  • In this video i go over the procedure for replacing the fuel filter and cleaning the electric fuel pump strainer on a 2012 international work star with a maxxforce engine. I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory.

    Hey Jason I have a 2012 international maxxforce dt and when I turn the key on and the pump is running It reads 75 psi but as soon as the pump cuts off the fuel drain back to the tank and the pressure drops to 0. Is it the pressure regulator spring? Also I found metal pieces a the bottom of the fuel pump canister. Thanks

    Hi Jason, thanks for these videos. I've got a 2013 DT and everything looks the same as yours here. I followed this procedure completely and I cycled the ignition and let the pump motor run, but it only cranks and won't start. I'm getting some thick gray exhaust as it cranks and the filter housing is not filling up with fuel. The truck started and ran fine before I changed the filter. Any tips?

      I would check the orings and make sure they are not damaged. Also make sure the fuel pump is seated all the way, and the filter cap is seated all the way too. It takes about 4-5 key cycles to get it primed it will pump for about 30 seconds each time and you need to turn the key off for like 5 seconds between cycles. You should be able to hear fuel running back into the fuel tank when you take the cap off when it’s primed.

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic There's a good chance that's it, one of the o rings has a pretty good crack in it. I'm having a heck of a time finding R32 o rings, is there an equivalent size? Only two rings came in my filter kit, the one of the fuel filter housing and one that doesn't seem to fit anywhere.

    How many gallons need to be in the tank for the priming? I'm having issues getting the truck to start because I ran it low on fuel. Now I'm dead in the water...

      I would say 5-10 gallons should be enough. I don’t know an exact amount I’ve never really run it down that low.

    Hey Jason, how do you find part numbers for these engines? I don't have the IC software and I service the easy stuff on our school buses.

      I usually call the dealer for them and I save the numbers that I can cross reference with other parts places if it’s a common part I’ll need again.

    I have the same fuel pump and it is leaking around the top. I know I need the O ring, and you said it comes with the filter, but also the text said that the strainer o ring does not. Just want to make sure that the top o-ring for the pump is the one that is included with the NAPA filter.

      The oring that comes with the NAPA filter is the one for the large cap that goes over the filter. I believe you need to get the strainer from the dealer and I can’t remember what o rings come with it. I think it might only come with the oring on the strainer. I have a spare strainer kit at work but I won’t be able to check until Tuesday.

    I have the same truck with law fuel pressure, I replaced fuel regulator and mechanic told me to replace fuel pump, what do recommend before I spent to much money

      I’ve heard some fuel filters can cause low fuel pressure I would try a factory one or a known good brand first and make sure the strainer is clean before I got a new fuel pump. If you can, verify the pressure with a mechanical gauge to rule out the pressure sensor is bad. Also check the tank vent is not restricted.

      I’m sorry but there isn’t much I can do for you. You really need a scan tool to diagnose these engines. You want to check your desired manifold oil pressure with the actual and make sure they are close. You want to check your turbo boost pressure and make sure you are building pressure and the fuel pressure should be about 70psi. Check for codes you can do this without a scan tool by turning on the key and using the steering wheel buttons and holding the left one up and the right one down and that should let you cycle through the codes on the dash with either the steering wheel buttons or the trip reset button on the dash. I don’t exactly remember. If It’s not the left one up and right one down then it’s the other way and left one down and right one up. Check the exhaust bask pressure valve isn’t stuck closed and you need a scan tool to check the exhaust brake oil pressure if it’s above 20psi it can cause the valves to not close all the way. You could also be having a problem with the throttle pedal which you can see with a scan tool and might have a code for it. I don’t have a code list but a international dealer might give you the definition if you cave any but first thing I would do is check for codes. These suggestions are for the maxxforce dt. I haven’t worked on any of the other engines from them.

    I got a new one install and now when I accelerate it cuts off please advise what to do? I was told I have to ride 50 miles to get the air out

      Did it do this before you changed it? I’ve never had it cut off after a filter change. I cycle the key about 5 times to bleed the air out. It has an electric pump so it should self bleed. I know along time ago some aftermarket filters wouldn’t flow enough fuel through them and were causing problems, I don’t know if they were corrected or not.

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic before it wouldn't even crank at all. But now it cracks not reading any codes. When you say cycle the key 5 times can you break that down to me. Im a new owner operator with a box truck

      After I changed the filter I would turn the key to the on position without starting it until the pump stopped pumping and then off for a few seconds then on again to get the pump to push the air out. If you turn the key on then open the fuel cap you should be able to hear fuel running back into the tank

      I believe you should have 70 psi of fuel pressure to the engine.

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic okay so you dont think it couls possibly be the throttle response sensor since I cant acelerate over 5 mphs and over 15 RPMs even though it didnt throw a code

      If the orings are not torn or nicked I would make sure you have the correct size orings

    Would this cause a “check engine’ light to come on?

      It can have a check engine light for low fuel pressure come on. If the filter is clogged or some filters were causing low fuel pressure codes when the system first came out.

      It can either be shavings from the manufacturing process. Or it is from the fuel pump.

      Did you cycle the key a few times to prime the system before you tried to start it? You should be able to hear the fuel running back into the tank when it’s primed. The pump will shut of after running for a bit and you need to turn the key off for like 10 seconds between cycles.
