Well explained. I removed mine and cleaned it with brake cleaner and compressed air when I had the pan off but I probably didnt need to. Not really a maintenance item, just a strainer.
I understand the logic behind Subaru only having an internal filter on the CVTs. There isn't as much friction material like we see with the EATs, so changing the fluid on time should be the only service you need to perform. But there is just something about changing a filter that puts your mind at ease. 👨🔧 🤷♂️
Before I started doing all this work myself I had a mechanic tell me that this thing needed to be replaced and I didn't let him do it. Then I found the external AT filter soon after thanks to your vids.
Hey thanks for clarifying. I made the same mistake calling it a filter. Have in the past found them ‘gummed up’ and either cleaned or replaced it as I had the pan off anyway.
A knowledgeale person would know that is clearly not a filter. I miss having a 4EAT, they always did well by me and lasted a long time with regular maintenance. Thanks for the vid!
I watch most of your videos, especially come maint time. Thank you so much for educating and providing us with such useful content and how-to's! I own a 2001 Forester, and a 2002 WRX :)
I always figured if it's plugged up the strainer, it's time for a new transmission anyway. But any time I have an automatic trans vehicle, it gets a lot of fluid changes so the fluid never gets bad enough to plug anything.
You can say that a strainer "filters" out larger chucks to prevent damage making a strainer a filter. But yeah, I understand what you are saying. I don't replace those either when I do work on them.
Great video. I just did a transmission service yesterday and opted to leave the old screen in. To much plumbing to remove and I didn’t want to mess up a good transmission. I’ve had the same thoughts with GMC and Toyota too.Why am I changing a perfectly good screen. Keep up the good work!
Apparently the SVX originally shipped with an internal filter but after several clogged filter-related transaxle failures, unofficially attributed to customer maintenance neglect (especially in the American market), they opted to remove and replace it with a simple strainer to prevent the problem in the future. Interesting that they moved to an external filter on some later AT models which, judging by one of your other videos, once again causes transaxle failures from customers neglecting to change them. Follow your maintenance schedules, people!
The 4EAT and 5EAT make it real easy to change the ATF filter...external spin on filter. Whenever i service a 4EAT I will change out the external spin on filter if it's never been replaced before.
I remember trying to explain to someone one day that no, your transmission didnt fail because your screen got jammed up with junk, your transmission failed which THEN jammed up the screen.
Just ordered the black filters for the FA Forester motor. Thanks for the info. Seems like they are getting kinda scarce. I got the last ones on EBay in the US. Lots available in Australia but shipping is $$$.
I usually get a transmission fluid change every second yearly roadworthy inspection. He doesn't drop the pan, just drains out whatever is going to come out of the drain plug, and changes the spin on filter. Only issue I can see with this is that the magnet in the pan does not get cleaned.
Technically speaking a filter is a really good strainer.... while a strainer does perform a similar function as a filter, it's just s really crappy filter, but it does filter none the less. But I do agree with you that the object in question is NOT considered a filter, but it does act like one on a sense. So it is like a filter just not a filter. Good day Sir..... oh I love your videos
It's totally off topic from this channel, but I'm adding a spin on filter to my Ford E350 chassis C6 transmission since it's getting a rebuild. Stock, it had no magnet in the pan and only a screen "filter". Maybe it's overkill but for about $50, I figure it's worth it. A $4 Motorcraft oil filter will fit the filter head so it's stupidly cheap to replace the filter annually. I do my own oil changes so there won't ever be any confusion as to why there's a tiny car oil filter under my 6.9L diesel. The transmission has lots of internal damage from age and probably the lack of filtering.
Yet official Subaru parts does call this a filter....31728AA180. I'm confused. I just changed it in my TR580 cvt. Looks similar to the "strainer" in your video but I do see what seems to be filter material in mine.
