    Very interesting take. "Pushing the bottom hand down with the top hand" is a mental cue that just makes sense.

    I always thought I was lifting some of my weight (so taking a bit of weight OFF the boat) by pushing down. Johnny Puakea says "Use your weight ". That is, lifting your weight translates into power if you are doing it after the catch. I do know to try to get the paddle into the water before the power. The timing is a fraction of a second though. I think the lunging that happens when everyone reaches is suspect in making a push downward on the boat.

    Very interesting- downward pressure to lock out elbow IOT fully utilize entire range of motion of the lower arm. If i focus on pushing down to push water, my lower arms stays a little bent…
