  • When Shula Cohen was arrested for espionage in 1961, Beirut society was shocked.
How could such an elegant, classy high society woman turn out to be an Israeli spy?
Shulami 'Shula' Cohen was born of Jewish parents in Argentina and grew up in Israel. At 16, she was married off to a wealthy Lebanese Jewish businessman, Josef Kishik, and moved to Beirut.
It's not entirely clear how Cohen, codenamed 'The Pearl' became a spy for the Jewish Agency and then for the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, when it was formed in December 1949.
One theory is she'd always wanted to be involved in the building of Israel. Another is that she was recruited in Jerusalem and her marriage to Kishik was a "front".
Either way, Cohen carved out a prominent place in the higher echelons of Beirut society and hosted salons where she entertained and cultivated politicians, influential businessmen and senior army officers.
She used these parties, her cafes, casinos and her husband's Beirut shop to make contacts who'd enable her to provide intelligence to Israel and build a spy network.
Cohen was part of a huge operation called "Aliya Bet" to bring Jews from Arab countries through Lebanon into Palestine. Arabs were opposed to the settlement of Jews in pre-1948 Palestine so their transit had to be secret. Jewish emigration from Arab countries to Israel remained highly contentious post-1948 and so this smuggling continued for many years.
Cohen's trial began on October 27, 1961 and received huge media attention. But, interestingly, nothing came out during the trial about the many Lebanese and other Arab politicians who had been caught in her clandestine web.
On July 25, 1962 Cohen was sentenced to death. But due to international pressure, including from Israel, her sentence was commuted to 20 years.
Cohen only served six years of her sentence imprisoned in Beirut.
Israel took a large number of Arab prisoners during the second Arab-Israeli war in 1967 - and Cohen, among others, was exchanged for a number of Syrian, Lebanese and Egyptian soldiers in the summer of 1967.
Shula Cohen died in Jerusalem on May 21, 2017, aged 100. Also in 2017, the Lebanese authorities claimed to have made several arrests in connection with the passing of information to Mossad. Shula Cohen has passed away but her legacy lives on.

@Observer Jr. You can't even speak proper English. They have great documentaries and reporters. Yes, they are a Qatari state-owned media outlet and will occasionally espouse government-approved talking points, however, you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater. They have talented reporters and have great reports on the world. Stop espousing right-wing talking points that you love to regurgitate.

@@iafigueroa91 So, when did the Islam world and the sponsored networks became beacon of truth?
The only reason the world is still surviving is because of the inept Arab world. Once Arab world, becomes self-sufficient and intelligent enough, they will parade all over the world (which already they are doing with money) and massacre how their erstwhile leader Muhammad did.
Islam is the only major active religion where you are condemned to death, if you try to leave Islam. Islam is like a irreversible chemical reaction, it cannot change with times nor it can modify any parts of it's tradition to suit modern secular thinking.
The greatest irony of it all is the current nexus between the two extremist ideologies one that of Islam and the other is left/communist one. This current nexus is beneficial to both to penetrate their ideologies deep into the heartlands of every possible nation on the earth. And, once they eliminate other parties/ideologies in the respective countries, these two groups would annihilate each other as their ideologies are mutually confrontational to each other. Currently, they are in the honeymoon period where each group is tying to make maximum profit of each other by their nexus. That is the reason you don't see the hypocrite leftist groups ever raising their wrath on Islam which is one of the most intolerant and brutal religions ever to come to light. Why Islam is different to other religions is because Islam is NOT flexible, it still believes in the non-sense written centuries back, whereas other religions however crude or primitive they may be have tried to accommodate or change to the modern times. Arab world is a dangerous threat to Israel, and the only way Israel can survive is to be on the offensive.
We are failing to follow the middle path as taught by Buddha, extreme ideology of any kind is going to give pain and suffering to the world. Live in a reasonable way, where critical thinking, inclusivity and tolerance are given value instead of falling trap to my religion or my ideology is the true ideology. Israel also needs to be humane to the cause of Palestine and be reasonable with them, else no one is going to live a satisfactory life.

@30:14 'We started spying on her through remote listening devices on the floor, wall, or ceiling, *linked to satellites* .' Really? Linked to satellites? In '61, eh? (She was arrested on 9 Aug 1961, and had been under investigation for two months prior to that date.) Listening devices with dishes transmitting data via communications satellites to a base station. Quite a remarkable achievement, Lebanon. That was just after the US launched its first passive relay satellite, about a year before the US launched its first active-relay communication satellite, and a decade before Canada, which is credited as being third to launch a communications satellite.
How have we not heard of Lebanon's space achievements until now?

She was an incredible woman who saved many lives. She lived to a remarkable age.
What is most interesting is that information gathered by intelligence services in Israel and the activities of the IDF are for defence or protection vs offence and harm.
It is so wonderful to see Arab nations forming mutually beneficial relationships with Israel.

They are skipping over so much in this documentary... talking about how she was known as agent 'pearl' and all the rest of it. This woman was so brutally tortured after her arrest in Lebanon that -many years later- she would not even refer to some of it. She only agreed to speak about tortures like not having finger or toe nails anymore because they were all ripped off, and being whipped and electrocuted while hanging upside down. She would not speak of the numerous sexual perversions that were visited upon her after her arrest. Don't glamorize female spies...

Please remember that any media information that you watch, read or hear has been filtered through from a particular viewpoint. One question to ask would be to find out who owns the source of the information and what is their political view about anything, in this case, Israel. So who owns the Al Jazeera network and what is his/er political views towards Israel? Unfortunately, as I have discovered, a lot of news that we receive has been told from a biased viewpoint. Sadly, I have seen a lot of anti-Israeli, even what I consider to be anti-Semitic rhetoric and information. From the Al Jazeera channel.
The fact is that no news anywhere has no bias in it, because the full story from all viewpoints are never taken into account, and we never hear about them unless we travel to the affected areas or have dealings in the form of personal encounters and experiences with people from those areas or groups ourselves.
