My son started college this Fall and found a D & D club. He has come to love it and he has found his people, which we are so thankful for! We all decided to learn to play so we can do this with him. 😀
I love the creativity that runs in your family! Also, I recommend getting smog some reptile carpet instead of sand. Sand can get in their eyes and cause infection(which makes no sense to me since they are outside in it), but that is what several vets have told me about our beardie.

I pray north and south & family read my comment. I'm a very experienced reptile keeper and I'm so over the moon your lovely family has gained interest in the amazing world of herpotology. I just want to ensure your family enters this fun and educational hobby correctly and at full force. Your enclosures are decent! and I'm happy to see you have done some research. I just wanted to ensure your aware of the risks of keeping wild caught friends. Introducing reptiles into captivity is always a stressful and complicated process. More than likely your lizard friend likely has natural parasites, however this can become quite an issue in captivity. I would strongly suggest you take your new friend to a vet with a fecal sample to get some results. If your lizard has parasites it is imperative you treat for this and remove the parasites if you wish for this lizard to live a long full life in captivity. This can be a little expensive. Odd are this lizard will never feel secure and comfortable in his captive environment due to the fact he was wild caught. He will never become an ideal pet. This is truly a shame for I wish that your children grow their passion for herpotology. I Would STRONGLY reccomend you adopt/ purchase a captive bred reptile that way it is calm, healthy, and an ideal pet. This will be significantly more fulfilling for your children so they can actually handle and interact with the animal without it going thru an enormous amount of stress. Personally I would recommend a pet snake like corn snake or ball python for they are the easiest, safest, calmest reptiles one can ask for. And very very tolerant with children and constant attention. I wish for the best with your childrens adventure into herpotology!
If your not feeling snakes tons of lizards options aswell. I Would reccomend a leopard gecko or bearded dragon. Both calm and easy to handle lizards that your children can interact with daily without the lizard dying of stress.
And as others have stated yes sand isn't an ideal substrate. However i don't wish to nit-pick. I would just reccomend releasing this lizard and THOROUGHLY cleaning the enclosure and supplies and replacing it with a better captive bred PET reptile. Make it a homeschool project for your children to thoroughly research everything it needs and setup prior to bringing home. Would be a ton of fun and a good exercise for responsible herptoculture.

I agree and highly recommend a corn snake! I had one as a teenager and they are SUPER easy to take care of, they don't get too big, and they like to be held.
I am so glad you made this video. I really needed to hear this message. I have been having doubts creep in about how I am homeschooling (unschooling), thinking that living life and bringing the kids along isn't learning.. even though I know that is just one type of lesson. That giving space to play & explore & create & PROCESS (lay about) is learning. I was beginning to feel guilty and overwhelmed. So thanks. I really need to hear this message. Many blessings.
Also, your set up for the Fense Lizard Smog is good, he has plenty of space wich is amazing! However You should just research on a few things. One of the major issues though is the sand. You don’t want him to have impaction. (That’s when he eats and breathes the sand in on accident. This will get stuck in his throat and digestive tract. It really will hurt him and can cause irreversible damage.).... there are actually lots of cheaper options than sand anyways. Like, eco-earth or reptile carpet.I’m currently working on becoming an exotic veterinarian. I’ll have my doctorate in less than three months now. Please, If you have any questions at all feel free to ask. I can also give you some good websites to research on if you would like. This message is just for informational purposes. Thank you so much for this!! I loved every second. After watching your unschooling explanation a few weeks ago I read "Dumbing us down" and I am totally on board. I plan on raising my kids this way. I've already starting implementing a lot of it and I was hoping you would post this exact video. Haters gonna hate, but this is hitting the mark for me. It really struck a chord and feels like an answer to prayer. Thank you for your courage to be different and sharing it with people like me. I probably wouldn't have found it otherwise.
Make sure they still do math curriculum. Math is like building a home, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up, meaning if your child one day would like to have a profession that includes math, they need to have been doing it since they were young. More than adding and subtracting, algebra for sure. I recommend calculus. Giving your kids the best chance means making sure they have every (well trained) tool in their toolbelt they can.
Thank you for the explanation of unschooling. I find it super interesting and I wish I’d heard of it when we raised our kids. I am totally supportive of you and your choices for your children/family. They are each individuals with very diverse personalities. Great family.

It is too bad that schools don't let kids learn this way, rather than expecting kids to fit into one mold like robots so they can be at the same place at the same time in order to pass standardized testing (and yet so many still don't). This is one of the best videos you've shared in awhile...thanks! It stinks that so many people commenting are focused on bossing you around as to what they think you should or shouldn't do. Kudos to you for sharing with us in spite of those folks.
@@eddsaw1566 Granted it is for educational purposes. But they can study the lizard at least outdoors and at the same time get some fresh air into their lungs. Simple - problem solved. As long as the kids are clad well for all types of weather. Leave nature in nature. Get the kids out in nature and away from plastic toys and excessive use of tecnology. Blythe Kelly zoos recreate a natural environment....small glass aquarium is not the same...and animals are tended by skilled vets...these are great kids, hate to pick on them, but this large lizard should have been left free in my humble opinion 🦎 I admit I don’t feel the same about certain insects...
I really enjoyed this video! We began homeschooling 5 years ago. At first I started out "school at home" with lots of curriculum, then gradually moved more towards unschooling each year. My 13 and 11 year olds are currently completely unschooling. It is a scary change when we have been conditioned to believe that we must force our children to learn certain things, in a certain order, by a certain time. Unschooling is so much more natural for our family. It looks so different from day to day and from kid to kid. My 13 year old is excited to begin college to study Art/Computer Graphics so actually does use some curriculum, but the difference is the learning is completely self-directed. I never "make" her "do school." My youngest is interested in fitness and a healthy lifestyle. She goes to the gym, cooks, and watches A&P courses online. I have zero concerns that they will be unable to attend college if they want or that they will be unable to get a good job. They are learning how to pursue their interests, and what those interests even are.
Our son & daughter in law live in Chattanooga & they have a Smaug too! And he looks just like that one. He's very used to them now & crawls on them. Also lives in a aquarium with a heat lamp & live crickets just like your Smaug! Pretty neat!

Using a curriculum now but it seems to keep us home and not out experiencing the world as much because we feel like we need to get it all done. We went to a local forest this week and it was so great. We definitely need to get out more.
Unschooling Question - You mention in the video that the kids schooling is "interest based" which is so amazing but I was wondering how it works for core subjects? You know, subjects that most kids won't necessarily be drawn too because they're not "fun" per say but essential basic knowledge that one uses throughout their entire life. Things like basic math, grammar, spelling & writing skills etc. Do you have any "mandatory" lessons in these (and other) subjects for the kids at all?
We don’t! And you would be surprised by how much those “uninteresting” subjects actually become interesting when they are learned naturally and through real world applications! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found pages of math problems around the house made by kids without having any hand in it myself.
As children pursue their interests they improve in these skills as well. The same way we do as adults when we start researching things we are interested in, inquire about things through email, and communicate with others online. It’s amazing how we start to pay attention to proper grammar when it matters. I didn’t really know how to write a proper paper until I was IN college, when I actually needed to. What’s crazy was how much better my writing was than those involved on group projects who had graduated from a more typical school.
Also Dungeons and Dragons have alot of that involved. We play it all the time in our family. When my daughter struggled in school we did this at home. Her english/grammar improved by writing about plot lines and characters. You learn complicated math in the dice rolling and contacts in the game. It's very involved and also teaches so many different things.
Laura Coleman I am very confused when people say DnD has complicated math. I have played DnD and it is pretty basic stuff. I worry that children will never learn algebra and just learn multiplication/division/addition/subtraction if their math education is based purely off simple calculations.
I love that you guys homeschool I went to public school and it was soul sucking and I had teachers telling me and my parents I was dumb and we should lower our expectations for my adult life I am a licensed med tech and I am always learning and I am smarter then people think I am I learn differently and that is what is wrong with school

We are a homeschool family too! My oldest son had done an experiment with crickets. They tend to be territorial. He had some and then none, they killed each other! We had to get more so he could finish his project. Good luck with all the fun activities!!
Put a toilet paper tube in the cricket container....they will hang in there and the tube is easy to pick up and shake a few crickets off. You can mist your crickets with water to keep them alive until dinner time. :o
Wow. I found your channel around the time you were in the the northwest of the US (I think) making your way south down the coast. I guess it was the last third or so of your time in the RV. I've heard you describe your history and process several times but for some reason this time it felt different to my ears - probably to do with my own life journey. What I love about your story is how many different chapters it has, how it's not about "getting it right" - something that's been a bit of a driving force in my life and that has led me astray simply because life is often about being perfectly imperfect at the right time. It's taken me a few years of watching to really absorb this message, which just goes to show you how educating by being role models goes. It takes time. But I feel that what I've learned from watching your channel is important for my soul and my life. So thank you!

So sorry to hear. We're a home-educating (unschooling, in fact) family from the UK. There are many families home-educating here, plenty unschooling, and there are so many home-ed groups / co-ops / outings in most areas. Feel free to message if you'd like a list of resources (videos, books, blog posts) to help open your parents' minds, in the event they're prepared to look into this option for you at some point. Maybe some day they'll be able to support you trialling home-education just for a term or two, to see how it goes...It's not an irreversible decision. (And re your anxiety, if any of it is school related, remember it's 'the system' and not you! Tracy Moore ive only just seen your comment but thank you so much. My anxiety is pretty much exclusively school-based, but some things have changed in the last week which means a support plan has been made which lets the school get extra money to help me, and they have to specify what help they are going to offer me to the council, so things will hopefully get better. I only have about 5 months left until i finish high school, and my support plan will mean i get a lot of support and i think the style will be better. One of the options we are exploring is flexi-schooling, which will allow me to stay registered at my school but do some of my work at home. I wish i had been homeschooled, i have been asking my parents for many years but switching now would have little point. Thanks for your suggestions, i found the blog posts very interesting.
It's strange I miss seeing Elijah in the vlogs since he went to Japan to serve as a Missionary for his church . I love the beautiful area where your presently living now . Living in Florida I miss the trees changing beautiful colors this time of year . Talking about Trick or Treaters . Here's a good story for you . Friends of my sister and her husband that live in Tampa , Florida decorate their house to the max on Halloween had 2,000 Trick or Treaters come to there house last year . How they know is they keep track w/a handheld counter each time each Trick or Treater comes to their door . Can you imagine how much candy they have to buy . It must cost them a small fortune to decorate their house and buy candy etc .
D&D also teaches cooperation, problem solving, and how to deal with defeat. Life skills that are not taught well outside of games that require everyone to work together for a common goal.

Jane Knight where do you think lizards from the pet store came from in the first place? All animals were wild and free until they were caught and tamed and then bred for selling. The Knorps are merely eliminating the middle man, so to speak. I think it’s great that their kids get the chance to learn and care for the animals God gave man dominion over. And they are providing it with everything it needs to survive. I don’t think lizards are as sensitive as we humans. He seems quite content and well cared for, to me. He still gets to exercise his instincts in his lovely habitat. And the kids will NEVER forget this wonderful experience! That’s what it’s all about!
@@mclemay6703 This is entirely untrue. Reptiles sold in pet stores are captive bread and are used to life in captivity. A wild reptile will have a difficult and stressful time adjusting to captivity. It's totally different. And reptiles are super sensitive creatures. You need to have proper, and very specific lighting and heating depending on the species or else they cannot digest their food and die.
@@BeefyKylie petsmart imports most of their lizards from other countries though lol. only things that are usually captive bred are the standard bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and ball pythons. everything else that is "exotic" is wild caught

Using food coloring is great to color your hair. Don't mix with water on black hair. But lighter hair use some water. I did this for St. Patrick's Day and July 4th.

I would love some ideas about unschooling and teaching the basics of writing and reading. We do lots of interest based learning but have a 6 year old who is having a hard time with letters and such

Still not understanding the unschooling. Kinda just looks like what we do on my kids off days from school🤷🏼♀️. I do agree that not all children learn well in a classroom though. I may not agree with unschooling, but I do however respect every parents right to choose what works for their family. You gotta do what works for you! Nothing but love💕✌
That's exactly what I thought. I unschooled my kids all summer and every weekend. But I'm glad they had school too. I loved having my kids around the house as much as I could I enjoy their company. But they grew as people in high school so much and learned so much in marching band traveling all over. But to each his own I enjoy the channel and would love if my grandkids were home schooled. Boredom is good for kiddos. When my students would tell me they were bored, I would say "good" They seemed to use it as a threat like it was my job to entertain them. If you can read you never need to be bored. As a student I was always getting into trouble for reading. We did not have a TV till I was 13. I think that was big for my love of reading. You guys do a great job of nurturing their interests.
I’m new year and this is interesting I don’t have kids yet so its a thing I think about already. However what happens when they want to go to university the learning will be different? Do you prepare them for that? If they want to study something? Sorry if i sound ignorant would prefer to ask someone who is doing this already! ❤
I love your channel and family and I know you don't love these types of comments, but I really hate seeing vloggers holding a camera while driving, especially with kids in the car. I don't think it's safe. Please consider having the camera or phone in a holder or just wait until you're stopped to film. I'm sure many don't think it's a big deal but it has led to accidents- it's actually illegal here in Canada. thanks for considering this!
With unschooling you won’t have the anxiety of dropping your kids off at school and wondering if thats going to be the last time you see them. It’s cruel but it’s the sad truth 😕

Make sure they still do math curriculum. Math is like building a home, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up, meaning if your child one day would like to have a profession that includes math, they need to have been doing it since they were young. More than adding and subtracting, algebra for sure. I recommend calculus. Giving your kids the best chance means making sure they have every (well trained) tool in their toolbelt they can.

Blythe Kelly zoos recreate a natural environment....small glass aquarium is not the same...and animals are tended by skilled vets...these are great kids, hate to pick on them, but this large lizard should have been left free in my humble opinion 🦎 I admit I don’t feel the same about certain insects...

I really enjoyed this video! We began homeschooling 5 years ago. At first I started out "school at home" with lots of curriculum, then gradually moved more towards unschooling each year. My 13 and 11 year olds are currently completely unschooling. It is a scary change when we have been conditioned to believe that we must force our children to learn certain things, in a certain order, by a certain time. Unschooling is so much more natural for our family. It looks so different from day to day and from kid to kid. My 13 year old is excited to begin college to study Art/Computer Graphics so actually does use some curriculum, but the difference is the learning is completely self-directed. I never "make" her "do school." My youngest is interested in fitness and a healthy lifestyle. She goes to the gym, cooks, and watches A&P courses online. I have zero concerns that they will be unable to attend college if they want or that they will be unable to get a good job. They are learning how to pursue their interests, and what those interests even are.

Our son & daughter in law live in Chattanooga & they have a Smaug too! And he looks just like that one. He's very used to them now & crawls on them. Also lives in a aquarium with a heat lamp & live crickets just like your Smaug! Pretty neat!
Thanks for sharing your life with us. We are just starting out homeschooling. Using a curriculum now but it seems to keep us home and not out experiencing the world as much because we feel like we need to get it all done. We went to a local forest this week and it was so great. We definitely need to get out more.
Unschooling Question - You mention in the video that the kids schooling is "interest based" which is so amazing but I was wondering how it works for core subjects? You know, subjects that most kids won't necessarily be drawn too because they're not "fun" per say but essential basic knowledge that one uses throughout their entire life. Things like basic math, grammar, spelling & writing skills etc. Do you have any "mandatory" lessons in these (and other) subjects for the kids at all?
We don’t! And you would be surprised by how much those “uninteresting” subjects actually become interesting when they are learned naturally and through real world applications! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found pages of math problems around the house made by kids without having any hand in it myself.
As children pursue their interests they improve in these skills as well. The same way we do as adults when we start researching things we are interested in, inquire about things through email, and communicate with others online. It’s amazing how we start to pay attention to proper grammar when it matters. I didn’t really know how to write a proper paper until I was IN college, when I actually needed to. What’s crazy was how much better my writing was than those involved on group projects who had graduated from a more typical school.

Also Dungeons and Dragons have alot of that involved. We play it all the time in our family. When my daughter struggled in school we did this at home. Her english/grammar improved by writing about plot lines and characters. You learn complicated math in the dice rolling and contacts in the game. It's very involved and also teaches so many different things.
Laura Coleman I am very confused when people say DnD has complicated math. I have played DnD and it is pretty basic stuff. I worry that children will never learn algebra and just learn multiplication/division/addition/subtraction if their math education is based purely off simple calculations.

We are a homeschool family too! My oldest son had done an experiment with crickets. They tend to be territorial. He had some and then none, they killed each other! We had to get more so he could finish his project. Good luck with all the fun activities!!

Put a toilet paper tube in the cricket container....they will hang in there and the tube is easy to pick up and shake a few crickets off. You can mist your crickets with water to keep them alive until dinner time. :o
Wow. I found your channel around the time you were in the the northwest of the US (I think) making your way south down the coast. I guess it was the last third or so of your time in the RV. I've heard you describe your history and process several times but for some reason this time it felt different to my ears - probably to do with my own life journey. What I love about your story is how many different chapters it has, how it's not about "getting it right" - something that's been a bit of a driving force in my life and that has led me astray simply because life is often about being perfectly imperfect at the right time. It's taken me a few years of watching to really absorb this message, which just goes to show you how educating by being role models goes. It takes time. But I feel that what I've learned from watching your channel is important for my soul and my life. So thank you!

Yay Knorpps! Unschooling looks so great, I’m in british secondary school, I have really bad anxiety and want todo home Ed but my parents are willing to learn about it so I can’t.
So sorry to hear. We're a home-educating (unschooling, in fact) family from the UK. There are many families home-educating here, plenty unschooling, and there are so many home-ed groups / co-ops / outings in most areas. Feel free to message if you'd like a list of resources (videos, books, blog posts) to help open your parents' minds, in the event they're prepared to look into this option for you at some point. Maybe some day they'll be able to support you trialling home-education just for a term or two, to see how it goes...It's not an irreversible decision. (And re your anxiety, if any of it is school related, remember it's 'the system' and not you! Check out some of Peter Gray's blog posts at Freedom to Learn on Psychology Today; he's written many posts about school-induced anxiety.) Sending thoughts to you and wishing you luck. Tracy Moore ive only just seen your comment but thank you so much. My anxiety is pretty much exclusively school-based, but some things have changed in the last week which means a support plan has been made which lets the school get extra money to help me, and they have to specify what help they are going to offer me to the council, so things will hopefully get better. I only have about 5 months left until i finish high school, and my support plan will mean i get a lot of support and i think the style will be better. One of the options we are exploring is flexi-schooling, which will allow me to stay registered at my school but do some of my work at home. I wish i had been homeschooled, i have been asking my parents for many years but switching now would have little point. Thanks for your suggestions, i found the blog posts very interesting.

It's strange I miss seeing Elijah in the vlogs since he went to Japan to serve as a Missionary for his church . I love the beautiful area where your presently living now . Living in Florida I miss the trees changing beautiful colors this time of year . Talking about Trick or Treaters . Here's a good story for you . Friends of my sister and her husband that live in Tampa , Florida decorate their house to the max on Halloween had 2,000 Trick or Treaters come to there house last year . How they know is they keep track w/a handheld counter each time each Trick or Treater comes to their door . Can you imagine how much candy they have to buy . It must cost them a small fortune to decorate their house and buy candy etc .

Jane Knight where do you think lizards from the pet store came from in the first place? All animals were wild and free until they were caught and tamed and then bred for selling. The Knorps are merely eliminating the middle man, so to speak. I think it’s great that their kids get the chance to learn and care for the animals God gave man dominion over. And they are providing it with everything it needs to survive. I don’t think lizards are as sensitive as we humans. He seems quite content and well cared for, to me. He still gets to exercise his instincts in his lovely habitat. And the kids will NEVER forget this wonderful experience! That’s what it’s all about!
@@mclemay6703 This is entirely untrue. Reptiles sold in pet stores are captive bread and are used to life in captivity. A wild reptile will have a difficult and stressful time adjusting to captivity. It's totally different. And reptiles are super sensitive creatures. You need to have proper, and very specific lighting and heating depending on the species or else they cannot digest their food and die.

@@BeefyKylie petsmart imports most of their lizards from other countries though lol. only things that are usually captive bred are the standard bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and ball pythons. everything else that is "exotic" is wild caught

Using food coloring is great to color your hair. Don't mix with water on black hair. But lighter hair use some water. I did this for St. Patrick's Day and July 4th.

I’m terrified of lizards, big and small😩. It’s a totally irrational fear I’ve has since I was a kid, even teeny tiny skinks I can’t even look at them. Eeeewww 🤢! It’s coming into Summer here in Australia and the little skinks are EVERYWHERE😭!

Still not understanding the unschooling. Kinda just looks like what we do on my kids off days from school🤷🏼♀️. I do agree that not all children learn well in a classroom though. I may not agree with unschooling, but I do however respect every parents right to choose what works for their family. You gotta do what works for you! Nothing but love💕✌
That's exactly what I thought. I unschooled my kids all summer and every weekend. But I'm glad they had school too. I loved having my kids around the house as much as I could I enjoy their company. But they grew as people in high school so much and learned so much in marching band traveling all over. But to each his own I enjoy the channel and would love if my grandkids were home schooled. The world is all about choices now a days. Have a great holiday season everyone.

Boredom is good for kiddos. When my students would tell me they were bored, I would say "good" They seemed to use it as a threat like it was my job to entertain them. If you can read you never need to be bored. As a student I was always getting into trouble for reading. We did not have a TV till I was 13. I think that was big for my love of reading. You guys do a great job of nurturing their interests.

I love your channel and family and I know you don't love these types of comments, but I really hate seeing vloggers holding a camera while driving, especially with kids in the car. I don't think it's safe. Please consider having the camera or phone in a holder or just wait until you're stopped to film. I'm sure many don't think it's a big deal but it has led to accidents- it's actually illegal here in Canada. thanks for considering this!
