- Gufi Paintal is an actor who appeared in some notable Bollywood movies in the 1980s, as well as television serials and plays.
Initially trained as an engineer, he would go on to follow his younger brother into acting. Arriving in Bombay in 1969 and Gufi took up modelling, worked as an assistant director for movies like Laila Majnu and acted in various movies and serials. His most well-known role is that of Mama (Maternal Uncle) Shakuni in the Mahabharat adaptation by B.R. Chopra and his son Ravi Chopra which Paintal himself recognizes as his best role.

Gufi should write a book on The Making of Mahabharat. Since chopras left, he is the one who knows the history behind making and he should record the events, when did they start planning, what are all the problems they faced,etc... That would be interesting for the future generations..
If he does, I'll definitely read it.

Gufi Saab I was 9 years old when I watched Mahabharata in 1988 . Unfortunately I could not understand Hindi since I am from south. But for me when I think of Krishna, Duryodhan, Karnataka, Arjun and great Mamshree. You take any thing from Mahabharata the characters from this serial comes to my mind. Now I am 39 and can understand and speak Hindi fluently . Believe me I had watched around 10 times all the episodes in you tube and my daughter who is 8 years now is watching it and she is great fan of mamshree and chowsar. she keeps saying pow baraha. A great epic to learn and adapt in life.
Huge respect to Gufi Paintal ji for serving in Indian Army..our very own Shakuni Mama from Mahabharat.

कुटिल शकूनि मामा श्री को भला कौन भुला सकता है । महाभारत सिरीयल आने से पहले कोई नहीं जानता था की शकुनि कैसा था कैसे दिखता था । गुंफी पेंटल साहब ने दिखाया की शकुनि ऐसा था और हम उन्हें ही शकुनि मानते हैं
चोपड़ा साब के सीरियल महाभारत में जब जब शकुनि की ऐंट्री होती थी तो इक बड़ा खास तरह का बैकग्राउंड म्युज़िक बजा करता था, वो मुझे कभी नहीं भूलता !
महाभारत में बहुत सारे कलाकारों ने काम किया है लेकिन कृष्ण से लेकर भीषम पितामह तक की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिकायों के लिये भी कोई स्पेशल म्युज़िक पले नहीं होता था, होता था तो सिर्फ शकुनि के लिए ! वो म्युज़िक भी उस भूमिका को खास बनाता था !
बहुत ही सही बोला आपने गूफी साहब, वो म्युज़िक बजते ही दर्शक समझ जाते थे कि लो.. आ गया लँगड़ा, अब ज़रूर कुछ ऊलटा सीधा होने वाला है

शकुनी बेशक अपने भांजो का असली भला कुछ नहीं कर पाया, और उनको बिगाड़ने में काफी रोल रहा परंतु शकुनी नें अपनी परी जान पूरी आत्मा के साथ अपने भांजों का भला चाहा था।।

@@raj05sep Dude you have clearly not understood the character Shakuni... He was sent to destroy the entire Kuru clan... He mainly worked by inciting hatred between the Kauravas and Pandavas; his plans culminated in the largest war in history. Although he often failed in his tricks against the Pandavas, he never lost faith in his ability to destroy the lineage of Kuru. A far-sighted man, his plan was much bigger than causing problem to the Pandavas; he wanted a full-scaled civil war between the branches of Kuru clan, which would destroy the whole clan, fulfilling his revenge. He feared nobody, except Krishna, whom he considered as an obstacle, since he knew that only Krishna had the power and influence to foil his plan.

Acting itni acchi ki nahi lagta ki acting kar rahe the,aisa lagta hai wohi Shakuni hai. One of the reasons why the original Mahabharata is evergreen,every character felt like they were the actual character. When I watched that show for the first time in 2009-10 when I was 10years old,I still believed they embodied the actual characters they were,such acting is rarely seen.

So true Gufi sahab. Yeh hate kab khatam hoga? My family took refuge in India too and had to leave life as they knew it behind because of the India Pakistan divide. Not only the Muslim and Sikh community but also Sindhi community lost everything . Moreover, we don’t even have a state in India representing our community. But, we live in India, Pakistan and all over the world like honey in milk!
