I've always wondered why out of all the Kirby enemies, there was just some short guy with a handlebar moustache trying to beat Kirby, it took me a long time to realise that was Sword Knight! Also, King DeDeDe wearing a TOP HAT in a western setting is comedic genius.
I never defeated Dedede 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺 as a kid either. I did defeat him several times, though, by just guessing the right time to hit the button and getting lucky. XD
It may be easier to do this with your eyes closed and focus entirely on the sound. I've done this with Animal Crossing's fishing and I believe it may work just as well here.

What's funnier is when you realize king dedede is wearing a top hat over his normal hat, so he's just wearing 2 hats.

It makes sense too, the human body reacts to sound faster than sight, so you'd instinctively react much faster

Its just the fact disabling one of your sense boost the other senses
