I never comment, but this was such beautiful conversation between such beautiful beings, homage to my dear teachers, and thank you Steve for making this happen.
Thankyou. I really admire Steve’s rare capacity to allow his fascinating guests amplitude to tell their own stories while also discretely guiding the discussion at key points. Very dignified and intelligent and also well-informed.
This was a fabulous interview and display of cross cultural exchange.... a westerner with deep knowledge of Tibetan culture and history, and a Tibetan with deep knowledge of western culture and history. I learned a lot and will be listening again. Thank you!
There is a lot of information on this conversation...... insightful and great interview. I was enjoying it a lot and will re-watch it again. Thank you. 🙏👍🪷☸️
Last 5 mins. or so Steve looking slightly bemused is priceless ! Time to learn Tibetan Steve ? Thanks for the grins and chuckles Lama Glenn and Dr. Nida and further clues and thought provoking info ! May All beings be happy ! May the Dharma suffuse and transform all ignorance ! ! !
Great interview. I learned a lot about the historical development and political influences in the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism. Lama Glenn's teachings are amazing and his books are great too, looking forward to checking out Dr. Nida Chenagstang's work at some point too!
Wonderful interview discussing very important points. The bit on secrecy was particularly fascinating. Loved the end of the interview in Tibetan. You should have just dropped a "I was going to say the same thing!" . Loved it. Stay blessed. 🙏🙏🙏
After having watched the video, I have to add : It is a very, very, very interesting meeting. Thank you Guru Viking, Thank you Dr Nida, Thank you Lama Glenn Mullin :) 👍🙏❤🙏👍
Hello dear Guru Viking. Thank you very much for your work, I found it quite inspiring for my own practice. I was wondering if you maybe could give me your opinion on a question I am having regarding my own meditation practice right now. In your experience, would you say that intermittend fasting, not eating after solar noon, is something beneficial to the practice? Maybe even required to do for achieving deeper meditation? I would be happy to hear your opinion on this matter. Have a good day and all the best!
There is another reason for secrecy re Highest Yoga Tantra: because it involves manipulation of very subtle body energies it must be handled very skilfully and precisely otherwise physical imbalances can occur as well as mental one’s as the energy winds and our mind which rides in dependence upon them are intimately related. An example would be misapplication of tummo techniques.
Very good. Both Glen and Nida have real knowledge of the tradition according to Buddhist accounts. The Bonpo say there was a fully enlightened tradition in Tibet way before Buddhism, with the nine stages complete, that Buddhists tried to wipe out in Tibet. Sangarakshita a demon who persecuted the Bonpos, including burning whole communities in their Bon temples which were destroyed. Bonpos given the choice of converting, death, or exile. Padmasambhava, probably a mythical and pseudo epigraphic device anyway, was a son of a Bon siddha who saved Bon texts by changing various names so they looked Buddhist. So many Buddhist termas, they say, are Bon texts adapted for the times. I don't know what the absolute historical truth is, all I can assert is that the Buddhist account might be a little skewed and self exculpatory. But enjoyed hearing these two Buddhist scholars and all round good guys imo.
Sorry there was bon but their practice were based on shamanism, if you use logic , you will know. If there was wisdom , why Bon emperors invited Buddhist master from India & china ?
First we have to define object of negation. "Self" is too vague. This is the key point of Lama Tsongapha. We negate independent of cause and conditions, unchangle, indivisible, self existing entity we label and expeerience of self. Emptiness means our exsitense is absent of this partifcular seld. Which is not complete negation of existense per se. So training make sense if is just creation of causes for sanity based in realisitc view of reality Anyhow thats my limited understanding

At Anuyoga time, the body is not the body, if you see this way you are just reifying it = more obstacles. I disagree that the 6 yogas is less secret then atiyoga.
I must admit,I often wonder whether practitioners who have great scholarly knowledge, can also walk the walk...Not wishing to suggest that either of your guests cannot walk the walk...but rather I would like to hear more about the experiential side of travelling the path .

This should be interesting.
Possibly you could ask the difficult (impossible?) question, "If there is no self, who or what is training the mind?"
the provisional collection of skandhas, upon which the label of "self" can be misattributed.
The designated self which is functional in the relative world.
First we have to define object of negation. "Self" is too vague. This is the key point of Lama Tsongapha. Well they are not going to knock on your door and tell you meditate like this and that. Just move and go to a meditation class, workshop, retreat.
