- How do you find dinosaurs and other fossils?
Join PhD student Jeremy Lockwood for an ASMR fossil hunting adventure.
The Isle of Wight is one of the best places in the UK to find fossils as they constantly erode out of the island's cliffs. Put your headphones on, sit back and listen as Jeremy takes us to Compton Bay to search for signs of prehistoric life.

I found a fossilised horse's tooth on the island the other day. Wasn't looking, just sat on the shore. Lovely video.
Amazing! What a great find 🐎
Very calming. Thank you.
That was a nice video! I love the whole series. I have a question, I am from the Netherlands and I would like to look for fossils on your beautiful island. Is it legal to bring them home with me?
It is legal to pick up small numbers of fossils from the beach. It is illegal to chip away at a cliff without permission of the landowner, which is often the National Trust, so it would be a good idea to contact them in advance and tell them where you're planning to hunt for fossils.
Thanks, we're so glad you're enjoying the series! It can vary from beach to beach so may be worth checking but as a general rule the previous reply is quite correct, any fossils found in a cliff belong to the landowner of the land at the top of the cliff and in most cases you will be fine to take small fossils from the beach itself. We have an article here that may help: www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-find-fossils-on-the-beach.html
And if you haven't checked them out just yet, our previous videos have some info about fossil hunting on the Isle of Wight that may be of use to you too:

Lovely and soothing!
Wow!
PhD student 😂 like the classic stereotype of the student who never leaves academia, still studying and teaching late into life
Wow nice
Thanks 😀
Very nice video ❤🎉
Very interesting m thank you ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm assuming, as the intention remains unexplained, the acronym ASMR refers to 'autonomous sensory meridian response'. I wonder why the Natural History Museum is bothered with creating, specifically, ASMR content rather than just plain natural history content? I find this video unpleasantly pretentious.
