How would you describe your personality?
I'm definitely a shy and quiet person, I always have been.

I just love this! I get so worn out with peopling. It's encouraging to see you giving yourself permission to just be yourself!

When you first started out as a nurse with all these extroverts around you; did you ever feel so inferior that you had to let them know what kind of person you are. The lady training me is the first person to treat me horrible. She’s my complete opposite and loves to make me look bad. I’m on day 5 of my unit and I’m struggling with learning since she’s super quick and doesn’t like showing me the same thing over and over again. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’m sorry you are having that experience @Jacque Massi thankfully I did not experience that (but I have witnessed it). My advice would be to speak to your manager and find a new preceptor. Once your relationship is hindering your learning opportunities then it is time to move on from it. Have you seen anyone else on the unit who is more of a teacher? Have you bonded with anyone else that you feel would be a good preceptor for you? Sometimes personalities just don’t mix well and that’s ok but, don’t let it continue to the point where it affects your learning. Sorry for such a long paragraph lol. Hope this helps ❤️

@@chrisharris2367 going back as a floor nurse? 7 years is a long time away but, once you get back into the swing of things I know it will be alright. If you give me some time I can make a video.

I would eventually like to work in the ICU after graduation, but I sometimes worry about what it'll be like since I myself am an introvert, so thank you for addressing this topic!

I’m not shy but I am mostly an introvert and doing clinical care wears me out. And care has changed in my new job so instead of getting to mentally zone out for part of the time (while assistants work) I have to remain focused on the patients from start to end of visit and from start to end of day. It makes me hate my job. I just want to do the work and go home. Add to that the hyper-vigilance of always knowing some patient or another is going to arbitrarily complain because I said “hi” instead of “hello” (or something equally meaningless) and I’ve spent my career wishing I’d become a librarian.

I can understand your frustration with that. Healthcare has changed a bunch over the past few years which makes it much different than before. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I wonder if you could recommend (to a manager or higher) a prayer corner (or some type of office space to use for relaxation). I worked on units that have these and it's nice to have a relaxing space so you may be able to break away for 10-15 mins or so.

@@MommaNurse Hi. That would be amazing. Unfortunately with half hour appointments, the only respite I get is lunch or cancellations. Just need to keep looking around for a non-clinical or at least non-patient-facing job and hope to move on eventually. But I’ve been trying since 2013 to change careers. It gets harder as you get older. You’re disregarded in favor of less expensive (less experienced) 20’s.

I’m 28 years old man I want to do nursing, but I hate to say it, but my confidence is lower I try to change but I’m always unsuccessful on fixing who I’m now at 28 I don’t even think about it no more. I’m nervous about coworker more than caring for patients base on what I heard the Bs that happens between coworkers

Don't worry about anyone else, no matter what you do in life people will have something to say. Fulfill your dreams and become a nurse. The job is so rewarding. I wish you luck and courage in whatever you choose.

Same energy, same mentality. Ask questions when needed. I thankfully got along with my Preceptor so that made it easier. Just remember you are only trained for a short time, you can make it through.
