      @gabrielrockman 3 місяці тому +2

      As a Caps fan, I don't approve. We're still worlds away from the Rangers and Canes. We're still probably behind New Jersey. Adding some 50-60 point players like Dubois and Mangiapane is an improvement to our team for sure, but we're still probably just the 4th best team in the division. I think we're more likely to finish bottom 3 in the division than we are to finish top 3 in the division.
      I'd rather commit to a rebuild than give up a 2nd round draft pick (even a Colorado 2nd round draft pick) for a 1 year rental of a 2nd line winger for a team that's borderline about whether or not they'll make the playoffs. Especially if he's getting 5.8 million for one season and isn't likely to be worth 5.8 million. I don't think that Mangiapane has much chance of performing well enough to get us back anything more than a late 2nd round pick in return in the not unlikely event that the Capitals are out of the playoff hunt at the trade deadline.

    • @gabrielrockman
      @gabrielrockman 3 місяці тому

      @@mannyoliveira776 Because they're still nowhere as good as the Rangers or Canes and still very likely to finish behind the Devils. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Flyers or Islanders finished ahead of them. Why give up a second round pick for an expensive one year rental when you're probably not even going to make the playoffs, and if you do sneak in, you have almost no chance of getting through the first round.

      Spencer Carbery got the best he could out of a team that seriously lacked offense for most of the season. The Caps just need the young guys they already have to step it up this season. McMichael is a RFA. Which McMichael are they going to pay for? The one that gives them about 0.3 points per game over his career so far, or the one who shown during the second half of last season he can be a 20-30 goal producer? Lapierre and Miroshnichenko are still new to the team, and both have had to overcome health problems. Lapierre has the talent to be a 1C or 2C, and be on the top PP. The also have Ryan Leonard waiting in the wings, who they will likely sign within the next 2 years.

      But anyways, with the rest of your comment im assuming you are one of the “rebuilds are everything” crowd, rebuilds are far from being a 100% successful process, once you go in that direction your team might be stuck in it for decades.
      You have to run it back when you got a Star of Ovechkin, Crosby or Datsyuk caliber in your line up, and thinking it’s for them individually is a mistake, these kind of players have become indistinguishable from your franchise through the years, this second that they slow down, it isnt worth it anymore mentality is very NHL whatever year EA sports game like.
      What reason do Washington fans have to show up without Ovechkin doing Ovechkin things, without a shot at the playoff and a team showing they are trying to make it ? None … and don’t forget this whole show is profit driven.
      In a rebuild scenario, it’s sell everything not young and cheap, be stuck with contracts that look rough now out of the context they were signed in. Hope every season you finish among the lasts (with empty seats) to hopefully have a good position in a shitty lottery with no guarantees of getting the talent you need … if you struck gold congrats maybe you might be out of it in less than 10 years … if not your CBJ or Buffalo, good luck with that.

    Something that I feel like is getting missed with the Guentzel talks is that Carolina can give him 8 years whereas everywhere else can only do 7 years. We have to remember that even if the Canes only pay him something like 7.75 million per year for 8 years, that would be the equivalent of him making 8.8 million per year on a 7 year deal somewhere else. So Carolina might seem like they are lowballing if they offer him under 8 million, but if they are offering him the full 8 year term it kind of evens out. Hopefully they can get him locked up.

    I think there might be some sticker shock with Guentzel, but I’m far from convinced high 9s-low 10s is an overpay in today’s market and with the rising cap, considering his 94 point, 34 goal pace.
    If it starts to approach Nylander/Pettersson/Pastranak money I become skeptical.

    Honestly, I feel like this is a good trade for both teams. I think Mangiapane needed a change of scenery, and he has room and potential to grow as a Capital.
    And at the same time, I think Calgary brought in enough goal scoring talent last year, plus they have some good goal scoring talent ready to move up from the AHL, that I don't think Mangiapane's goal scoring capabilities will be missed too much. The first year might see some growing pains, but I think within two years Calgary should see those goals back.

  • @billdapp2491

    Another master class move by Conroy. Mangiapane is not the 35 goal scorer he was two years ago. Well over paid at $5.8 million! At best he's a 15 - 20 goal scorer so costing too much.

    • @gabrielrockman
      @gabrielrockman 3 місяці тому

      @@butcherpete2286 Mangiapane is a good fit and he makes the Capitals slightly better. But a guy whose career high is 55 points, whose second best season is 43 points, and who has scored just 43 points and 40 points the last two seasons, but is getting paid 5.8 million this season shouldn't cost a 2nd round pick.
      And a team which is still probably not even good enough to return to the playoffs next season shouldn't be making trades like this.

    • @jonathanchampion9638
      @jonathanchampion9638 3 місяці тому

      @@gabrielrockman A team that isn't good enough to return to the playoffs shouldn't be trading for scoring depth on expiring contracts, that they can flip at the next trade deadline with salary retained, likely for more than they just spent to acquire it? That sounds like EXACTLY the kind of thing a team that may not make the playoffs should do.

    As a Hurricanes fan, I'm worried what the Guentzel deal will mean for us retaining other players and what it would mean for us long term, because he's not going to be worth it the full 8 years like some alternatives (Necas) for that deal would. And Guentzel alone doesn't replace the players we'd lose to make that work

    We can't pay big Z $5mil for being a number 4-6th dman. The problem is that you can't play him too high up for too long because then he's prone to making mental mistakes. I think $4.5-4.75mil times four years is decent for big Z. Maybe someone will randomly pay him $5-6mil/season on July 1st...

    That's why I can't get invested into the NHL so much - not even 2 or 3 years gone and all of your favourite players from a team are already scattered all around the continent. There's so much movement going on you've got no chance to grow attached to a team the same way as in, say football (vel 'soccer'). At least if you don't have a club in your area :)

    How many wingers in the league would you put ahead of him? Three or four? How many of them are free agents on Monday?
