Been using straws for years to great effect. I also use a golf ball as a file handle. And i have been using a old red purse to keep all my chainsaw accoutrement together. I only use bright red purses as they show up well no matter what the season.
I learned today how quickly you can dull a sharpener, i would have thought it would have taken more time/usage in doing it incorrectly to do that amount of damage to the cutters. What i also leaned is the perceived quality of the Stihl & Oregon sharpening tools, we just assume a great brand would have some of the best quality however that isn’t always the case. Some like myself always research the consumables online for quality but many just trust in the name, wonder what the response from those 2 companies would be to help explain the visual disparity in their products. Thanks Steve once again, i learned something valuable. Cheers.
Can't stress this enough. I bought a small file card and keep it in my chainsaw bag. File gets cleaned before it gets used. Chains are way sharper now.
Dear Steve, thanks for sharing, appreciated. Love you're sharing over the years and all the great content. I wouldn't mind trying out a Bahco file but the vid didn't show it sharpening well but failing. I would love to see how it does when used properly. Cheers sincerely d
Great video, Steve. To me, what makes a video great is learning something that I have not seen demonstrated on another video. In newscast lingo, "You saw it first right here!"
I just watched your video on how to adjust the tension on a riding mower belt. I’m happy to see you’re still doing videos. Thanks man. Your video was a big help.
Hi Steve, Another good video. Thanks for telling me how to properly sharpen my chain. Very few people know how to sharpen knifes, cutters, lawn mower blades...It seems to be a lost art. Sharpening an axe for example. I am sure a lot of men really don't know how. Have you ever heard of a lawn mower blade coming loose on the new Toro Personal Pace mower (new 2023) that has a Briggs & Strattton 190cc vortex engine ? Please send my regards to April. Take care. Roland
I have been using an EzzDoo. Works very well, but in addition to ordering the machine you have to order the correct size bits from a second company. Be sure to order the correct size for your chain size.
Thank you, Steve. Your revelations are certainly astounding, But I'm thinking the uses for this "must-have" tool could potentially exceed all expectations.... I love the portability portability with a cell phone, tablet or computer, this gizmo offers incredulous possibilities.... The time has arrived, for all Digital Microscope Pioneer Users to step forward. But don't forget, we learned all this, from Steve's Small Engine Saloon.
Thank you, Steve, for sharing that information and visual aid in teaching. And yes, I believe you're pronouncing "Bahco" correctly. That's how I've always heard it said.
SteveO the professor! Tools of the trade😂. You are training us students ine video at a time! Hopefully you and April have a fantastic 4th of July and weekend ahead! Cheers brother 🍻🥂🎇🧨🎆
I have a brand new Oregon file set and a digital microscope. Now I *MUST* take a close look at them!! Thanks, Steve! You always provide valuable, thought - provoking information!! 👍
Hey love the channel! I have a tecumseh push mover that starts and runs fine but after you shut down will not start again until unit cools down. Ignition coil possibly?
Great job as usual. I would be interested to see you do a before and after microscope view of the Bahco file used CORRECTLY to see how sharp the file edges look compared to the incorrect usage. (I want you to do it because I'm not planning to buy a microscope, although it is tempting.) - Cheers, Greg
@1:07 I was here to learn about files, got health science lesson included. Thanks. @6:00 you answered my immediate next question. NO clue it would wreck a file that quickly. I've lived thinking file metal was one of the harder steels. But I guess those fine edges can be trashed like hitting a rock with your chain.
Steve, I really like this video and I need a little bit more information if you can give it to me. I think I want to buy some of those Bahco files but I’m not sure which one to buy for my new Stihl ms180cbe chainsaw.
Hmm ... I wonder if the Swiss file I bought recently is any good. I have a few of those short, battery operated 'pruners' and struggled to find the recommended 3mm (just less than 1/8") file. Found a round diamond file and a 1/8" ... still trying to get it right. Some of those dried out citrus trees (very hard wood) seemed to destroy the blades. Maybe I need to 'go geek' and buy the microscope!
Would you please look at the file on the Shhhtihl 2-in-1 sharpener? The reason I ask is those things have worked great for me and I have to wonder how they can be so effective?
You are so Right on that Steve. Thumbs up to you for Explaining and Showing even what a New FILE looks like. I use my Files 2 or 3 times and that is it. I have had Brand New Stihl Files and toss them sometimes 1time. You Would think Name Brand is good, but that's not always true my Friend. Thanks again for the great information my Friend..Ron From the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY.
I use only Swedish ,German,Japan or American made files ,taps, drills. No Chinesium metal garbage. A" bastard File" (diamond patern) file can cut both directions. Excellent channel 👍
If he were going to be Scientist Steve, he would have to compare the file after filing incorrectly to after filing correctly, rather than to not filing at all. Still a good video though.
Hi Steve I have an electric sharpener seems to work pretty good just curious as to your opinion of them because they only seem to put the edge on the top part of the tooth Also when do you need to take the rackers down
Thank you now you got me thinking I want to buy a Microscope just to look at random things I have haha. Just like them infrared cameras people keep showing off on UA-cam I want one but just can't justify paying for one yet. At least them USB microscopes are cheap
Could you do a miff buster with your microscope please Steve . Don't know if it is true but the old boys say if you rub a bit of chalk on the file first the metal filings won't clog your file
That was amazing, something most of us probably knew like in the back of our mind, BUT NEVER do , any time I have a problem with my equipment, I come right here, ! , to your chanel 😁
Yup... ^THIS^ -Is a more durable but less sharp initially file a better bet than a super sharp one that's effectively a single-use/ disposable item, like I find with good quality brand-name razor blades vs cheap alternatives?

Bahco is a subsidiary of Snapon tools
Thanks once again for the transfer of your vast knowledge to us Saloon subs.

I wonder if the Stihl file would damage so easily.
It's also important to keep your files clean of filings
Can't stress this enough. I bought a small file card and keep it in my chainsaw bag. File gets cleaned before it gets used. Chains are way sharper now.
And what's the best way to do that? Brass brush?
@@k.d.8924 Google 'file card'
@@k.d.8924Generally, file cards are steel brushes with unique individually shaped,
ALSO DIRECTIONAL bristles.
@@k.d.8924File card. It’s a “ brush” with short wires made to clean files.

Great idea to look at the chain saw files under a microscope Steve
Great video, Steve. To me, what makes a video great is learning something that I have not seen demonstrated on another video. In newscast lingo, "You saw it first right here!"
Cool, thanks
I'm curious as to durability of the Bahco as compared to the other two
Good idea with the straw. I never thought to store file in anything if they didn’t come in a storage container. Thank you!
You're Welcome...
I just watched your video on how to adjust the tension on a riding mower belt. I’m happy to see you’re still doing videos. Thanks man. Your video was a big help.
Great video Steve. The straw idea is brilliant! 👍

Big thumbs up 👍 thanks Steve !! I'm always learning something
Glad to hear it
Very interesting! Learn something new every day! What is your opinion about using those grinding wheels you put on a dremel to the chain.
I have been using an EzzDoo. Works very well, but in addition to ordering the machine you have to order the correct size bits from a second company. Be sure to order the correct size for your chain size.
Absolutely the best video I've seen in years!! Thank you Thank you Thank you !!!😊
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
great segment Steve. I always use Stihl files too. Maybe not anymore....lol. never knew they could get messed up so easily. thanks for sharing.
Glad to help

Professor Proton!
Who knew!
Steve’s Small Engine University
Great job Pal!
Interesting AND fun!
Right on Bob Newhart!
What are the best brand of files?
Hey Steve, can you make a video on how to put on the chainsaw trigger and linkages on a 1983 Poulan 3400 xp pro. Or any older saw
You should take a look at a brand spanking new ball bearing, not as smooth as you would think?
You are so Right on that Steve. Thumbs up to you for Explaining and Showing even what a New FILE looks like. I use my Files 2 or 3 times and that is it. I have had Brand New Stihl Files and toss them sometimes 1time. You Would think Name Brand is good, but that's not always true my Friend. Gonna have to change your channel from Steve Small Engine Saloon to Scientist Steve.
If he were going to be Scientist Steve, he would have to compare the file after filing incorrectly to after filing correctly, rather than to not filing at all. Still a good video though.
Another excellent video Steve! Happy 4th of July to you & your family! And please don't blow anything up tonight! 😂😂💥💥
Would be pretty cool to see what the pferd regular and fine files look like. Facinating images Steve.
Interesting! I wonder if the Stihl and Oregon files are designed that way so they can take that abuse from the average user?
Hi Steve I have an electric sharpener seems to work pretty good just curious as to your opinion of them because they only seem to put the edge on the top part of the tooth
Also when do you need to take the rackers down
Amazing damage in only seconds!
Thank you now you got me thinking I want to buy a Microscope just to look at random things I have haha. Just like them infrared cameras people keep showing off on UA-cam I want one but just can't justify paying for one yet. At least them USB microscopes are cheap
Right on
Did the Bacco file actually sharpen better than the other two?
Great explanation.
Glad you think so!
The file you drug backwards looks like the brand new Stihl and Oregon files. Wow
Agreed!
Very interesting and informative. Sux that I didn't see this for almost 2 weeks 😡
Could you do a miff buster with your microscope please Steve . Don't know if it is true but the old boys say if you rub a bit of chalk on the file first the metal filings won't clog your file
As alway great information will use straw trick hang mine on peg board at home😊😊😊😊
Great 👍
I'm gonna have to FILE this video under "good info"! Steve is a sharp guy 😂
Right on
I thought you were going to use the straw to "sip" your beer. 😅 Got my hand whacked in shop class for dragging a file. Haven't done it since.
valorb are good files
That was amazing, something most of us probably knew like in the back of our mind, BUT NEVER do , any time I have a problem with my equipment, I come right here, ! , to your chanel 😁
Love that!
Is this like knife blades…where too fine an edge won’t last?
Yup... ^THIS^
