id core 20/40 and Marshall 30gfx, which one do you prefer most?
Depends on what I'm doing. For sound the Marshall. For convenience Katana.
I am a newbie bedroom guitar practitioner (notice I did NOT say player) and I have been looking at these amps. Being new to this, I have heard there is a break in period for the speaker...is that true and if so how many hours before its considered "broken in"?
Idk, mine sounds fine, and I've played less than 2 hours on it. Ha!
@@RichBischoff cool thanks!
Check out this video, does a solid job of explaining how to use an amplifier's effects loop.

@@JoelWalker1229 Thanks! That PMTV UK video is a great crash course in explaining the effects loop!
@@strumlead8741 You're welcome! Glad that helped.
Would you say it takes pedals well without having an effects loop?
Yes check my boss katana live videos out. ua-cam.com/video/IoGIGvOFQ6w/v-deo.html

distortion and od sound too fizy, i didnt like it
Why isn't the headphone jack a micro Jack like the axillary out ? who has 1/4 inch Jack on their headphones anymore?
Adults with real stereos 😉
I've got the mk2 100 1 12 it's great has a 5 50 100 watt setting and on booster Iv e played some gigs on 5 watt lol
Do tube amps have that hiss hum like the Katana had??
How change from the bank a to bank b of effects?
That review hit the spot for ne. I’ve had the 100 Mk II for a few months & spent some time using software to get tones but now I’ve just a really nice clean tone & run the pedal board through the front.
Also, what’s your recording setup. I’ve tried direct recording with Katana & results have been really poor, very low volume or. I thing at all. I get on fine with the American Sound pedal through a Scarlett 2i2, tbh.
Keep it up, Rich. Really interesting videos. 👍
Was micing it with a Shure 57, into an API mic pre.
Thanks, that’ll do it. Cheers from the UK. 👍
Ordered!
@Rich Bischoff Hey, have you compared the mkii 100 vs 50?, is it worth the extra?
I haven't, sorry.
@@RichBischoff how do you setup(mics settings) for gigs?
I'm buying Amp What is the best. Boss katana mk2 50 or Orange 35rt?
They are both great amps! You might get a little bit thicker tone with the boss because the speaker is bigger, but idk for sure.
I really need a boss katana I guess I better save my money cuz I also want the head boss headphone
Do you prefer this or your Tone Master Deluxe Reverb?
This, the tone master isn't mine, I fell like katana has better verb options, and the tone master was more of a one trick pony fender verb.
Jesus the shit on that desk.. Just smash everything there.. 🤣🤣 this is great.
Can you use the gafc with mkii 50
No, the gafc is for Katana 100. Boss has a cheaper foot switch to choose from the 4 available patches on the 50, but individual effects must be accessed & controlled from the top of the amp. On the web I've seen ads for more expensive 3rd party switches with better ergonomics (more buttons) but same limits on controls.
does it get loud?
Yes
No
Gonna buy this one or the bigger one. I neeeeed iiit.
Метал на нём можно играть или нет?
Mr Bischoff no more hearts like to know your intake on some of the comment we know you have experience we like to know
What is your question?
Man I believe you could play if you wanted to lol
