That Corby to Oakham service used to continue to Derby via the north side of the triangle at Syston before the Covid pandemic (another bit of rare track which is now only used by two early morning Nottingham to Norwich EMR services)
Brilliant video Nick, there was a Meridian diagram on the Leicester to Lincoln service from 2018 to 2020 so meridians have stopped at Syston Sileby and Barrow upon soar. I don't like it when it get's dark early in the winter months lol. I've done the route this once a day service does on engineering works weekends where Market Harborough was shut.
Must be a good idea to redo this in the summer as well - get the view off the top of the Harringworth Viaduct (the 82 arch leviathan that is the longest railway viaduct over a river valley in the country) on the way!
Worked on Corby old platform and the operational one during the redoubling phase of the K2C project and on the BSC branch back in 2018, it was a long walk from Corby to Manton as I recall… I just did a survey at Mountsorrel during the floods… did a video down at Sileby Marina … yep, working midlands is a real privilege… The canopy’s we worked on at Kettering, look beautiful in your video btw, but Market Harborough…. Well, that’s my station.😉
With Corby that only has 1 platform. Maybe there could be a 2nd platform to be built with a siding for Class 360s to use as a turn back coming from London St. Pancras. And with plans to electrify the Midland Main Line to Leicester and East Midlands Parkway and new Class 810 Bi-mode trains to start service sometime later this year.
Good job, I knew you were mentioning the Kettering - Corby - Melton Mowbray train as soon as I saw the title because they all otherwise stop at Corby! Incidentally Corby is the station I use for work! Shame I couldn't see you, whenever you're in Northamptonshire I don't know you're here... I would happily have a quick chat if I ever saw you on my travels!
I always thought it was strange that the trains from St Pancras terminated at Corby instead of extending to Nottingham and Derby as stopping services restoring the direct services from Luton, Bedford and Wellingborough to Nottingham that was removed in 2021
Slash Lane is apparently in the top 10 most flooded roads in the UK. Considering number 1 on that list is a tidal causeway to Mersea Island that is underwater at high tide ever day, it's quite some accomplishment. We call the fields nearby the Sea of Sileby for a reason! 😅
The next time they are running it is 19th January. The previous two Sundays, it is a replacement bus service on that part of the route operated by CrossCountry.
Rode the Line theough Corby many moons ago on a positioning run from Leicester to Stratford London. Via Corby Ketteeung Maston Vale line. WCML Primrose Hill and the NLL
East Midlands Railway are to introduce their new Class 810 Aurora sometime later this year and to transfer the Class 222 Meridian to ScotRail or storage. I like how EMR have done to the Class 360 Desiro that were with Greater Anglia before.
There isn't very much to do in Syston if you're stuck there for 40 mins. The service is useful in that it allows EMR drivers to retain the route knowledge for the diversions mentioned. I seem to recall that some of the diverted services don't go back into Leicester, using the other side of the Syston triangle.
I used to go to school in kettering, however lived in wellingborough. I remember when Meridian’s used to flow through back and forth. I once stayed at school for a project, ended up in melton mowbray. was not fun. Ah, 2015! what a long time ago!
There was a timetabled Meridian service from Leicester to Lincoln which stopped several years ago. Also, don't know how old you are but i remember when Central Trains were introducing brand new 170s and they ran them in on Leicester-Loughborough shuttles.
Im yet to ride on other emr rolling stock other than 170 2 and 3 car, living in stoke on trent that was the only emr that came through would love to ride the meridians as the only
110mph on the up, 110mph on the down at Barrow, 115mph on the up, 110mph on the down at Sileby, 120mph on the up and 110mph on the down at Syston on the fasts 🤓
As an old fart I remember when Corby was reopened to great fanfare in the 1980's under the Speller act but the euphoria soon died and it was closed again. So sometime it's once again been reopened. Imagine living on the other side of the world and knowing that and all before the internet age.
This episode reminds me,, somewhat whistfully, of Samuel Beckett's 'Footfalls' First performed in 1976 the play - significantly - only has a semblance of a plot......
TOCs have to run a London service to and from Melton Mowbray to give the people who live there (and Oakham) a direct service to and from London St Pancras, it started in the days of East Midlands Trains and has carried on since though Abellio want to stop it, luckily they haven't been allowed to. They aren't routed via Leicester as it's quicker to go via Manton and Corby.

It's a thing of beauty. Monstrosity suggests it's ugly.
@CarlTebbutt Good point, I was thinking merely in terms of scale
Thanks Nick. As another well known UA-camr once described it - Oakham the least used and the most used station in Rutland!
I'm pretty sure Geoff Marshall did it in is least used stations series?
I live in Oakham and it's very busy 😅
@@chrishatfield4424 It's the only railway station in Rutland:-)
Great in the summer or on the weekend diverts. Chip shop near the station at Melton if ye want food. Great route.

I remember a few years ago, the train left Corby in the morning, you could have a few hours in Oakham before it headed back to Corby.
Yes so do I
only a matter of time they will stop the evening one, saying but nobody using it.
You two work so well together, presenting styles work well, more calbs please. Happy new year to you and fellow subscribers.

Nick is back again with a Banger video!
Happy New Year Nick, hope your throat is better soon!
Can't wait to see the newly refurbished 360's!
Nice Video Nick!
I always thought it was strange that the trains from St Pancras terminated at Corby instead of extending to Nottingham and Derby as stopping services restoring the direct services from Luton, Bedford and Wellingborough to Nottingham that was removed in 2021
because the trains from london are electric ,they cannot go any further than corby, the one train the lads were on is diesel.
@@steve3231 Solution: electrify it further
@@Elibuwu not possible as between corby and oakham there is a long tunnel and then the harringworth viaduct, not going to happen .
Thank you for sharing Nick
Oakham signal box provided the prototype for the Airfix Model

This is a classic fact that I regret not retaining for the video 😆
Correct and I'm sure Thomas the tank engine original kids show from the 80's
Hi Nick Happy New Year and I really enjoyed that video and what a cool train journey.
Slash Lane is apparently in the top 10 most flooded roads in the UK. Considering number 1 on that list is a tidal causeway to Mersea Island that is underwater at high tide ever day, it's quite some accomplishment. We call the fields nearby the Sea of Sileby for a reason! 😅
I remember doing this on a divert, great video!
5:57 Why did he just sound like Auto Shenanigans? 😂
I live I corby nice to see to see a video onthe station
Nick. I don't know if you have spotted this. Some Sundays in Feb and Mar SWT are running trains to Reading from Salisbury.
Unless I’m mistaken, I think they do this most Sundays? It’s still a weird route not as weird as it sounds initially.
The next time they are running it is 19th January. The previous two Sundays, it is a replacement bus service on that part of the route operated by CrossCountry.

Given that barrow is an obsolete term for a castrated boar is Barrow upon Soar another way of saying pigs might fly?
Great video sir.
Wonderful Corby. Once in the Running For EuroDisney.
A very differnt form of wonder now 😊
Nice to see 170502 at Loughborough and Barrow-Upon-Soar, but it is still a funny epic video and well done on visiting every station in Rutland
When rain is forecast Slash lane gets flooded.

Meridians use to call into Corby few years ago
Great Stuff..... Nice to see you down in my corner of the empire. But Wait What!!?? they take a Intercity up that little line through Corby,
There was a timetabled Meridian service from Leicester to Lincoln which stopped several years ago.

Best video of all time
omg bro did trainspotting mayhem's advice, Visiting Every Station in Rutland!
No mention of the epic Welland viaduct although obviously not much to see in the dark.

22xs I've been on were xc 220s and 221s and I wasn't impressed
Looking on railmap the fast lines at Barrow are only 110mph. Still a lot faster than the 65mph on the slows!
1:06 Those dirty windows!
110mph on the up, 110mph on the down at Barrow, 115mph on the up, 110mph on the down at Sileby, 120mph on the up and 110mph on the down at Syston on the fasts 🤓
Loughborough, not to be confused with Loughborough Junction which is in the most unLoughborough-like place ever
Is this you doing a Geoff Marshall least used station in Rutland?

The meridian that passed you on your first trip was 222007 qnd I was on that train, been watching since the first video sucks I didn’t meet you.
You didn't mention Syston's greatest attraction - the Pukka Pies factory!
Unfortunately the loop is operated in three sections: Kettering - Melton Mowbray, Melton Mowbray - Leicester and Leicester - Kettering.
Did you get a stock of pork pies in, whilst at Melton Mowbray?
Cleethorpes mentioned!
This episode reminds me,, somewhat whistfully, of Samuel Beckett's 'Footfalls' First performed in 1976 the play - significantly - only has a semblance of a plot......
I assume they run this service to ensure drivers keep route knowledge as the Lettering to Leicester v Corby is the weekend engineering diversion route

Nats not looking so great in 2025!😂
Ayyyyy more videos
Why does this service exist? Did I miss the explanation?
Do it in the summer when it's still daylight at 8pm.
Unless they have very different trees and shrubs down there it certainly wasn't filmed recently...
