- Are floating power ships a safe solution to South Africa's electricity woes?
That's the question that is yet to be answered. In 2021 Turkish company Karpowerships won the lion's share of an emergency tender to try and ease the shortage in power supply in South Africa. The deal was meant to see three floating power stations - which use Liquefied Natural Gas to produce electricity - docking at Saldahna, Richards Bay and Coega - providing 1220MW of additional power to the grib. But the environmental licencing process failed. The Department of Environmental Affairs initially dismissed Karpowerships application after activists lodged complaints about the impact on fishing, local ecosystems and greenhouse gas emissions.
Earlier this year, Environmental Minister Barbara Creecy dismissed an appeal, but she did give the company a chance to correct various gaps and procedural defects - essentially giving Karpowerships a final chance.
Karpowerships has now launched a big to deal with the gaps which will involve additional public consultation with residents around the affected docks. To discuss, we're joined by the director of Karpowership South Africa, Mehmet Katmer.
