This was a surprise show at a Blockbuster Music in Memphis, TN..
That night Dave Matthews Band performed at the New Daisy on Beale.
Dave makes an interesting comment about the 1992/1993 DMB rarity "Spotlight" when a few fans request it after the first song. "Spotlight" hadn't (and hasn't) been played since October of 1993.
November 2017 Upgrade sourced from the Master Hi8 tape. A VHS to DVD version circulated in 2007. That fan DVD was the source of the previous UA-cam version.
Filmed by Matt Savard - (see first comment for an email he sent with his account of the day's events). Thanks to Matt for loaning me his Hi8 master for this upgrade.
This music store, located at Poplar and Highland, is currently home to "Spin Street Music" but it was announced in November 2017 that they will be closing after the new year. (wreg.com/2017/11/07/spin-stree...)
DMB drummer Carter Beauford is in the audience and can be seen briefly a couple of times.

About a year ago, the guy who filmed this found a previous version I had posted to UA-cam using a VHS>DVD source. He was surprised it had gotten out since he never made a copy. Here are some really cool notes about this video and the show later that night from a correspondence we had last year:
----
Hey Jay!
I am Jeremy's brother, Matt, who shot the Dave Blockbuster show on my folks' old Super8 Camcorder. Jeremy didn't know if you'd respond to a once-removed request so he had mentioned shooting it. Thanks for breathing a little life into the old recording with your edit.
A few notes on that day/evening:
On the Blockbuster show: It was a great little show for sure. I was the one requesting "I'll back you up" For my GF who was the brunette sitting in front of me. We all got to hang with Dave a bit after and let him know I'd be taping (audio) the Daisy show that night and he called over his manager and told him to remember me in case we had any trouble, and said I could patch into the sound board. They were all very cool to deal with and Dave requested a copy of the video. Told him I'd bring him one and after chatting a bit we took off to head home and dupe the Super8 onto VHS.
Only 3 copies of this Super8 were ever made, each one from the master. One for me, one for my buddy Chris (yellow hat in video), and one for Dave. Since then the master has not been played. I was intrigued to find the video had leaked. Chris said he never leaked it so it seems Dave did, which is cool.
That night at the daisy I ran into some trouble getting into the venue with my sound gear (the old owner was a jackass). I eventually left my gear with Chris and went and got his manager who came to the front and laid into the owner at the door "I know you're going to let these fucking kids in with their gear, and you're going to let them plug into your board"... I recall him being pretty damn intense. Not sure if this was an ongoing issue with the venue or what.
SO we got in, and he walked me down to the board with the owner following. I got set up (just crappy metal cassette tape) and let the Board guy patch me in with the owner hawking me. I set levels at the start of the show (didn't have headphones) and left my gear with the board and went down to enjoy the show...
I sadly don't recall the setlist, but I recall him playing a solid 90 min set. I went back to flip/change tapes periodically. At midnight curfew he told the kids they had to leave during this set break, then they were coming back out. They did, and played what seemed like another 90 min set. It was a pretty epic show.
After unplugging my gear I excitedly threw the tape in my car and gave it a listen..... clipping. Lots and lots of clipping. Not sure if the owner told him to do it or what but the board feed was distorted as shit and unlistenable (I was certain my levels were set correctly). Either way, I was the only person to my knowledge taping that night, and the recording was trash.
Interesting aside, I was a bartender at Flamingos starting the year after that Dave show you sent the poster of... I had that poster/flyer on my walls all through college up at UT Knoxville. Small world.
Matt
Thank you for taking the time to write out this dissection of memory! Awesome story and context to the film.
the internet can be such a great place...
Chester Copperpot still lives on! Must be a Goonie! Love the video! Wow! Just awesome! Dave sounds great! His music is timeless!
ChesterCopperpot5 OMFG!!😱😱😵😵, this set my soul on 🔥!!! Thank you SO much Matt, and thank you Dave!! This is a treasure! Is there, by any chance, MORE??
ChesterCopperpot5 thanks this is fantastic
If Dave kept doing this, Blockbuster would never have gone out of business.
but Dave would've
Dave Matthews, playing a solo acoustic set at Blockbuster's. I don't think it gets any more '90s than this.
Austin Mistretta maybe some parachute pants for good measure
Idb Indie Dashboard same!
Kevin R. Parachute pants were an 80s thing.
Bust out the Capri suns!!!
Maybe if he had on a fanny pack and some slap bracelets
The 90s was an absolutely great time for music. Creativity was off the charts.
people really dont talk about the 90s enough but maybe enough time hasnt passed yet still
This is the holy grail of Dave footage
I’m 16 years old and i started taking guitars lessons because of Dave. He inspires me so much
That’s awesome bro, hope it’s going great! If it gets tough just remember you can do anything you put your time and effort into, keep it up!
Here I am 20 years later. Dave Matthews and James Taylor inspired me to start.
Tip for Dave, the right hand does half if not more of the work (Jack Johnson may be a good palm-mute player to learn from first)
Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Darrell Scott - all inspiring songwriter/acoustic guitar players as well.
Hey buddy, same here! I didn’t take lessons, taught myself everything! Just gotta play and feel it! I saw Dave in Omaha a few months ago. He’s still incredible. If you can go to a show!
And so the wheel turns...
You couldn't be inpsired by a better musician imo
Could you imagine? Sitting so calming in a Blockbuster, no phones, just chillin' listening to Dave? Seems UNREAL! Would love to travel back in time for that!
And apparently Carter was just chilling next to you
We had cell phones, no internet tho
No phones, but thank god for the one guy with a giant VHS camcorder!
@@aWomanFreed yea like 1 in 1500 people had one though! Most had car phones if any at all. My dad had a phone installed in his 85 Dodge Ram truck and it was expensive as hell. I still remember the mic hanging from the sun visor lol. But their were no smart phones for people to stare at.
As someone who studies a ton of music across all genres, it baffles me that more people don’t discuss his guitar playing and song writing. These songs are so unique and foreign to the average songs that get put out. Ever notice that bar bands don’t cover them a lot? His songs are hard to play on guitar.
Especially hard to play and sing
Me too!! Just listen to "the stone" my god hes difficult..uniquely ahead and on top of his skills!
Very true very difficult to play but also even harder to sing on top of, he truly is an original songwriter because he sounds like nothing before him
I am a guitarist for 40 years now and in muliti bands performing dmb songs. He is wayyyyyyy underated but then you go see the dmb in concert and see the best concert ever.
I completely agree. I always have to get ppl to see this as a cover by someone else for them to get it. The “Crash” album blew my mind. Just love
Dave is the most talented songwriter I have ever heard. He has brought so much goodness to my life, I love this man.
He didn’t write these songs. I think Stephan did.
John Martyn
It’s amazing people can’t shut the hell up for a minute and just listen
Michael DeMatteis this happened even when he played solo in Cleveland this year...
Michael DeMatteis i know right..
Drives me fucking nuts. No one respects the art anymore.
Michael DeMatteis right on.
For real. Was psyched to see this video as Im always wondering how to play some of his stuff on guitar. I can never understand why its so hard for people to just shut the fuck up and get off their phones at concerts, so rude.
Dave is such an authentic soul. At a time when every kid was listening to grunge, here comes this dude with his whimsical riffs and nasal raspy voice not giving a rat’s ass if what he was doing was what everybody wanted/expected him to do. I wonder how those folks in the audience felt about that unique style which later became his trademark. Such a legend.
This is great. I had to look it up for context. He was 27 years old and Under The Table and Dreaming came out 49 days after this was filmed. So cool!
Can’t believe he was this brilliant at such a young age. And 30 years later the songs have aged extremely well
Easy now I was born that year. I’m not 30 yet guy.
This was up the street from my job and I couldn’t leave, but I did see him at The New Daisy that night. He looks like a baby. I forgot how young he looked that night. Thanks for the memories.
I wish I could relive my life starting in 94. I never realized how good I had it back then.
best quote of the day
I think you when you die you actually get to do that.
Back when we didn’t stare at our phones incessantly
I agree. I was 14, didn't have a care and thought I had amazing things ahead. Turns out I was less than a decade away from prison where I then spent most of the next two decades. Not how I pictured life. Dave's music kept me ground to a better world.
Join the club.
Came expecting to listen to 5 minutes. Stayed. This is the Dave I grew up on. Great find.
Absolutely left no doubt after watching this...the amount of talent this man possesses was no doubt going to take him places he never dreamed of
I fucking miss the 90s. I was young too. Great times.
I was there!! @Poplar&Highland!! Somebody recorded that?!? YEAH!!!!
im in heaven , Dave is young again, and so am I when i watch this takes me back to a time of some amazing memories
Dave Matthews (Band) is like 80 % of the reason I know how to play the guitar.
Same. I can play basically every DMB song and very little else ha.
Who wouldn't be inspired
Same
Going 99% for myself
what's the other 20%?
Crazy he had all these amazing compositions in his back pocket already at this point. Dude was on his game
I'm pretty sure he already had 1 or 2 albums out at this point crazy enough.
And they're still some of the best
Not possible. Someone/something else definitely was involved.
@@aWomanFreed you think he made a deal with devil? or someone else wrote those? which is impossible if you know about his odd guitar style and chord voicings
@@kevinr.3542 you’ve obv heard him live….he’s always belching out weird sounds in between songs….he’s got NOTHING to say that’s anywhere near as deep as his song lyrics…and why is he singing about the devil, like, constantly? Whatever, I’m not trying to convince you. Keep your illusions if u wish. No way Dave is “Some Devil”….right?
Enjoy your life guys.
Travel, drink 🍷 with your friends and family, laugh and eat, make love ❤️ in the most intense way.
Go see the world 🌎 and live life because, like me, you are twenty years old listening to Dave in 99 and you blink and you’re now 37 years old.
I still have time, and what I’ve had of it though I was late, but boy have I had an AMAZING time!
So, time waits for no one - get up and go!
If you were 20 in 99 shouldn't you be 39 or 40?
Yeah sorry I was 17
I love this man thanks i needed that push
Thought I was going to do all those things ... Went to prison instead. Twenty years come and go in good times or bad.
yo this is actually an incredible recording and i thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting it.
theres only a key few songs/artists that can make me feel 14 again and the innocence of that age.
and its Dave. singing by himself some of the GREATEST songs hes ever written and from the TIME in which he wrote them.
holy cow THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That t shirt and short combo is just about the greatest 90s style there is
You are loved ❤️ My first time seeing the band play live was about a year after this. Summer 1995 when they opened for the Grateful Dead in Las Vegas
I was 20. And so proud to be listening at 48. Love you Dave. I will be with you till the end.
Honestly think he should do this same set at that last Blockbuster in Oregon.
The time
It went to quickly
Wow
I was 18 I'm now 42
Man I'd love to get those years back again
And now you're 47 😃
So am I
He’s pretty good. If he sticks with it, gets a band behind him, he could have some success. Good luck kid!
It’s nostalgic and timeless stuff such as this that makes you realize what a gem Dave’s music is for all of us.
Let's not forget these early days.... first just one step
TEFFT PATTERN sup bud. Love you miss you.
These guys are my favorite musicians of all time. The musicianship is hands down the best I have ever experienced, and to see them is an experience... A spiritual experience.
Alex Knight... These guys? You see 'these guys'? You're still stoned! 😎
Oak is probably a big Imagine Dragons fan. DMB just can't compete.
Exactly yes, just as designed when they took over for the Grateful Dead
Thank you for this video. I heard DMB for the first time when I was 17 during the summer of '94. I had just graduated HS, and was at a friend's bonfire. He played some of their music for everyone, and it was unlike anything I had heard. I was hooked. At almost 42, I'm still a fan, and watching this makes me incredibly sentimental and so happy. Thank you.
As an 80s baby, and knowing and remembering the 90s- cuz I lived it and loved it- this is the best of the 90s you can get!
COPPERPOT DOES IT AGAIN!!!!!!!
What's crazy is that I would pay $5,000 to see Dave
play at at a Blockers today!
Yeah this video is an important historical document. Not quite sure why but it captures something about this particular time and place.
What a gem of a video. Great memories.
This screams '90's...Dave Matthews & Blockbuster. Hell yeah!!
Baby Dave❤️
This is amazing in it's simplicity .
This is truly incredible to see Dave as a baby here ! Amazing..he sounds just the same. I saw him for the first time in 1995 a year after this. This is the best. Beautiful Dave.
Love you all 😂
How precious to see young Dave performing these gems flawlessly, then like now ❤
The craziest shit is this is 24 years ago
we're fucking old ...damn
it's over.
Thanks for making me feel as old as I am.
Me too. I was 14 listening to this stuff. 40 now. Hate to say it but after before these crowded streets I think it was downhill. Wish they'd go back to basics. Then again maybe I'm just old.
Robert Rob 😣😣😣😣
This is priceless. I was a freshman in HS when this was recorded. My first Dave concert wasn’t until 4 years after 1998 in Tampa. I’ve been to close to 25 since. I could just jump into this video with my Skidz and British Knights and Sony disc-man. Great video! So nostalgic
My 1st DMB show was also Tampa 98’ !! Ice Palace … went to get tix & was sold out - was so pissed - then heard on the radio 2 weeks later they opened more seats ‘obstructed view’ - i was like who cares?! Its Dave! Our seats ended up being directly behind & above the stage - I swear he played half the show with his back to the crowd - it was an amazing show - I was a lifer - I have seen him probably 20 times since. They are unbelievable. Dave is a legend - RIP LeRoi - DMB music will live on forever
British Nights!! WooooHooooo. I had a pair!
Under the Table is still my favorite album of his. The songs were so well crafted
Same
One day your 20 and the next day you 42.
Brian Goldstein Seriously! I feel the same way. Where did the time go?!
Brian, yes exactly, what the hell happened ????
Yep..
Truth.
Yeah, totally unbelievable right?! But I swear, I still feel 20 when I’m listening to old school DMB
woah in memphis thats my hometown sooo cool!!!!
I saw this video a few years ago. I remember watching his fingers dance around the neck and thought “I might be able to do that.” One thing led to another and I started learning to play the guitar. It’s been one of the best things that have happened me, and Dave indirectly caused it to take place. Thanks Dave!
Wow this was the day before I was born... Dave is just as amazing now as he was back then. Legend!
Such a young Dave, 27 here. He's twice that age today but only gotten better like a fine wine. Mad playing and songwriting skills.
This just made my day. This video is absolute GOLD.
There’s nothing more 90s than Dave Matthews playing a solo acoustic set inside of a blockbuster.
absolutely amazing! I was in NC listening to Ants Marching on the radio but really wish then I knew this was going on just 4 hrs away 😢 My first concert was then in 96....
Wow, just wow! So cool to see Dave in that type of setting before they became huge. Such an awesome musician!
Carter a great roadie in the beginning and end! Same music and just classic.!
Well done, well done Matt and Copperpot! Thank you
Just got back from seeing him in Bend Oregon 8.28.18 and he still delivers 110%.
@Matt Owens lmao
Man this video is awesome. I felt like I was there. I just got lost in it.
Love that Jimmy Buffet video is playing in the background during second song.
Those 10 dislikes are from those who were there, talking and still suck
A simpler time when all was right in the world… take me back
Dave is just doing his thing ! and it is truly lovely,
Omg!!! This is awesome!!! I’ve been sipping on some bourbon and just imagining being there. I had just turned 14 when this happened, I wish I had heard of Dave Matthews then. I never realized Satellite and Dancing Nancies were already sung by him at this time!!! I can really hear how his voice has changed since … still great!
Whatching in 2021! Dave is already in 1994! I'm really enjoy his work! Amazing! This is a real music!
My parents were at a coffee shop in 69’ or 70’ and Don McLean played American Pie. They tell the story - as they left the were singing it and heard it on the radio a few weeks later. How lucky to be there…or at this Blockbuster in 1994!
I am convinced almost anything can be found online. I saw DMB pre-fame in 1993 or 1994 in Johnson City TN. So great this is in TN too. And yes he sounded exactly like this. We all loved him. He was a basic unknown starting to get better known. Beautiful voice.
Oh, to have seen the deep cut of all deep cuts, Spotlight, when it was still in rotation.
This is a wonderful surprise! Thanks Chester for another awesome memory
And in this one acoustic set we got: 1. A beautiful early recording of what would turn into be one of the most groundbreaking debut albums of all rock/alternative music and 2. The reason dave doesn’t take yelled out requests anymore😂❤️🦏🐘
blockbuster now that is history
I spent a month in Maryland back in -95 and totally fell for Dave and his band. This is just the Dave that i fell for.
Amazing find. Thanks for posting. A couple months later we were playing nothing but Dave Matthews at work.... the U.S. Male store in the Mall of Memphis. A place long gone like Blockbuster... :-)
For all those complaining about the talking which I can’t stand either...I kind of find it refreshing....if this were today it would be totally silent while everyone stared at their phones ignoring the amazing talent right in front of them.
Time machine. I would totally tailgate this then rent a movie. Haha.
Oh my god. Dave is so young here like a teenager even though he was probably closer to 30
Authentic from start to finish. What a 😎
It looks just like 1994. Wow. It's strange getting older.
Oh my godddd, this is amazing. 3 short years before I was born. And born into a family that loved Dave. I’m a lucky girl. ❤️
Alexandra Ryan wow...so I was seeing DMB for the first time when you were born! Making me feel old
atamagashock Nonsense! Not old, just wise. ✌🏻 Peace and love, my friend!
No one cares when you were born, Millennial.
Aug ‘94…..packing up for college(UT Knoxville). GREAT SUMMER. Thanks for posting!
im listening to all of these fantastic songs, 24 years after this was recorded, and dave still sounds the same today. This is a real gem, thank you so much for finding/posting this and thank you to those that made the original recording
Love
28 years!!
I am just really happy I got to see this. Whoever posted this thank you making my night.
Im a huge DMB fan I’m not going to lie. But....the constant requests....ssshhhhuuuuuttt uuuuuup 🙃🙃🙃
Dave is The Best.
ah damnit, i pressed play, now i can't turn off for 25 minutes
Over a month prior to the release of Under The Table And Dreaming. Everyone's at Blockbuster like, "I'm just trying to rent Sister Act 2, why is this guy making such a racket?".
Actually, this was Blockbuster Music. Blockbuster had a separate music chain in the 90s, lasted about 7 or 8 years.
@@ryanhilliard1620 Way to step on my hilarious side splitting line.
@@BookClubDisaster 😬
OH WOW He looks like a baby... love dave!!! Thanks Chester as always.
Crazy. Crazy how people are just milling around, talking in the background, while a genius is performing at Blockbuster video. lol
Vewry Excited to see this. I have not yet watched it but I bet I will be blown away. Thank you for being many generation's music.
Well he was just fanastic from day one wasn't he our little world renowned rock star Davey boy. Still meets his fans face to face up that back road up behind the Gorge every year I believe. Walks among them elbow to elbow. No one would dare step out of line. His power is palpable. Almost scary.
I can't believe people were even talking while he was playing. Listen to him. JFC, the guy is unbelievable.
this....he....changed the world.
Man it's weird seeing Dave play a Gibson.
There was just something fantastic about going to a record or video store to look at movies and music. Going online for it all takes a huge piece of that experience and leaves an empty space!
Freaking awesome. Gotta love Seal in the video in the background!! Hahaha!
He. IS. Amazing. Good lord.
All the love in the world to Dave!!! Watching this video, and picturing him and DMB rocking sold-out concerts now... it’s AWESOME! Wish I was there for this...
Dave Matthew's is such a Great talent love it ♥️
Amazing soul
oh my God!!!! that short !! what a young dave !!! this video is a relic. Thank you!!
The I'll back you up is beyond dope... He never plays it anymore.
