    For most pianos this is a great solution for getting it to look great. as a DIY project.. It still looks great, The bench came out wonderful . You gave so many so much encouragement .In most instances what you did was great ! That piano was quarter sawn oak.You did save that piano and are encouraging others to rescue old pianos so I did click the "like" tab.

    For absolutely everyone saying she ruined the piano by painting it, it’s ok. She wants it that way and that’s totally fine. It matches her house and in my opinion its more important that she likes it than to keep it antique.

      Also the piano as an instrument is destroyed, it will literally never be able to play correctly ever again because it cannot breath with all that paint on top. Such a shame. I would have dreamed to play on a piano like that growing up rather than a cheap keyboard.

      All pianos are painted and finished with “something,” the most common today being hard polyester. As long as you don’t get paint on any of the sound-producing or amplifying parts, it’s not going to affect the sound at all. The sound is affected by the strings, and the soundboard, that’s about it.
      The soundboard IS visible from the outside; it’s the deepest piece of wood you’ll see and it has diagonal ribs on it, going across the piano. Don’t touch that one, unless it needs repair.

    The piano looks quite nice, I would be careful about calling it a piano restoration though. It has been refinished and this video shows how it was refinished, but it was not restored. There is so much more involved in a piano restoration. Only a piano technician with proper experience and tools can truly restore a piano. That being said the upholstery and fresh paint do make the piano look nice.

    • @MamaBearx10
      @MamaBearx10 7 років тому +3

      In the video about the piano's purpose, they show that the piano was tuned, so there's that...

    • @ChuppsPianos
      @ChuppsPianos 7 років тому +6

      Unfortunately, piano tuning has become confused with restoration/rebuilding over the years. Tuning is the act of adjusting the string tension to bring the sound 'into tune.' It is important to note that tuning a piano does not repair or restore any mechanical or structural issues the instrument may have.
      One example is to compare it a guitar. If the neck of a guitar is snapped, one wouldn't simply tune it, they would seek out a technician/restorer to complete the needed repair and restoration work. The term ‘tuning’ seems to have become a catch-all definition for work done on a piano. It often gets confused with work that would fall under restoration, basic maintenance, or repairs.
      In some ways, it is understandable that there can be confusion over the difference. Piano technology is no longer as common as it once was, and many entry level beginners go with digital keyboards/pianos in place of acoustic instruments. Also, the industry has done a varying job over the years of providing information to the general public on the subject of piano technology.

      It took me few months of intermittent hard work to clean/restore interior and exterior of a 100 years old grand upright. Its exterior was worse than this piano. I took all parts out and worked separately. Just cleaned the action and filed hammers. I used lot of baking soda and shellac to get rid of odor. My tuner thought someone had replaced all tuning pins but they were just cleaned properly. This was my first acoustic piano project and I learned quite a lot about pianos. Now I am enjoying its beautiful sound and look.

    With all due respect:
    There is so much ignorance going on in this video that something must be said.
    I cannot stand by, witnessing someone paint a beautiful, vintage quarter-sawn oak headboard or nightstand -let alone a PIANO and say nothing.
    This is a TOTAL CRIME against all that is virtuous, lovely or of good report or praiseworthy.
    The sad part is this individual thinks they know what they are doing and actually believes they are enhancing the piano. This is an act if total ignorance.
    Fortunately, most of this damage can be reversed. The sad part is that most of the piano’s beauty is now hidden, reducing its chances of being rescued and truly restored.
    I can only hope to someday rescue and re-restore this piano to its paradisiacal glory.

Not to mention that absolutely no piano restoration was done to the internal mechanism. It’s a shame that so many beautiful antique instruments are tossed aside. Putting housepaint over a quality wood grain is a good way to perpetuate this problem. This looks like graffiti.

    EI-YI-YI-YI-YIIIIIIII......BEFORE you even THINK of refinishing a piano you MUST have a piano technician tell you if it can still be a musical instrument. This video implies that all you have to do is refinish the outside. Just like people, IT"S WHAT'S INSIDE THAT COUNTS. Particularly on a piano this age. Everything is OVER 100 years old. Are the tuning pins tight?- or it won't stay in tune. $1000 or more to replace. Are the bridges cracked? - the sound may buzz - again over $1000 to replace. Are the hammers and the rest of the over 3,000 parts of the action still operable? If not, it's just a piece of junk that looks like a piano. How many times have I been invited to tune a piano after someone bought something like this and I had the unpleasant task of telling them it will cost $100's or even $1,000's to make it a viable piano. I remember one couple that paid $50 at an auction. What a deal, they thought. I went to tune it and it didn't even have 2/3's of the hammers still in the piano - never mind that the action parts were completely worn out. They had also paid $200 to get it home. And they certainly didn't have the money to replace all those hammers.
    OH - and by the way - the way she painted it by not taking it totally apart, she painted it so that a piano tuner couldn't even get inside it to tune it. And I guarantee once it is painted your chance of ever selling it is close to ZERO. This is a musical instrument, folks, not just a piece of folk art furniture, unless that's what you want!! I'll guarantee, the next home for this won't be a home, it will be a huge fantastic fire or the land fill.

    I was shocked to see her use a kichen knife to fill. Has this lady ever had any formal training. Shameful! !
    I was hoping to see a professional restoration.

    Absolute agony to watch the filling process , no wonder she didn't show the sanding . If you do this get the correct spatula , do it cleanly , and allow two fills , sand in between if needs be . Think twice before painting beautiful wood too .

    Jesus Christ was not mentioned in this video. It should not be posted by a church holding His name.
