Agree about the guns. However I've been regularly having 2 mill + potential damage games in the defence and find it to be suprisingly durable. On top of that having 6 short burst smokes to disengage at will is so nice.
Erm... worth 2 or 3 Ohios? No, not even close. Fourty stages would get you the Defence and would cost you 96k RP. The Ohio is 62k. So you're basically paying about 50% more, but you're also getting a T6 Elli, T7 Francesco Ferruccio, and 4 Big Santa Containers included in that price.
You can also pay with coal and steel too, so if you have a surplus of any, you can make it cheaper. I spent a fuck ton of coal.
I am about 4% away from the kitakami and I pretty much used 510k coal 12k steel and 110k RB..but it's all free I hate it when they say its expensive as it dont cost anything
@@teacoffee5847 do you think that defence is worth it instead napoli and shiki worth of steel and coal, + rest rb points? I can buy stee/coal ships any time, defence might or might not show up soon.
Totally worth it. Got t9 Carnot and Leipzig from those 4 big gifts. So I got very lucky but those 4 crates Plus the cruisers? A good deal!

I would compare guns more to Thunderer but without the penetration. You aren't getting this accuracy with King George V.
I ended up going for it... 150K coal + 76k RP for Defence and a couple of cruisers plus 4x Big crates seemed ok. Although I already had Ohio and Slava and was struggling on what RB ship I wanted next. I like the Defence so far, but only have played a few games in it.
I agree. At first I said hell no to KIta, but now I am considering getting it, debating on the rarity. And later the regret I'll feel for not getting it.
I had a majority of coal with RP for the last 10-15% and got them all up to Defence as well. In all the three ships we got are actually quite good for what they are. I saw a lot of Kita's when the event started but not anymore, and they never seem to have a major impact on games.
I sacrificed my 400k+ coals, 10k+ steels and 30k RB points. Best investment on this ship. I bet this ship would cost in future with steel or RB

Man I wish I had enemy BBs like this in my Defense. So far 90% of my games have me getting raped by a CV because the AA is terrible or getting bumrushed by German BBs. Who dodge the torps using hydro and then just nuke you for whatever the CV left.
Next week you won't like it.
HMS Defence is named after the pre WW1 Unarmoured Cruiser that was destroyed at the Battle of Jutland after being bracketed by two German Dreadnought shells. She was never intended to be in the firing line for a Main Fleet battle, but her Flag Officer was apparently an idiot and insisted on steaming his ships up and down between the opposing fleets instead of withdrawing to provide the option of rescue for the crews of the big ships should they be fatally damaged. Stupid choices cost lives. A cousin of mine was the Engineering Officer aboard that Defence and sadly was killed with the ship.

Potato, your logic doesn't work when it comes to what to prioritize. The defence is currently a one time availability item (yes they can bring it back later for another resource, but we dont know).
So it makes sense to max out the FOMO and get the ship now. You can always get OHIO later. Can always get the Steel ships later. This and the Kitakami are only available once, afawk.
Honesty the skill floor is high on this ship, you cannot just sail around openly but my god is the DPM there. The problem right now is that people in randoms will all shoot me as priority target because [new ship threat gets everyones attention]. You have to play this like a lightcruiser around islands & use smoke to turn out and torps when ppl push in.. the best part is that it’s not so squishy as to pop like a light cruiser, I get penned a lot but the high HP buffer is excellent. Just don’t open water at all, play it like a high dpm Goliath with smoke
Ohio, Vampire, Slava, Illinois FIRST, maybe Druid, too, if your a DD main. But, this ship is strong.
Ehhh, I’d say only Ohio and Vampire are musts. Slava is meh unless you play against bots. But they’re also none of those ships are going anywhere, this is the only chance to get Defence for a while.
I used to play this game for the historic ships. Some of the almost builts were also interesting but then it all became fantasy. This ships is totally fictional - BUT - similiar ships were planned by several navies after the Germany Panzer Schiffs were launched. However, the only such ships completed were the French Dunkerque and Strassbourg. If the UK, Japan and the US had not signed the 1932 London treaty which extended the building holiday for 5 more years to1937 there may have been several more Cruiser-Killers. This is an interesting ship and the only real problem I have with it is the 16 sec reload for its 14" guns! The KGV launched in 1940 has 14" guns with a reload of 28 sec! CRAZY!
The concept of having good guns balanced by some armor etc. deficiencies. Kind of a fan of that.

Your videos on this ship have made me want to obtain it soooo badly. I just need to grind a bit more coal or RP, because I can buy up to 38% of the 40 needed to get the Defence
The fact that many battleships at this tier come with a health pool equivalent to the Rock of Gibraltar adds to the challenge.
Hey PQ I am from the future, in a year cvs are really balanced and noone complains about them anymore. Subs have been nerfed and will now die if they get hit by 3 depth charges, they will also not be able to go above 20 knots

I had my best games when I ditch camo upgrade and go for steering gear upgrade in slot 5. so much better maneuverability. And with the daring smoke, camo is not that necessary
I personally thing this ship is balanced, a rarity this day unlike some other ships we get nowadays. The guns are amazing, secondaries can be useful, you get torps and you get smoke; but on the other hand it has weak armor (but not cripplingly bad, i've been able to bounce some big shells) so you need to be careful. Also something people i think don't think much about, but Defense has a small profile, is a small ship, and that can make it easier to evade shells especially at long range
You say it’s not overpowered and yet you name 4 pros for the ship and only 1 con… No way this ship ISNT overpowered, people just haven’t properly realised it yet due to the scarcity.
well, let see, turret traverse is awful, it does not have british acceleration or super heal and you can easily pen it from the front with guns of the same caliber, citadel sits atop the water and shares a similar shape to yoshino or azuma so it can easily eat penetrations and citadels.@@jpage

I decided to make a day of it if I was going to burn through all of my resources and picked up Scharnhorst '43, RN Ruggiero di Lauria, HNLMS Tromp, Slava, VP Elli, RN Francesco Ferruccio, HMS Defence and Kitakami all at the same time. Got FR25 out of the four Big Santa's Gifts too. I did have to purposely not collect Scharnhorst '43 in order to get it on the same day.
If I am not going to have a stockpile, then to hell with it, lets burn it all.

Those firing angles are spicy as heck. More ships like this, that aren't unicorns. It does a few things well, and other things very poorly.
Left a heal on the table so a few HP left begging (I'm sure the plan wasn't to be caught out so) but seems like a cool ship. I wonder if there might be better buying options down the road though?

You just have to team up with a good Offence. Which is bound to have a good defense.
How is the Marseille not better than this ship in every way?

Napoli 100% Napoli is a must have in my book. And the Defence is a nice to have.
I wish WG gave Yoshino some attention. That ship has a lot of potential, but it eats way too much damage. Sure the fire chance is good, but the ship eeds improvement.
Why is that relevant to this conversation? Wargaming never adjusts core armor layouts after they’re released, the only ships that WG may adjust are totally broken & overpowered or something that was missed like asw bug or something. When you say “this ship needs improvement” it sounds like you just want your favorite ship to be OP when it clearly isn’t.. WG doesn’t do “let’s see what this ships weakness is, wow let’s plug that hole” for no reason whatsoever..
Yoshino is good where it is. Long range HE spammer, solid AP when you have the opportunity and torps that surprise the reds. Just stay back. ofc hard to influence the game except through dmg farming.

For new players, absolutely not. She is a super high skill floor because as he states, you are something the size of a BB but you have no armor and a massive citadel.
I bought this ship using mainly coal and premium time. Only player it once so far, but seems like a nice ship from what I've seen.
I had to spend 330k coal, 10k steel, and 36k RB points to get this ship but i think it was absolutely worth it. One of my favorite ships now. And the sub 15 sec reload on those size guns plus the cruiser dispersion is insane. Then you add the fast reloading torps?
