- Version 2.0 of my experimental chicken train system. A system that is essentially a bunch of chicken tractors laid end to end. The system is lightweight and highly portable, making it easy to mix vegetable growing with laying hens.

love seeing your kids run around in the garden, I want that for my 10month old. I got some time to learn and setup. Thanks for sharing.
I love your chicken train ! Thank you for sharing your invention!!
This is awesome. We have this same setup for our raised beds to protect them from rabbits and squirrels. I'll have to make use of them for the chickens too! Thanks!
Scalable and easy system, thanks for sharing
New sub from ART and BRI, I love this it looks light, easy for older female to move. Thank you.
What a great idea! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this idea - a moveable run light enough for me to move around in a confined area :)
Wow! You have a LOT packed in that 1/3 of an acre!! ❣️😳I applaud you. What an inspiration . We all need to be growing 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱.
Great idea! This is really cool! Great job! I just got chickens and looking for ideas. Brilliant and thank you!
Sounds like a good system, thanks for sharing that. :)
That is pure brilliance amazing a much better system
If you use metals check out the 80/20 framing system(kinda expensive though). Great idea, chickens are excellent at eatting bugs.
Excellent presentation!
You could also use these to cover cabbage or other plants from bugs but putting a cloth over the top and sides of these modules. My garden is 48” wide, but I think with the pvc, it would still be light weight enough to handle easily. Thanks for the idea !
"Be nice, be thankful, do the work" Yes!
I've made some small shade houses out of heavy wire mesh and shade cloth for my guinea pigs that free range my lawn at times. I like this approach of using them end-on-end in a modular system. Mine have handles in the peaks of the houses to move them easily.
Thanks for Info. Good improvisation.
Cheers ;)
Ingenious Dahlin's:) Imagination Inspires. THANKS ! Have to try that out... Blessings to you and yours. :)
Very nice. Love the solution! Thanks
You did a great job..
great idea diego
Great idea man and I love the way you have evolved it. Seems really easy to incorporate into market gardens and urban settings. I love your podcast I'm glad you're getting into the UA-cam scene also. Never stop doing this man you're killing it!
Thanks!
Really like the idea!
Very good. Loved it
Too awesome!
This is the first video I watch from your channel, just wanted to let you know, your short, precise episode with a "watch next episode for more" , and great outro, your line is great " Be nice, Be Thankful, and Do The Work" that should go on a tshirt.... anyway, my first video from your channel and because of the things i mentioned before especially the outro, you got a subscription and like and comment from me and now gonna check out another video or two definitely.
Build each chicken train slightly bigger to make them stackable for transportation and storage. Thank you for you’re contact sir
Good idea.
Nice idea Sir
Your "chicken train" idea is pretty clever, Diego. Those PVC+chicken wire runs look easy to move and store, and as long as the chickens stay happy it makes a nice barrier. If your 3.0 make does have a metal frame, that should be a safer bet for keeping predators out.
They are for sure easy. My only predator pressure here during daylight hours are hawks so I am good there. At night they are in the coop. Next version will be metal. Likely out of EMT or I will weld something up.
Nice set up. Liked and subscribed.
We're in the process of making some of these chicken tractors
What a smart idea!
This is a very doable chicken run and I can tell a lot of thought went into it. The problem I had when I lived in town was dogs. They were my biggest chicken predators. If a dog can get in it thy will wipe out your whole flock like they did mine.
You have a good idea!tnk u for sharing us.😁😁😁
Nice dude.
Curt!
Thanks man.
Diego!

Nice video. Thx for sharing. I made a larger mobile run and it's a bit heavy. Been looking for other options and approaches.
This is so awesome 👌
I have an enclosed repurposed bird cage made into a tractor ...i move it as they are in it when I see they're getting bored. The new area makes em happy again and the dragging makes the area look raked.
I have chickens for my garden and pets only
Great idea! Pest control the natural way.
I like it!
Intriguing!
Brilliant idea for mobile chicken runs. Metal versions will be much heavier. I think the plastic frames would be easier for me to move and rust resistant.
Great stuff you are chicken hero :D
Great idea
Art & Bri sent Me. Good info, Thanks
Thank you!
Very nice I like it 🇵🇸❤️🐓🕊
Respect and love from Palestine 🇵🇸
Love it.
I didn't know Johnny Depp had a doppelganger that gardens
free tip, build a caterpillar style tunnel instead, flexible, feel free to patent it as well.
Awesome!
Thank you, I wish I were young enough to do that
Very cool
i love this idea :o you could have one sections as sleeping quarters
There already is a main coop.
Great 👍
i really like this idea, and would like to try it myself. but i feel that metal versions would be unnecessarily strong, i don't know what type of predator you have to deal with, but here in the UK the biggest thing we have is the fox, which just adding another upright and maybe another top tube would make it plenty strong enough.
metal frames will rot out where they are in continual contact with soil, where as i have found that pvc will last.
i really like the idea of making them smaller at the top so as to make them stackable.
i don't know how will it would work but you could use the clips for fixing the pipe to walls/ect to make a clip on end or make double ended clips for fixing two "train carriages" together.
the tunnel that connects the permanent run to the chicken train, do you find that it gets in the way with other duties, for me the wheelbarrow is my best friend, and if this was me i would be tempted to build some wheelbarrow friendly bridge over it, or is it just not problem?
i will be interested to see how this develops.
Thanks Pete. Metal would just outlast PVC here. Predator protection isn't a factor because they aren't in there at night when the coyotes are out. Stackable would be great.
Brilliant
This is genius!
If considering moving to an EMT metal upgraded version, how about building a bending jig for hoops instead of box style? You could cut substantial weight, and cut cost on materials and fittings. Food for thought. Brilliant concept you're working with here.
You can bend plastic too with a heat gun.
Half inch pvc bends easily
@@mannersmatter6773 do you think half inch pvc pipes for a hoop chicken train would be sturdy enough and not wobble?
I love this idea!! Do u think there is any way to modify it so it would fold under for easy storage? Would love something like this but I live in the suburbs where space is limited.
Appriciate
Love this...already using a chix tractor but this would make moving around garden beds so much easier. One question, what do you do to provide water inside the train. I have a galvanized auto-waterer but they always perch on it and pollute it if they have room! I keep it up on blocks in the tractor but it's not so handy to move.
No water is in the train. The food and water is located in the permanent main run off the coop. And for water I use a 5 gallon bucket with nipples on it.
Diego, we're working on a draft proposal for producing food underneath the PV panels in a ten acre solar farm. This version 2.0 chicken train design will have them made in the shade. People get ready, there's a train a-coming.
Great idea. What are you growing in the beds the chickens walk through please?
Do you worry about predators being able to flip them over and get to the chickens? I know nothing about chickens, but I am trying to learn. I am thinking about getting 3 chickens next year and trying to figure it all out.
Welcome to new channel “COZY FARM “ THANK YOU 😊 👍✊👍
I have that same clip on my wire fencing :P
I am thinking that instead of chicken tunnels to get them to the train cars is making one with lawn mower wheels and handles on the other end put that just out side the night roost bribe the chickens to go in it then lift the handles a Lil bit and move shuffle the hens to the train cars call it the chicken bus "come on girls get in the bus "
Cool video and idea. I am curious why you are using the chickens? Are you using them to till the bed after harvest? Having them debug and manure existing beds? A combination of the two?
No. I just had the space and had the chickens, so this was a way of giving the chickens a place to graze while building soil for future use in the process. It could be used for either of those things that you suggested though.
This is a really good idea. Chickens need to roam. They need bugs. They love to be outside.
Tnx
Seems like predators would be able to get into those chickens fairly easy since each of the sections are not connected
nice nice carry on
diego, do you ever have issues w the chickens burrowing under the pvc and escaping? I'm trying this in a deep mulch garden, and the mulch is too easy for them to move.
Yes, but it is very rare. I will see some holes form and just block those with a board or piece of fence.
Very nice. Are the talents of the birds to peck at insects amongst the vegetables? Would they not eat the market produce and therefore be counterproductive? Looks really cool!
Chickens are known to leave a trail of destruction. They're excellent though for preparing your soil for new planting.
Am curious to know more about why you do this. My chickens got into my small garden when things were growing one year and just destroyed everything
the poop its good for the soil which helps the plants
@@lukefrench464 yes I understand that but my chickens just ate everything when they got in my garden. No amount of poop could help that
how has this system worked over the years? Are you still using it? Is it worth the trouble have making and placing?
Good
What plants are chickens compatible with in this system? I wouldn't think my salad mix would do well under chicken traffic! Squash maybe? Nightshade family? Root crops maybe??
I use a cover crop. The goal is to use the chickens to clear out the crop, so you would harvest whatever you could first and let the chickens have the rest if using with veg.
how is the train? and by chance did you ever experiment with bird netting to see if it did just a good a job (and lower price)?
Yay chickens
My guyyyyy
I like this method, but I don't understand what's the advantages of that and why move it to another place everyday? Please tell me
I don't move it every day. I move it once a week.
How do you get the chickens back in when you move the tractors and how do you keep them dry when it rains? Snow? Water and feed in there? Also a dog or raccoon would be able to get in. are they laying eggs yet? where?
The Chicken Centipede
Great vid and build. One question Why Metal?
Pvc seems to be working fine?
UV and look. That's it.
@@DiegoFooter You can get UV resistant PVC conduit (used for electrical wire) instead of plumbing PVC.
Guzel olmus kardes
Genius! What are the garden plants where you have the run. I don't have much space and I'm going to have to sacrifice part of my garden for them.
Cover crop.
@@DiegoFooter thanks. I actually planted rye grass as my cover crop last fall. This helps.
Instead of just saying cover crop, it helps serious newbies to be a bit more specific. But I will research “cover crop.” Im learning a lot from the commenters as well as this channel. For newcomers like myself that are scanning downward for only your reply, Diego, take time to be more specific when asked a specific. I subscribed and I’m doing my due diligence to read before asking you what everyone else has asked you.
Warm regards from Andrew WLT channel
You obviously don’t have carpet snakes 🐍 like we do in Australia 🙂
I'm looking for opinions. I am going to have two yards. One year I will have my chickens in yard one and grow in yard two and the next year switch. I want the chickens to spend time in the non growing yard amending the soil. Should I also incorporate a chicken moat around both gardens? Is the benefit of the insect removal of a chicken moat worth the loss of time my chickens will spend in my unplanted garden amending the soil. Any opinions or ideas are appreciated
I would just put them in one area first, then rotate them out the next year. I wouldn't worry about trying to incorporate them into all areas at once. I would also split it up into three areas versus two. Chickens, Rest (fallow, tarped, cover crop), Grow. I would want some time in there for the manure to fully break down before I put stuff I was going to eat into it unless you are growing crops that are well above the ground like tomatoes.
Years ago Mother Earth News magazine had an article about having a fenced area on each side of a four sided chicken coupe. Chickens were rotated into one fenced area each year to clean up a garden that had been there the year before. The garden was always one year ahead of the chickens in rotation around the coupe.
Great idea! What is the O.D diameter of the PVC tubing. Thanks
Thanks! 3/4"
Choo choo on the chicken train!
P.S. The auto focus has got to get turned off please it creates this retro-psychedelic-phasing effect on larger screens where it looks like everything behind you out of focus is moving and fuzzed.
Thanks for the heads up, I can fix that. Learning how to work the camera still. Can you give me a timestamp of where this is really obvious so I can see what I am dealing with?
No problem Diego just looking out. If you actually watch right at the beginning of each shot you'll see the camera focus on your body and everything else around it becomes out of focus. If you watch the videos on a TV monitor the effect will be much more apparent. It's seen in the beginning of this video pretty clearly to me👍
Sir, I'm sure this hens are on their laying stage, so how do they lay their eggs in there ?
They are. They make their way back to the main coop to lay the eggs.
Nice man, think that could translate well to a Curtis style market garden?
+Trevor Mann Thanks. That's the long term plan. Functionally I think yes, but there are some issues with space meaning you would need to keep some beds out of production and manure around crops. Really long beds or a lot of beds would pose challenges. But overall if someone wanted to manage it I don't see big constraints.
Trevor Mann make the train the width of a bed
Maybe when you crop out a bed - apply the same thinking as cows in a Salatin model farm. One day or two day blitz to clean up crop residue on a bed. Maybe in winter rotate chickens with cover crops to build biomass quick.
Exactly. I will try to do some experiments with that later this summer.
Do you need additional feed when they feed on the cover crops in the train?
Yes, always.
Kitchen scraps or do you buy food? Reason I am asking is because there's a farmer who creates compost piles (for sale) and does not buy any additional feed. they turn the piles at certain stages and eat the bugs and scraps available. What is your feed cost/ bill if you have one and don't mind answering?
He gives the amount of food that is added to the piles every week per chicken .. restaurant scraps mostly. Trying to do a cost comparsion given the effort/cost to collect versus feed bags delivered.
Wouldn't they destroy your plants by eating or tearing away at them? How long do you leave them on a section at a time? I thought chicken manure was too hot for a garden?
Very innovative idea! Where do they go at night?
Back to the coop.
wait so do you have them on the bed to till the soil? they don't eat your garden?
They only go on beds that aren't in production.
I make the coop for hens then I will share how grow and how to keep hens better in the winter and summer something Is necessary before keep the hens.
How long do you keep your chickens on the run? How many chickens in the run?
Depends on time of year. Around 2 weeks. 14 chickens. That's probably too many and too long, but given the space I have it's what I do.
