To have a cup of coffee with Smith and talk about the world would be so great.

28:50 I don’t think the word “coexist” was the right word for that… maybe I misunderstood or Smith misspoke, or there is a difference in what is learned

It sounded like Smith was trying to be political. He kind of pauses before the section. I'd assume there were scare quotes around coexist.

I'm not going to stop listening Smith. I've always enjoyed Hat Films content ever since i found you guys a decade ago. Love the creative directions you guys have been experimenting with over the years. The flight simulator stream was genius and i would definitely click on another tier listing video if you guys made another one on anything really!

I think the shareholders argument is definitely a good line of reasoning to go down in terms of what has really fucked over the US so much. It's not specifically the market or shareholders in general, but this idea that our entire lives are kind of based on market performance.
I've given up any hope of ever seeing retirement age and am probably going to go a "live fast, die young" thing in the next few months because I wasn't able to start investing soon enough and so I would have to live on peanuts until I was 60 to even be able to begin hoping to afford to not work for the rest of my life. Though, it's not just that since there are health issues (huzzah, America!) on top of it. It used to be, pensions were the norm. The companies would foot the bill and were required to keep their pensions solvent and employees were incentivized to do better because they would profit. But, then retirement funding switched over to 401ks that were pegged to more general market performance. We saw this come up big in the 2008 recession. "We can't afford to let these businesses fail! Think about grandma's retirement!"
So, I understand the pressure that the CEOs feel that shareholder performance is a very important thing, but even then they're largely the ones that made this situation. It really doesn't matter which direction you go: they made their beds, and now they don't want to lie in them.

28:40 had to stop what I was doing to comment on this. I was originally going to comment, once I listened to the whole thing, about how Smith is prone to dogwhistle western chauvinism. Saying that 'western states came to Africa and tried to coexist with them and need to have walls up to keep them [Africans] out' takes the cake in terms of outright expressing his western chauvinism.
Going on to say that 'we're going to become like that' is mind boggling, but given that he said "coexist", I assume he isn't aware of what the west ACTUALLY did in Africa (It wasn't 'just wanting to coexist, bro') and what it continues to do (Colonialism --> present, Africa has been exploited by the west to the highest degree, and continues so through direct and indirect means). It's not just this that shows his chauvinism either, as it comes out every time he brings up Russia. Not to mention that he hasn't said a single word about Israel.
    It's beyond frustrating
    Sorry for the text wall.

Poorly framed/worded at the VERY least. It came across (as westerners often do) like Africa can’t get its shit together after all this time, and civilized westerners had to protect themselves from the savages. The English are guilty of whitewashing raping and pillaging as a noble service. Woof.

Right off the bat, with the hurricane. Think of them like giant thermal engines on the surface of Earth. They spin with an immense amount of energy, many thousands of times greater then a nuclear bomb over their lifetime. It's equivalent to saying can you stop lighting by firing a taser at it.

Ross can always pull off a suit, but the other two just look uncomfortable in it. Maybe it's just the grey-brown colour.
Anyway, in other news; we're all going to die.

Trott is the only one with any sense here in all honesty 😂. Some real bad takes coming through my left ear rn. Wish these podcasts could be less political and more lighthearted so that I can enjoy them again.
