Cody, thank you for posting this list. I knew nothing about Napoleonic games. These games look interesting and great during a different part of world history. I saw your WW2 list. It was fine. I knew however you would get your block knocked off for that list. Don't let the haters win.
When I was much younger we managed 3 full campaign games of Empires in Arms over a 3 year period. Utterly fantastic "Diplomacy on steroids" type game but a massive commitment for 7 people.... Don't think I'll get back to that until I retire. Also hearing really good things about the new Hexasim Last Eagles games for the Grognards out there
It's a good game which deserves a 2nd edition. A lot has happened with gaming since the 80's so I firmly believe that there is much to do with the rules (not to mention the artwork).
You failed to mention two of the best: #2. Napolen at War, SPI (1975) - a simple yet superb quad-game that really conveys the feel of the battles as described by participants and (better) historians. #1. Napoleon's Last Battles - Designer's Edition, SPI 1976, with the Command Magazine counter variants (more "historical" less "balanced/gamey") - a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, where timing, use of terrain and allocation of forces is critical! It's a truly fabulous game - especially with the aforementioned counter variants! It was great to see Napoleon from Columbia Games! Still have my original 1972 copy! Still love it! Did not care for CnC Napoleonics - too many historical inaccuracies derived from regurgitated hearsay and lack of research. Sold it within a week.
Can’t believe not a single one of the incomparable grand tactical La Bataille series is here. I’m playing La Bataille d'Auerstædt with my 9 year old and we love it. Really captures the feel of tactics in this era. Try it! There’s a reason it’s still around for over 40 years.
Totally ridiculous that you have received "hate" mail because of your honest opinion. Listen man, just don't give the "plonkers" (British slang, Google only fools and horses) a moments thought. I really appreciate your time and effort, just like other channels that give the public an insight into games before hard earned cash swaps hands. Onwards and upwards! Love the channel, carry on.
Napoleon’s Triumph is a masterpiece once you fully comprehend the system, which is not easy as you need to read the designer notes to make sense of why most of the rules are what they are.
Dr. Cody, really appreciate your in depth analysis of these games. I am using them in my college courses as part of a pilot program that was based on the Army War College's use of games for education. thank you again!!!
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer War and Peace covered most of the Napoleonic period that you could either play scenarios of the actual battles with what ifs or as a Grand Campaign from 1805-15. Rules were simple to follow and the hexagonal map was like the 3rd Reich Map. Best to play 2 player but possible to play with 6 players. Good Solitare game that I took with me to South Korea. I even used the different coloured counters in the MERP system to represent Angmar-Rhudaur-Cardolan-Arthedain & Lindon. Wooden Ships allowed for ship to ship battles from the American revolution to the Napoleonic Era that allowed a degree of realism which was hard to find in a Naval battle games for the time. I have similiar one for the Civil War period called IronClads. Another one I have is War of !812 by Columbia Games with the Blocks which is a quick enjoyable 2 player game. While not a board game but a series of Computer games. Hpssims (John Tiller Games) does a lot of turn based Napoleonic-Civil War ect games that give the feel of a board game.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Good point, I assumed that you had War & Peace as it is a classic game and you had another one with the same title. My bad on that. It was an interesting list. My experience is more from the older Avalon Hill Games.
Wonderful list. I have Avalon Hills Napoleon 1st edition. This was the first block game I ever played. I loved the fog of war aspect of the game. I’ve not played Columbia Games 4th edition.
Glad to see you still making great videos... I second... third... fourth... what others have said... ignore the haters! You bring great humor and entertainment to our board game community. I also just love Commands & Colors games, and in particular Napoleonics is my favorite. It just has so much nuance that is baked right into its simplicity. It is very much a table top miniatures game in a box, which is an achievement in itself! Great stuff... gonna go watch your Top 10 WWII games next. Cheers!
I can’t believe I’ve been too busy to sit back and enjoy YT recently. I missed this video which I’ve been waiting for for some time! Great video as always and please continue to upload content that interests you, no matter what people say. Thanks. C&C Napoleonics is my and my dad’s favourite game, we’ve played all the different nations expansions and are going to play the 5th and 6th expansions soon. I’d recommend them so far just to get some variation and to see how the different nations’ mechanics work.
Okay, so what is your opinion of Avalon Hill's Empire In Arms? This is my favorite Napoleonic war game. I know it is a long game and requires much book keeping. However, I love the victory point bidding system and the need to acquire victory points to stay dominant. This system allows any of the seven player powers to win the game. Another major plus, for me, is the tactical chit selection system. With superior chit selection, a disadvantaged army has a chance to defeat a more powerful one. And if the optional rules for naval battles are used, these become more engaging. I think the game allows for great replayability. Although the time to set-up and extreme length of the game are major negatives for most gamers. I'd like to know your opinion.
I'm not surprised Command and Colors is number one. They are really fun games. They look a bit dry when you first look at the rule book and scenarios, but it just plays so well. Plenty of tense moments and replay-ability too.
Great list. I might have switched a few around but they are all on the top 10 list. Getting close to your top games of the year list. Always a good watch.
Well done Cody! I always enjoy watching your video and recommendations. I, too, agree with your #1 choice... great game and I also like "Napoleon In Europe" as my #2. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for this, your review just made me buy 'Coalitions' before it was too late! 👍 Yes C&C Napoleonic's is great! Wait until you try the expansions for 'Generals, Leaders & Tactics' as well as 'Epic'! Soon to be also 'Major Battles', takes it to another level. We are intending to be playing the Epic and Large Battles as a Demonstration (drop in - drop out game) at WellyCon 2025 in Wellington New Zealand (yes named after the Duke of Wellington, unfortunately I'm very much in the Emperor's camp though lol). You should come for a visit ? 😁 I have the original Napoleon in Europe and we do love it, don't get it out enough, 5 player game is fantastic.

Fascinating. I have been away from board wargaming for over 30 years. I only have a few left on the shelf. The only game I recognized from your list was number two, by Columbia games. I have an old copy from the Avalon Hill issue. The box you show has the logo on it which is exactly the "Gamma Two Games" logo, who I believe were the original publisher of the title. I also have the Quebec 1759 of their line. It's nice to see the good graphic quality in games these days. The components just look so much nicer in general compared to the old games from the seventies.
Thanks. The box on the thumbnail is actually from DVG Games. You are correct. We are experiences a golden age of games. Hope you get a chance to play some more.
Check out “La Grande Armee” by Georges Blond. A very good and detailed book on the Napoleonic wars! I wonder what Napoleon would have thought or said about all the books and games created about his exploits! Great video Cody! Thanks🙂
merci pour tes vidéos que je visionne avec plaisir you need to test Napoleon Saga if the theme is one of your favorites I guess it is available in the US
Have you played Memoir 44, by Days of Wonder? It sounds like it has similar mechanics as Commands and Colors (never played those) but it's based off of the invasion of Normandy and liberation of Paris in WWII, and has plastic pieces instead of wood.
Yes. Very familiar with Memoir '44. Richard Berg designed the Command and Colors System, of which Memoir '44 is a part. There are several variations from C&C, from historical games, to sci-fi, to fantasy. Great system.
Hey Cody: An interesting list for sure and it has got me doing some research on some of your choices. I can see that we probably have completely different outlooks on what we want in a Napoleonic game, but that is ok. For example at least two of your titles would be on my “Napoleonic games never to own list” 😮 Thanks for the info.
Big thanks for sharing the list Cody, strong titles😁 I still need to check out Nations in Arms ("proper" hex and counter) but also Legion of Honor (this one is more on the RPG side)
Just knew it was going to be commands and colours (British spelling). Never played the Napoleonic game but just love commands and colours ancients. Great system!
Excellent Selection of games. More Operational focus than battle focus hence the lack of hex and counter games. This is not a great loss as a focus on battle games would be different. Love the games you have chosen. Going to pick up Coalitions and add it to my collection.
Hey Cody, Can't give you any shit about your list... not the biggest Napoleonic fanboy. That being said, I have AH's Waterloo (old Coffin box game, back in the day... pre-1970's), AH also put out (to my knowledge) the first block game called Napoleon back in the day. I DO own Field Commander Napoleon by DVG... one of the most beautifully produced game ever! Really love the mechanics. Was overjoyed to hear that you put up C&C's Napoleonic... when I went into Ancients, I bought ALL the expansions... and it's only the $350.00 price tag that has kept me from already owning all that. MAYBE it's the whole "column" thing, and all that marching about ("Prussia's Glory" and "Frederick the Great" had a lot of the same thing), that slows me down. ** Would love for you to do a TOP TEN GAMES on "forgotten wars"... Spanish Civil War, Russian Civil War, Crimean War, Sino-Russian War, Boer War.... things like that.
I especially like some of the Empires in Arms two-player scenarios. A year seems to be incomplete if cannot befuddle my friend with a choice of operational chits in that game.
Thanks Cody really interesting i do like blocks too and if you have the opportunity to try Napoleon saga based on card driven just make it, vive l'empereur !
I managed to get a copy of C&C Napoleonics, just trying to find the expansions at sensible prices and in stock is a bit annoying. I still have to play it as the last year and a bit has somewhat hindered my gaming. I also backed Coalitions after watching your review, so I am looking forward to that when it’s printed. Have you tried the card game Eagles? I was introduced to it back in the late 90’s. Love the card randomness of the cards and how to play the hand and armies you have. Along with the dice rolling and my luck it can lead to fun and frustration. An eight hit low morale unit surviving every hit only to hold the elite British guards at bay is still a highlight. Along with an interesting campaign mode. It is a great card game.
Thanks for the video. I'm just interested, in what game rules are easier on your opinion? I'm just a beginner and I don't know what is the best game to start with?
War & Peace was pretty easy, but it is now out of print. Field Commander Napoleon is not difficult, but there is a lot to keep track of. Napoleon Returns 1806 is pretty light. The Waterloo Campaign is easy to learn, as is C&C Napoleonics. You might also want to check out Napoleon 1806, which I just recently played, as it is fairly accessible as well.
have always loved columbias napoleon. i can think of so many ways to expand it. solitaire... two boards... different rooms... troop info withheld... how about different boards for different battles? that should work cuz one edition had different colors for the blocks. so you could do leipzig. now im thinking use boards from tobruk and put markers on for towns. good list btw. commands and colors i want to try.
Nice list. I really like Age of Napoleon, but make sure to use the 2nd edition cards - the designer had a redesign at WBC, but I've heard nothing of it since. I wanted to love C&C, but just can't get past the command artificialities. Shakos' Napoleon 1806 and 1807 are really interesting. I also like the Eagles of the Empire series of battle games.
Being an Age of Sail enthusiast, Flying Colors must easily be my favorite Napoleonic-era game. C&C Napoleonics, Fading Glory would be in my top 5. I don’t care for too many block games, but I like the Columbia Games Napoleon in Waterloo as well.
Good list. Would swap Napoleon’s Imperium for #7 (hard pass). Have Risk Napoleon (published only in France. hunted down a copy in Netherlands with Ottoman expansion but have not played yet). Waiting for Coalitions. #2 is fantastic especially with the cards added in and an oversized printed map.
I just got the news letter saying the neopriem maps are avaible for a few games Napoleon being one I was wondering if you had it or planned to get it. Its a little expensive $149.
Hey TEX ,i whish i was out here on rocky Top ,down in valley and the hills, ain't no telephon bills , ps are u any where near Lubbock, buddy , buddy holly , I'm stuck in blighty matey , nice day 😮
Cody, I think you missed a really good one. I like NAPOLEON AGAINST EUROPE from Hexasim. Its Grand Strategic 2player Card Driven along the same lines as Paths of Glory(except NAE uses Areas Control and not Point to Point as POG).
Nepoleons triumph is my all time favourite but I can see why it's limited as it only focuses on the 1805 battle of austerlitz, you can command entire corps and the fog of war effect as they are blocks and no cards or dice, I admit I like these features but not having them in this game and that it works is truly unique
But the real question is what is Napoleon's favourite No.1 pudding ???? ... ... ... .... ... Lemon Marengo pie. ... .. (that one didn't even deserve a smirk).
Commands and Colors! Curious, as this is probably the simplest and fastest of them all and yet very enjoyable. What does this say about our desire for complexity and depth? Is complexity overrated? Hmm...
Not at all. I like hex and counter games, but in the past when I've made videos like this I get a lot of negative comments from because they don't like the games that I do. Usually this is followed by a list of their favorite games that are exclusively hex and counter games. I made the comment so that people who are expecting a list of hex and counter games won't feel compelled to watch the video and post a disparaging comment.
Obviously leaving out Zucher series (OSG), War & Peace (both versions) and Nations/Empires in Arms (Avalon Hill/Compass) is understandable, as those are all "bigger" hex and counters games. BUT you should check "The Invasion of Russia" and/or "1813" from Europa Simulazioni which are intermediate complexity games with GORGEOUS components. Cheers from Canada!
I enjoyed Fading Glory from GMT (four battles from Napoleonic 20 series) and Worthington Games The 100 Days and At the gates of Moscow (both I've been told are not too different from C&C Napoleonics, however, I cannot say I have not pay C&C yet) Here's a lame joke: Napoleon almost won at Waterloo, he was just a little short.
Even though it doesn't fit in a top ten list, I would have added an honorable mention for SPI's "Napoleon at Waterloo". Is it a great game? No. Is it even a good game? Also no. It did, however, serve as the gateway drug to get countless people into wargaming.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer yes, it’s a story of a gamer looking for the perfect blend of simple rules, complex gameplay and historical emersion that war games usually lack.
Hmm... Not a single overlap ... and I even have some light games too. I don't think I have 10 though... But "Empires in Arms" and "Eagles of France" ... and I guess "Napoleon 18xx". (no, not a train game)

That’s a great idea. I don’t know if there are 10 “forgotten war” war games that I would rank highly, but now I’ll start thinking about it. Thanks!
Phalanx’ Age of Napoleon is brilliant.
Indeed. Great game.
I especially like some of the Empires in Arms two-player scenarios. A year seems to be incomplete if cannot befuddle my friend with a choice of operational chits in that game.
Sounds like a fun game.
Trafalgar Editions' "Austerlitz 1805" and "Waterloo" games are exceptional. Ex. Freakin'. 'Ceptional.
Fantastic!
Thanks Cody really interesting i do like blocks too and if you have the opportunity to try Napoleon saga based on card driven just make it, vive l'empereur !
Thanks!
I used to love napoleon in Europe like 20 years ago
Fun game.
Haven’t played that one. Sounds interesting.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer it’s another Columbus Games product. They also did the American Civil War card game as well.
I've played almost all of the Command & Colors games EXCEPT for Napoleonics. I guess I'll have to break down and give it a try.
Indeed. Great game.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Thank you so much. I'll definitely try one of them.
have always loved columbias napoleon. i can think of so many ways to expand it. solitaire... two boards... different rooms... troop info withheld... how about different boards for different battles? that should work cuz one edition had different colors for the blocks. so you could do leipzig. now im thinking use boards from tobruk and put markers on for towns. good list btw. commands and colors i want to try.
Thanks.
Going to watch, but before I do. I’ll comment to me, Napoleon’s last battles (quad) and Wellingtons Victory better be in here.
Yikes!
Empires and Arms and McLauhlin's The Napoleonic Wars deserve to be on this list. Perhaps you have not played them, both excellent.
I haven’t played either.
Thanks!
Do you think Field Commander Napoleon would work for campaign use with Command and Colors?
I suppose you could make it work if you really put some time and thought into it. FCN is solitaire, and C&CN is two player.
Being an Age of Sail enthusiast, Flying Colors must easily be my favorite Napoleonic-era game. C&C Napoleonics, Fading Glory would be in my top 5. I don’t care for too many block games, but I like the Columbia Games Napoleon in Waterloo as well.
Block wargames aren’t necessarily my favorite, but there are some I really like. Napoleon 4th Edition is one of the best.
I havnt watched the video yet but I already know columbia games is going to make an appearance on this list. Haha. Real fans of you know.
Danke!
To each their own. I loved NR1815. Napoleon 4th Ed. is really great, for sure!
I just got the news letter saying the neopriem maps are avaible for a few games Napoleon being one I was wondering if you had it or planned to get it. Its a little expensive $149.
For which game?
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer They had several but I was talking about Napoleon. I would like Napoleon and EuroFront.
The Napoleonic Wars by GMT was awesome ?
I haven't played it, but heard good things.
Hi, great list.
Have you tried W1815 or Risk Napoleon ?
Thank you.
I haven’t. Good?
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Risk N, I am interested in a seasoned gamer's opinion; W1815, for my taste, is awesome.
Napoleon 1806/1807....They will DEFINITELY be on your updated list!
Heard good things.
Hey TEX ,i whish i was out here on rocky Top ,down in valley and the hills, ain't no telephon bills , ps are u any where near Lubbock, buddy , buddy holly , I'm stuck in blighty matey , nice day 😮
First rate!
Cody, I think you missed a really good one. I like NAPOLEON AGAINST EUROPE from Hexasim. Its Grand Strategic 2player Card Driven along the same lines as Paths of Glory(except NAE uses Areas Control and not Point to Point as POG).
Interesting. I don’t think I’ve heard of that one.
Nepoleons triumph is my all time favourite but I can see why it's limited as it only focuses on the 1805 battle of austerlitz, you can command entire corps and the fog of war effect as they are blocks and no cards or dice, I admit I like these features but not having them in this game and that it works is truly unique
Interesting. I’ve heard of this game but never played it.
was thinking about getting back into board war gaming but I am put off by the crazy prices
Some games are not cheap, for sure. Other are more reasonably priced. It depends on what kind of games you want.
But the real question is what is Napoleon's favourite No.1 pudding ????
...
...
...
....
...
Lemon Marengo pie.

..
(that one didn't even deserve a smirk).
Ha! You!!!
War and Peace 7th - coming out on the Computer- Steam and KickStarter
Awesome!
Commands and Colors! Curious, as this is probably the simplest and fastest of them all and yet very enjoyable. What does this say about our desire for complexity and depth? Is complexity overrated? Hmm...
All I know is, it is the most fun game on my list for me.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer C&C is awesome! Hope to get Nap next. Many thanks for the videos.
Napoleon 1806 and Napoleon 1807 are both really good games. 1807 is easily in my top 3 war games.
They look good.
“Not going to see a lot of hex and counter games here.” The condescension, it burns.
Thank you! I will look into them.
I enjoyed Fading Glory from GMT (four battles from Napoleonic 20 series) and Worthington Games The 100 Days and At the gates of Moscow (both I've been told are not too different from C&C Napoleonics, however, I cannot say I have not pay C&C yet)
Here's a lame joke: Napoleon almost won at Waterloo, he was just a little short.
Bah! Thanks!
Even though it doesn't fit in a top ten list, I would have added an honorable mention for SPI's "Napoleon at Waterloo". Is it a great game? No. Is it even a good game? Also no. It did, however, serve as the gateway drug to get countless people into wargaming.
Interesting.
I thought Napoleon by Columbia games is great. Like to try Command & Colors at some point.
Both great games.
Thanks for the good joke on a shitty day
Thank you. Here's hoping for a better tomorrow.
Napoleon’s Triumph. End of story.
There was a story? No one told me about a story. I like stories.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer yes, it’s a story of a gamer looking for the perfect blend of simple rules, complex gameplay and historical emersion that war games usually lack.
Here for the jokes 😂. Nah, love this guy?!
Fantastic! Thanks!
Your title should be top 10 "Strategic" Nap games.
Not 1 tactical among the List...Aka-- Clash of Arms - La Battle Series
C&C Napoleon is tactical. And there are several Operational - level games on the list as well.
Hmm... Not a single overlap ... and I even have some light games too.
I don't think I have 10 though... But "Empires in Arms" and "Eagles of France" ... and I guess "Napoleon 18xx". (no, not a train game)
Ha! Too each their own. Thanks.
I got age of Napoleon never play with it. Do you want it ?
I appreciate the offer. Right now, I don't know when I'd get it to the table, though.
If you want it just tell me its a free gift.
@@stephanegrimard2687 I appreciate that.
Compass’ Coalition is a mess of a game. Compass is producing 1st edition “playtest” kits. Wait for a 2nd edition for a “cleaned-up” game.
I agree that some more playtesting would have been good. But if you were willing to work around some of the wonkiness, it was fun.
Coalitions looked so cool, but lost all interest in it when all they crap they added to a $60 game totaled $600+!
Really, it was over $600? I hadn't heard that.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer for all the added stuff, yeah - it was that or pretty close to that.
@@ryanmlozano Seems pricey.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer It was $270 for the all-in pledge, not $600+, and besides all that was optional - you didn't have to (or rather: "don't have to" since the late pledge is on) buy anything other than the core game :)
@@srdjanjovanovski3878 Thank you for the clarification.
Worthington’s War and Peace is crap…worthless.
I enjoyed it.
