Oyster shells are a bit more efficient for calcium than grit, for anyone wondering if it's enough. Absolutely add grit, but I suggest oyster shells as well :)

Thanks Becky. We've had great success with the black Lorpes too with production and temperament. We don't refrigerate our eggs, and comparing a free ranger's egg to the eggs you get from the grocery store is like comparing wet cardboard to a chocolate.

this video taught me so much about how I need to change my chickens house and chicken run so it makes them happier: ) I am 12 and I love owning chickens, it makes me happier and gives me something to do. I used to have sooooo much spare time and I couldn't find anything to do with it so I got some chickens and it took up all of my spare time. the best part was that I enjoyed it. I love my chickens and I hope to have many more to come.

You tutorial videos are excellent. And I know you are trying to keep things fresh every time you make a video. But really, I am satisfied with just watching you interact and talk to your funny farm animals. 😆
The time I found out your guinea bird and dog slept together in the dog house, and walked out together, I laughed for days.
I enjoyed the morning commotion on your front porch breakfast. Need more of those updates.

Thanks for the tips, I look forward to starting a coop next year! In all the research I've done, black australorp and americauna are 2 chickens I have decided I want, along with buff orpington. I may also raise ducks, probably Indian runners or silver apple yard, or white pekin. I think they're entertaining, also provide eggs, and possibly meat.

There is absolutely no calcium in grit. Grit is insoluable stone, usually granite, and is necessary solely so they can grind up their food in their gizzards. Calcium comes from fortified layer feed, oyster shell and their own egg shells (cleaned, dried and ground before being fed back to them).

Becky I have a couple questions - at what age is it time to cull roosters that have to go? And how did you emotionally prepare yourself before hand/cope? I ordered some ducklings and received several rooster chicks with them, and well... I thought I'll just raise them for meat because from what I understand I can't keep that many roosters considering I will only have 4 or 5 hens to start with. I've never put down an animal and I'm trying to learn as much as possible before its time. Love your channel, you inspire me so much and I've learned quite a bit from you're content!

I'd get a breed that does eggs and meat, too. Make mine a Rhode Island Red. No exotic new breed for me. Forgot to say, I grew up on a farm when there was no electricity, no running water, no natural gas, and no tractors. We must have been survivalists. Because we did. In addition to the "Reds" we had White Leghorns... Each to his own I suppose.

It gets to -30 in the winter so I feed my chickens cooked warm oatmeal and in the summer I will bake a potato and they like it so well that when they are out in the yard you can call treat, treat and they come running into the chicken run attached to the coop for their "treat". This way I can get them back to the coop where I can lock them up for safety when I need to leave the yard. The 6 ladies lay 5 eggs a day, every day, and when they are out free they come back to the coop to lay the eggs. They are so curious, I was in the kitchen and they walked up 12 steps and were looking in the screen door, just watching.....

We have 4, year old layers. Three ISA Browns and an Orpington. All the way through Winter, until mid-February, we were getting about 3 eggs each day. The Orpington went broody for the first time and production dropped to just one egg. After the broody hen snapped out of it, we then got 2 eggs each day. Our Orpington is broody AGAIN and we are back down to just ONE egg every day. These girls have a very nice, spacious coop, and are free range birds during the day. Lots of food, water and treats from us. Why on earth are they not producing anymore? I am totally confused.

If they lay only one egg a day, how do they accumulate that way? are there multiple eggs in various stages of growth inside the hen at all times and do you wait for the end of the week to collect 5 or 6 eggs? thanks1

One of the hens which I have named Jackie refuses to sleep with the other hens and I have also prepared a separate nesting area for her. Quite recently a hen from next door have ventured into our yard and has laid in Jackie's nesting box. I have a question. You might not know the answer, but you have a lot of chickens, I don't know If you had/have any bantam.
My question: how many eggs would a bantam chicken lay a week? And I also have a really important question!! My chicken fell off of the ladder, and sprained her ankle. I need you! Is there anyway to help, or do we just wait? And is it to much pressure on her other leg if she hops on it to get around?? How long would it take to heal?? If your reading, I need your help, thank you.

    • @lucyelizarraras9437
      @lucyelizarraras9437 7 років тому +1

Pegasus Parties okey... for your first question: I've noticed that bantams lay less often than layers (obviously) idk why, but they usually lay about 1-3 eggs a week. That varies though. For your second question. I would keep the chicken inside or in a covered place. Isolate her from the flock. Then give her lots of vitamins, minerals, and supplements. I don't think there's much you can do with the leg though. Just give her lots of attention, give her some supplements maybe if you have them. And just make her feel comfortable and let her heal and get stronger before letting her go out with the flock. It should heal soon. Hope this helped and I hope the chicken feels better!

Hallo, Becky, I have twee bantams. They don't like eating hay, and they are really picky when it comes to table scaps. They seem to like things that are sweet like strawbarries, watermellons and carrots and dislike brocolli and those dry snack worms you can get in the store. They are crazy about rice and fresh grass! I find it really funny caz before i had them i always thought chickens eat everything. Maybe it has to do with the breed? Do your chickens always eat everything you give them or they are sometimes as picky as those from me?

Honestly. I would’ve died not knowing there were different breeds of chickens. I can’t wait to flex this knowledge

Georgia Marcum I haven't had an araucana, but all I know is that araucanas have a tuff of feathers on the side of their cheeks lol 😂 I guess that is one of the differences 😂
