That’s how everything goes wrong. He is both. Mr.; i.e., adult male and a member of the military.
Anyone with a gun - even more, in charge of others with guns - go from dignified to just plain full of themselves if they are nit simply brought into perspective, rejoicing with his fellow citizens.
It’s not always appropriate either.
If he’s a decent man and not an egotist, he has no need to hear it in every conversation.
Have you never noticed Presidents being addressed as Mr., not President?
Hell, our current president has a military title on some level or other.
Keeping things in perspective keeps us all sane.
