Thank you sooooo much! I've been given a kit with no instructions and have looked through dozens of vlogs and finally found yours! Sooo helpful! Can't wait to get started now I know what to do!
Highly recommended. Urban Farm-It were extremely helpful once I purchased the kit and seeds. Growing the shrooms was nice and easy, but Wow what a taste!!! They tasted great.
Simple when you see how, i was expecting to maybe see some handheld iPhone filming with dodgy sound as i searched on Utube. This is brilliant and i am fully engaged now. Can't wait to see results.... off to wash my hands so they can get muddy :)
Great video! 2 questions: Does sticking your whole forearm in to mix not risk introducing contam in to your grow? Would you recommend more growing with the bag horizontal or vertical? I notice in the video it’s stored horizontally. Thank you 🙏🏻
HI Jack, it is true that it presents a risk of contamination. But that is minimized by good hygiene and aseptic technique when doing the mixing. Also, given that it is oyster, they are usually far dominant on the straw. that is completely up to you! I normally do it verticle if i want a naturally shaped mushroom. However, horizontal often results in a more even spread of mushrooms across the bag. Good luck and enjoy! Kr Elliot
Hi Memphis, the best time is just as the caps turn from concave to flat. if you see spores on the bag get them harvested. if you leave it longer they wont grow anymore and may start to go tough!
How long does it usually take for signs of mushroom growth? I opened up the box to make the 'green house' conditions about 2 weeks ago and I'm not seeing anything yet, is this normal?
HI Emma, that depends on the variety and how well developed the mycelium is. For example, if you are growing pink oyster currently it could be too cold. Or for blue oyster the correct temperatures but if there isn't much mycelium then it wont pop! all things being perfect, it could still take longer than this so I wouldn't worry. try moving the kit to a new location to provide different conditions.
Hi, I'm now on my 3rd week of the incubation stage. I have good mycelium growth in the middle holes but not the top or bottom. Shall I leave it for another week or start the fruiting stage?
Hi Matthew, is there a lot of moisture built up at the ends? any other difference of note that you think may cause it? i would make sure that it isn't waterlogged in those areas and then leave to incubate longer. The better developed the mycelium the better the harvest!
@@urbanfarm-it Hello, I left it for another week (I moved it to a warmer room) but still no growth on top/bottom. It seems quite saturated at both ends/may still be a bit cold which I think might be stunting growth. Shall I try and dry the substrate out in those wetter areas or leave it a bit longer?
@@matthewdavies2041 dfinitely sounds like too much moisture at the ends and temperature, if you can warm it up and gently allow the substrate to dry up a bit at the ends it should recolonise the area
@@urbanfarm-it Thankyou :) also mine is in the stage before fruiting, however I missed the day that I was supposed to check whether it’s white or not yet - and I’m not home for a few more days! Will this timing have ruined it?
@@JM-pd8bk no not at all. you are better going over than under. the more mycelium development the better the final harvest. if you leave it for far to long it may fruit in the bag, but in this situation you can just pull off the premature mushrooms and await your next flush.
@@urbanfarm-it I’ve waited many weeks now but mine still doesn’t look like it’s ready for fruiting - there is the start of white spider web like growth but it’s not thick or cotton like in this video, it’s more opaque - I’m worried I didn’t mix things vigorously enough to begin with. Any advice?
@@JM-pd8bk Hi! if there is some growth, but it doesn't smell bad or have green mould I wouldn't worry. You are spot on that inconsistent mixing could slow down the process as it takes longer for the mycelium to knit together and form properly. I would say just hold fast and wait a little longer. I’m now end of week 3 of developing the mycelium, they moved house with me, I think they were slower as my old flat was quite cold. Is there a time limit on developing this stage? It’s only just getting white now Fingers crossed 🤞
Hey! there is no time limit. As you rightly say, the coo temperatures may have slowed down the process a bit. Sounds like you are on the right track, just don't rush onto the fruiting stage :)
Omg I did it all wrong. I didn’t have spawn included in the box I bought, it was missing so I did the t all without 😂wondering why nothing grew 🫣 just used my voucher to get spawn. Can I just add it after 22 days? I did everything but add the spawn

Nice to see a face to the kit 👍🏻
👍🏻 Just waiting now 😉👌
Very informative video, thank you. What temperature range is suitable for the kit during incubation?
the key is consistency! but around 22 is optimum :)

Can I reuse the grow bags? Just buy new spores?
Hi my pink oyster mushrooms are well on their way now but how do I know when to harvest them? Is there an optimum time?

Do you have a bit on the Fruiting part?
Can these kits be used any time of the year in the uk thanks

yes they can!
Whats the optimal hunidity??

Are those magic mushrooms? If not what do you do with them when they've grown?
HI Raff! they are fully gourmet mushrooms, lovely to eat and packed with nutrients
@@urbanfarm-it hi, thanks for the reply, that is great I didn't know you could grow mushroom to eat like that. Very informative.
Is it supposed to smell?
Hi JAyden,
the smell should be natural and mushroomy. if it smells like rot then you probably have a contamination issue!
Do you have to put the spawn in exactly 8 hours after pasteurisation? Or can I leave it overnight whilst I sleep and do it in the morning?
No! it ust has to be enough time to cool. overnight is absolutely fine :)

Hi Anna, unfortunately, I think you will probably have contaminants living in the straw by now as you have been incubating for quite some time!
