Here’s Why Taylor Swift And Drake Don’t Own Their Music
Вставка

- Drake, Cardi B, Taylor Swift - these artists are topping the charts. But they don’t own the rights to most of their music. That’s why Taylor Swift just rereleased 2008’s “Fearless,” her second album, which she now owns.
But not everyone is Taylor Swift. While big labels promise artists financial support and fame, what they often want in return is ownership of artists’ music and control over future music.
In this explainer, watch how artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Future are fighting against a system rooted in capitalism that wants to own them.

@Anne Day what is the point of owning a song you did not write or even sing ?
Pretty much every single artist that signs their first contact in the entertainment industry, doesn’t own their music. Artists usually only get to own their work, when they have extremely high money worth to the entertainment industry, because money worth is power. If Swift goes independent, they get nothing, which is why UMG did her current contract of Taylor owning her music, with them just being given the rights for distribution & she has the support needed to make these album releases happen, all while owning her music. The more money people make, the more negotiating power they get. Artists that struggle to make the label money, do not have negotiation power, and they’re considered expendable to labels, with the label being able to drop them or even take every single penny that they do get, to cover the label’s expenses that they spent on the artist & actually putting most artists in the negatives for earning money. They have extremely little negotiation power & they usually can’t leave the label they’re under, unless the label drops them. Labels have all the power, contracts are almost always a stealing of personality & freedom to be yourself. The culture needs to change and everyone needs to be aware of the truth. There’s so much more than just owning songs, that are wrong with the entertainment industry & every single person needs to be aware of the truth.
This is why artists with their soul still intact leave while they can.!!
Let's not forget that Taylor Swift literally help build her label Big Machine Records from an unknown label to a powerhouse country label that worth half a billion dollars!
0:13 *"FEAR Taylor Swift"* oh we do
so you mention Drake in the title but only mention him once lol
Taylor Swift is owning them all back she is a queen
Idk what the big deal is no one is forced to sign those contracts. They sign willingly then complain because they did not do their due diligence. Not all artists are that dumb tho
does anyone know why can’t taylor completely remove the old versions of her albums 1-6 on all the streaming platforms as soon as the taylor’s version is released (like fearless)?
(not so sure abt this) but I guess, it's cause her old label still has the full control over her old masters regardless if she re-records it, since the original recordings are still licensed to them (her old label). However, with the new recordings, she can then de-value those old ones, especially with the huge loyal fanbase she has.
Ask Shirley Manson how the record industry actually was, and is today.
If she felt like owning her own music was relevant then she wouldn't have signed to a label in the first place but hey I get it people can't make it on there own so a label backs them 🤷♂️
I get the basic concept. I think it’s messed up when the artist don’t get a chance to buy their masters after the record label has recouped or even made profit from the album. Or if they do sell them let the artist get first bid. The record labels want to own their masters in perpetuity.
I never tend to be this early to a video upload
Everybody wants their passive income.
Damn these naive insensitive comments really thought it was all for the money. Taylor signed a contract at 14 years old which most kids are just playing toys while she was trying to pursue her dreams.
She pulled out 1989 album from spotify and didnt mind the loss in the name of fair pay and wrote a letter to apple's music small pay for fair treatment of artists.

Michael Jackson and Sony owned the entire Beatles catalogue. News?
It’s been always this way in every form of contract! Jonathan Ive designed iPhone, but he does not have a copyright to it at all but Apple does. If you don’t like it, just do not have no contracts with agencies, try to be successful with no supports. Then you will realize you need an agency. They market your music and distribute your music, make your success happen. Don’t complain what you signed for with your own decision.
The question is would any of the people have their fame if they hadn't signed. Seems kind of like an athlete. You get paid less then you prove your worth and sign a bigger comtract. If you are a nobody and get all the fame from signing do you really have the right to complain? When you are more established you just move on from the record company. I can understand if someone wrote and performed a song that they would feel they should have more rights to the music but a few people on this list are just performers singing other peoples songs.

How about people that create beats to go with the song/ rap? How much do they get?

This movement was started by black artists. Taylor Swift made it mainstream. She isn’t paving the way, the black artists paved the way already. so this is where the "In my feelings more than drake" line came from on the song Forgot That You Existed... mmm...
I don't think any major artist really owns their music. Not even mj, prince or madonna. Prince and MJ feuded with labels for years for control of their music. Madonna went the "if you can't beat em" route and played the game.
Prince owns his master. He won that lawsuit against warner brothers in the 90's. Now I don't know what happened after he re-signed with them again but I think prince was smart enough not to give them up again
this problem is so old yet they still sign.
People keep telling new artists to be smart and get lawyers...NO! We are in 2021 in an age where you can be INDEPENDENT, especially if you’re a minority...the industry is sexist, racist and homophobic we do not need them to be successful. Independence is the key to freedom and these people struggled because they’re putting their success in the hands of other people. We don’t need to do that anymore. Capitalism allows these companies to treat you like a product and they profit off of you. The industry isn’t worth any of this if you’re in it for the music but so many people just want fame.
Haven't you ever turned to this or that side, looking at your neighbors and saying to self, she/he is far better than x,y,z.... Here is the reason. It's not about the inner quality.
