Laboratorium Pieśni - Song Laboratory (world/ethno/spiritual/mystic folk music) is a female group of singers from Poland, created in 2013. Using traditional, polyphonic singing they perform songs from all over the world, mainly: Ukraine, Balkans, Belarus, Georgia, Scandinavia, Poland and many other places. They sing a capella as well as with shaman drums and other ethnic instruments (shruti box, kalimba, flute, gong, zaphir and koshi chimes, singing bowls, rattles etc.), creating a new space in a traditional song, adding voice improvisations, inspired by sounds of nature, often intuitive, wild and feminine.

It is called a white voice, a way of singing that can be found in the traditional music of all Slavic countries. It varies from country to country. I come from Poland and I can see a clear difference between Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Belarusian and Balkan songs.
Thank you for explaining this I’ve been in love with this song for years and never knew much about it. It feels so calming and deep like I feel connected on some sort of spiritual level and I’m not even remotely religious or anything. I love learning about different cultures and traditions.

Well, Witcher is a Polish creation and they used Polish folk musicians for the music score

Obsessed with this song. I could listen to it over and over and ovvver again.
The way he described their vocal style made it click in my head that it's basically a vocal version of the bagpipes or a hurdy gurdy with the constant droning in the background.
So very folk Belarusian!
They call it "white voice" in the slavic countries, not a lot of info about it online but it's common to older folk music from the region. Speakers of many Slavic languages, Polish included, usually keep their jaws tighter/more closed when speaking, it's part of the pronunciation, so I imagine that contributed to the style. You can see they don't drop their jaws down as much as most classic western singers, though they open wide horizontally like smiling--one girl does open her mouth more and I feel like I can hear which voice is hers over the others actually.
The style is similar (though not identical) to American Shape Note/Sacred Harp singing, which is essentially white singing with a southern accent. They open their mouths more (that drawl coming out) but the sound resonates similarly. It's associated with religous revivals in the southeast, so I imagine one reason the style developed was that the sound really carries for blocks when a whole church is singing it ( excellent example here:ua-cam.com/video/XIkPyUecsnI/v-deo.html and here: ua-cam.com/video/STtz7ZhEC6U/v-deo.html ). Accually the term is wrong and was created with incompetence. Recent conclusion of ethnomusicologists is that there is not Such a thing as the white voice
@@piotrrud6986 yes there is but it dosent mean white it means big or loud. The reason is Belo (white) in early slavic history meant big as well as white. In serbia for example we say white world when we want to say huge world or literaly the capital is called Beograd or big citty :)
Wow, this is an unusual one to react to, but I am so grateful to you for doing it. Polish traditional music is beautiful and reminds me somewhat of my own, since I am Lithuanian and we (Lithuania andPoland) were one country for a good amount of time in the past. Loved the song and your reaction!

Their harmonies remind me of The Trio Bulkarka, a Bulgarian vocal group who Kate Bush used on some albums to sing backup vocals, and who were also an inspiration to guitarist Jeff Beck.

I LOVE this song! I've listened to it enough that I can sing along with them. And I don't even know that language! You should check out Eivør Pálsdóttir - Trøllabundin. She sings that song a bit different at every live show. My favorite if the video of her standing in front of the Kópakonan statue!

Its also a kind of trance song. From prechristian times, when singing and drumming was not only fun but also a sacred ritual.

Long time ago I recommended you amazing japanese artist Kokia. She has classical and operatic music education, but only in few songs she singing more operatic. With operatic singing, can you react her song "Il Mare Dei Suoni" live version from History concert tour 2012? This singing technique (also called "white voice" - having nothing to do with anyone's skin tone) is characteristic for the simple people of the farmlands and - as its sound is really far-reaching and rather loud (even though the ladies above didn't master it even half as well as actual country folk singers) - was developed primarily to be used as a way of calling one another across large distances when in the fields doing actual work. Also, the lyrics of the songs aren't usually greatly philosophical, they usually revolve around nature, man on woman business etc.

They’re a norwegian band and have definitely been one of the pioneers in black metal, but have become more and more symphonic over the years. Love them.

As a Polish person I would like to apologize for the cultural appropriation of the absolutely NOT Slavic decorative elements and items used in this music video, which were used solely because the choir members apparently thought they looked cool or couldn't tell them apart from those that actually ARE.
