Our brain remembers musical lyrics differently than just regular memory. Its taps into various parts of the brain instead of just the language centre, it intrinsically ties the words to the musical sounds. When you change the musical aspect from how you originally perform it, or without the original musical element all together , its much tougher to recall the lyrics. Its why we teach kids the alphabet to a melody, or some people remember the periodic table by setting it to music. Thats why his natural reaction to forgetting was to back up and sing the lyrics the original way to try to remember. It has nothing to do with not loving the music anymore. Our brains just work in weird ways with music and memory. Its a fascinating topic of study, and well worth looking into.

When youre a song writer you make thousands of songs. And only 20 will ever be heard. (It's an exaggeration but you get the point) and with old songs like "Damnit" it's gonna be hard to remember every lyric, especially when They're still making new music today.
