This regiment is soooooo ripe for lore. The generational service alone opens up all kinds of possibilities relating to bloodlines and illegitimate children that feeds into the fierce loyalty of the troops.
Time to watch "Vostroyan Charge" by Karl the Deranged again. I have some of those old Vostroyan minis and they're actually some of my favorites. For old metal sculpts, I actually think they look pretty neat.
I have now become a Vastroyan fan. The concept of, "Brother, I have cleaned, checked, double checked, disassembled, and reassembled every part of this gun. It will not fail you. I have patched your armour and refitted your mask. Do us proud and return safe." Vs everyone is guard, heres a factory standard gun, forget your name, forget your family.
After the Zach Snyder comment, I’m fully in the camp that as much as Bricky hates them, the way he looks at things he enjoys vs the ones he doesn’t, he is very much Eldar in attitude. Which as he previously mentioned, would make him a class B personality in Disco Elysium. Full circle.
Fun fact GW made the vostroyan first born because they felt too much of the exsisting guard range was too much WW2 style and they wanted a more sci-fi grim dark army so they made the vostroyan firstborn.
Ahhh, yes. Far too much WW2 influence from their existing WW2 model line. Gotta throw some Napoleonic influence from their existing Napoleonic model line! They're just Cossacks with badass gas masks and Hard Bass
How "Too much of the existing guard range was WW2 style"? They were around since proxy-in-toys from back in the 80s and 90s popular shows were lineout traced (and some popular army images) for sketch pages in the 2nd edition primers. Half the sample regiment origins are movie references.
GW has a canon Feudal Japan/Samurai regiment, the Tekarn Iron Fist. This is something I want to see maybe a 3rd party make models for because GW will probably never get to them.
The fact that Bricky tripped up and accidentally just said "the Guard" when talking about the Cadians in a list of different Guard regiments is a wonderful example of how the Cadians are basically the default Imperial Guard.
"That lasgun is also an axe" Ancient Terran Russians of the 1500s using a bardiche axe to mount muskets for more accuracy: "Based." Also, I look forward to the discussion on the upcoming novel "Morvenn Vahl: Spear of Faith" AKA Night Lords vs Sisters, AKA the book designed for Bricky himself

In a way this episode is fairly Christmas-ish. Vostroyan Firstborns are on a snow covered planet, its untied family members of generations fighting together, the remaining family members custom make their the Firstborn's weapons and give them to them and the Vostroyan Firstborn's uniforms are gold & red. So I'd this episode was pretty Christmasy. Aside from a Sanguinala episode in the future maybe....
You know I really wanna suggest you guys cover my favorite regiment, the Harakoni Warhawks, next time you guys do a random guard regiment. But I’m afraid they might not have enough lore lol
Do the Warhawks have that much lore? Elysians probably have just enough lore to do a whole episode on. Maybe warhawks could be featured in it too as a combined episode.
@@gokbay3057 yeah that’s exactly my point, they have like 2 paragraphs of lore total which essentially just says they are Elysians but better drop troops, they have a very high rate of conscription to the tempestus scions, and that they live on a world with ridiculously tall hive spires, even taller than usual, and hunt vapourwyrms. That’s about all ive heard, but the kasrkin minis that were shown in the episode were painted in the harakoni warhawks color scheme
@chronosaiyan1953 I think I read one of their short books and they mention they have a high corsair and piracy problem in their sector. This causes them to constantly go on rapid strikes and incursions to dislodge hold outs and raze bases leading to a high amount of veterans in their regiments.
As a weird neurodivergent who’s special interest is pre Peter the great Russia and the strelsty I can confirm that the Vostroyan Firstborn were made in a lab to be my exact form of crack.
My BFF is currently kitbashing and green stuff sculpting a full vostroyan army. He kitvashed the kaserkin units and gave them long coats and the hats. They look great so far
I love these guys an their Imperial Russia/Cossack feel. Also, Waterbuffalo? At least in real life those kind of hats would be made of bearskin and referred to as such. So Vostroya probably has some bear equivalent on their planet.
They got horse sized mutant dogs that hunts in pairs. It's not uncommon for kids to be snatched off the streets . 2 of them killed a 5-man armed party in ambush. They are such an issue that pest exterminators actually got pay decent enough to afford a flat for an 8-person family. That's like better than most of the Imperium can afford
The one premier I never would want to miss. Dang it! The Vostroyan Firstborn are my favorite Guard regiment. I love their lore, their drip, their ideology, their facial hair, love them a lot. Favorite regiment bar none.
Vahallan info is rather out of date. They did indeed used to be a blatant red army expy who really hated orks but since they're the focus regiment for the Cain books they've since had some more love. Colonel Regina Kasteen is one of the best guard characters not called Yarrick and it's criminal that she hasn't got a mini yet like the Ghosts did.
first two minutes: Bricky: i got food posioning over the holidays... (jokes) from eating a parasite. what i heard: Bricky eats a tyranid while on vacation and has to purge the xeno from his stomach.

There is definitely a lot of streltsy influence in the vostroyans alongside the whole 18th century Russian grenadier look… that axe/lasgun combo reminds me of how the streltsy were trained to fire their arquebuses using their bardiches (big axes) as stands
The Vostroyan are my favorite regiment of the guard, which is mostly the reason I haven’t picked up guard in my time playing the game. Might eventually 3d print like a kill-team maybe. Excited for this episode, they’re just little Firstborn.
On tonight's episode of The Ridiculous Tour: Bricky's voice is muffled the entire time because he pulled his Vostroyan hat down too far, he could have said _anything_ DK spends the entire episode talking about a specific Vostroyan card game And Shy is in a hammock, not paying any attention to all this, and can you blame her? All this to come after the break!
Several years ago, I read a 40k book called Rebel Winter. It featured the Vostroyan Firstborn VS the Orks and rebels. I remember the characters being pretty good even if the main plot wasn't super interesting.
Ay the Vostroyans, my favourite guard regiment. I love pure style of these guys, the lore, and the historical inspiration. Love them the most followed by the Krieg. Gonna be a good episode.
35:57 the vostroyans do get to screen time in several BL novels, pandorax where they lead a tank counter boarding action inside a battleship, eyes of Ezekiel introduced the shamed second born squadron, and caifus is in charge of a vostroyain unit good of Jurgen
The best part about Rebel Moon is that it was orginally pitched as a Star Wars movie and Lucasfilm rejected it more that once, and they weren't the only ones to reject it. Warner Bros also rejected it a couple times. This thing is a twisted abomination of random sci-fi bits that Snyder stitched together into something worthy of the flesh sculpters of the Drukhari. And just like the poor victims of the Haemonculi covens, it's absolute agony as it writhes across our screens is truly horrific to behold. He dragged it around showing it to the various studios for years making slight alterations until he found somebody who would pay him subject everyone to this horror. And the worst part is somebody decided he needed to make two of them.
It is good to see one of the second string regiments get the spotlight. Especially when they used to be bigger. Now I ask of you, can we please have an episode on the Talarn Dessert Raiders?
35:13 Another thing about the Streltsi: There's in Total War warhammer a Kislev unit (basically russians) that are called Streltsi and have also a gun-axe combo lmao
25:00 that also poses an interesting idea since the vostroyan would also be generationally trained with the weapons they use, making them more effective than a guardsman issued a plasma gun out of no where for the first time in his life.
Props to Guilliman for being ruthless/merciful enough to impose such a barbaric (& surprisingly light by 40k standard) penalty on Vostroya. Not only is it lenient, it creates a whole culture around war, heritage, and manages to inspire pride among the populace.
So they are basically the 40k version of Kislev from Warhammer Fantasy who are an amalgamation of eastern Europe and polish culture. At least the old school version of Kislev, the newer version that appears in Total War: Warhammer 3 and will appear in the upcoming "Old world" tabletop game is a much more flanderized version of them where they are now basically just the "Russian ice and bear faction".
Also Vostroyan Family: Mon - your old brother\sister is somewere kicking ass and you never gonna be as good as hin\her. 2ª child - "forever danmed to live on the shadow of its old brother\sister"
I'm not one of the seven Vostroyan fans, but I do approve of the wide variety of Guard regiments told by the lore, and condemn GW for failing to support their own lore with current miniatures.
The Vostroyan regiment and model range were not a '90's release. These were released for a Campaign Event (Medusa V) in the early 2000's, probably 2005. So, still quite old models. Imperial Guard regiments (with minuatures) from the 90's are Tallarn Desert Warriors, Mordian Iron Guard, Cadian Shock Troops, Valhallan Ice Warriors, Attilan Rough Riders and the Catachan Jungle Fighters. With a limited edition Praetorian regiment arguably also in the mix (late 90's). The first new regiment miniatures were the Armageddon Steel Legion, which was released in 2000 or 2001 (Armageddon Campaign event).
I'm offended that Bricky called the Valhallan Ice Warriors "literally just the Red Army" because there are very clearly some Finnish elements in there too, and I'm neither Finnish nor a Valhalla fan
Man, i love being a diehard fan of armies people think are boring or dumb. Both the (too edgy said the night lords player) space sharks and the now (literally just the red army) Vallahan. Honestly, I really hope other guard reigments get love in 11th and maybe 12th in 10 years. Good video guys.

@@floricel_112 if your government tells you to both do your factory job AND go to the front you are not at fault when you pick one or the other.
I got a quote for you.
"It is often joked, that the eloborate mustache is just as much part of the uniform as their kit bag." ~Emberly Vale
"Protivogaz" song intensifies.
ID RATHER BE A DRUNK THAN A RACIST!
*successful hit*
Never thought I’d see the day that Vostroyans got a full episode before Tempestus Scions, but still very nice to see more obscure guard love.
Vostroyan got that good old survivalist mentality when it comes to children. "Two is one, one is none"
as a Canadian I can confirm that the picture at 7:38 is indeed accurate, you may now carry on with your day.
@@SomeHumanIGuess Slavs & Hardbass are timeless, just as God intended. > Source: I am a Slav
"We already have the Red Russians, let's throw in the White Russians too!"
How "Too much of the existing guard range was WW2 style"? They were around since proxy-in-toys from back in the 80s and 90s popular shows were lineout traced (and some popular army images) for sketch pages in the 2nd edition primers.
Half the sample regiment origins are movie references.
You say that like it's a bad thing. the Tsarist aesthetic slaps hard.
GW has a canon Feudal Japan/Samurai regiment, the Tekarn Iron Fist. This is something I want to see maybe a 3rd party make models for because GW will probably never get to them.
Thanks for the info!
They’re not canon. But they are cool looking.
The fact that Bricky tripped up and accidentally just said "the Guard" when talking about the Cadians in a list of different Guard regiments is a wonderful example of how the Cadians are basically the default Imperial Guard.
"That lasgun is also an axe" Ancient Terran Russians of the 1500s using a bardiche axe to mount muskets for more accuracy: "Based."
Also, I look forward to the discussion on the upcoming novel "Morvenn Vahl: Spear of Faith" AKA Night Lords vs Sisters, AKA the book designed for Bricky himself
In reality they were more of a weirdly shaped bayonet, then whatever nightmare was on that picture.
@@DrNiradino oh no, this wasn't the axe head mounted to the gun, this was an axe with a crook in it that the Russians would use as a stand for their muskets
Look up the Polish gun axe

Eternity Gate - Necron Portal mounted on Monolith to transport troops across/between worlds.

Keep in mind, the Dark Angels are not to be confused with the Fallen Dark Angels, traitors from the Horus Heresy.
And there’s the Red Angel Angron, vs the Blood Angels chapter, led by the angel-winged Primarch Sanguinius, the Great Angel and their successor chapters the
Angels Vermillion,
Angels Encarmine,

Angels Vampiric
Angels Vehement
Blissful Angels
Angels Carmine
Death Angels
Storm Angels
Or the short stories of A Lesson In Purpose: A Knights Angelicus Story or
A World Fallen - A Knights Angelicus Story
And this should not be confused with the Angel, also called the Sleeper and the Angel of Destruction, a powerful weapon created and used by the Emperor during the Unification Wars,
Or be confused with The Angel, which is the High Gothic name for an immeasurably powerful creature of Aeldari Mythology.
Not to mention all the different uses of “Knight”, “Blood”, and oh, did we talk about the Space Wolves and all the instances/names using “Wolf” in their books?
Just to name few.
Just a suggestion.
You could make it a trivia show where you read a name and DK has to guess what it refers to in the lore.
Да, I am one of 7 Vostroya fans... this makes me happy.
The concept of the Vostroyans dedicating their craft to their firstborn descendants is fascinating
Love it, they deserve more attention
There's a guy in my local scene who plays Vostroyans. His army looks so different than everything else, it's amazing
What is their lore?

Thank you for your sacrifice Shy, and Happy holidays to all.

I can confirm that the Vostroyan Firstborn were made in a lab to be my exact form of crack.
This podcast keeps making me consider my faborite flavornof each faction, the vostryan have become my #1 guard regiment.
My BFF is currently kitbashing and green stuff sculpting a full vostroyan army. He kitvashed the kaserkin units and gave them long coats and the hats. They look great so far
For Tanith fans like me, there is a Tanith command squad with Gaunt, Korbec, Bragg, and Larkin and one other. Sadly there’s no normal Tanith troopers
That is a shame.
Immediately gave a like after their hilarious reaction to the Warhammer 40k "The Snyder Cut".
Yeah...
I though Vostroyan were inspired by Prussia (old Austria).
@@Dracobyte That's Mordian
As a Jurgen simp I am devastated you call Valhallan's boring, at least you chose a good substitute.

Good to know that!
first two minutes:
Bricky: i got food posioning over the holidays... (jokes) from eating a parasite.
what i heard: Bricky eats a tyranid while on vacation and has to purge the xeno from his stomach.
"Son, you're going to war, to serve the Imperium and our planet. I spent the last five years building this lasgun for you; and this armor, to keep you safe as you go far from home. Emperor protect you son, and know that your family's hard work is always with you by your side."
There is definitely a lot of streltsy influence in the vostroyans alongside the whole 18th century Russian grenadier look… that axe/lasgun combo reminds me of how the streltsy were trained to fire their arquebuses using their bardiches (big axes) as stands
AS one of Seven Vostroyan Fans, love to see this! Bout time our boys got some representation!
Finally another guard episode!
Shy MVP for getting this out in one day. That said, "Lay on me" had me laughing at your expense. Enjoy your new year!
What if you have twins? One pops out before the other. That’s why Mario is considered Luigi’s older brother.
The Vostroyan are my favorite regiment of the guard, which is mostly the reason I haven’t picked up guard in my time playing the game. Might eventually 3d print like a kill-team maybe. Excited for this episode, they’re just little Firstborn.
On tonight's episode of The Ridiculous Tour:
Bricky's voice is muffled the entire time because he pulled his Vostroyan hat down too far, he could have said _anything_
DK spends the entire episode talking about a specific Vostroyan card game
And Shy is in a hammock, not paying any attention to all this, and can you blame her?
All this to come after the break!
The hats are warm. As someone who lives in a cold country the hats look warm
I swear, you guys get me through the week. I always look forward to Wednesdays
Thank-you shy, and the lads have a wonderful new years.
Thank you so much to shy for coming thru on vacation so we could still have a episode on time we appreciate you!
Thank you very much, Shy. I love your work
Today's been a real shit day, but I get to hear about my favourite guard regiment, so thanks. And your right about the hats
Congratulations you made me into a Vostroya fan
I guess nergal wanted to wish bricky a Merry Christmas
All im hearing about the Vostroyan First Born is FAMILY. What's next Vin Diesel as a Vostroyan first born and saying "Nothing beats Family"?
It is good to see one of the second string regiments get the spotlight. Especially when they used to be bigger. Now I ask of you, can we please have an episode on the Talarn Dessert Raiders?
35:13 Another thing about the Streltsi: There's in Total War warhammer a Kislev unit (basically russians) that are called Streltsi and have also a gun-axe combo lmao
Great episode y’all thanks for the quality and fun content every time you work so hard to bring us.
happy new years much love from Texas 🤠
25:00 that also poses an interesting idea since the vostroyan would also be generationally trained with the weapons they use, making them more effective than a guardsman issued a plasma gun out of no where for the first time in his life.
Well, this has convinced me to be a fan of the Vostroyans. Nice work, gents.
Props to Guilliman for being ruthless/merciful enough to impose such a barbaric (& surprisingly light by 40k standard) penalty on Vostroya. Not only is it lenient, it creates a whole culture around war, heritage, and manages to inspire pride among the populace.
18:16 I love my space cossack hats! How dare you!!!
All praise to Shy. Enjoy your vacation
This video gave me a favourite guard faction, and I’ve never played or bought Guard.
Bricky managed to do a lot with not much with this one. Well done. I do look forward to the day Tallarn gets an episode, whenever that may be.
Specifically Prussia (old Austria).
I wish there was a more variety of Imperial Guard models, other than Cadia or Krieg.

I'm not one of the seven Vostroyan fans, but I do approve of the wide variety of Guard regiments told by the lore, and condemn GW for failing to support their own lore with current miniatures.
This is it. I have found my favourite guard regiment. By far.
As the 8th fan of 7 of the Vostroyan Firstborn, the lore for them is criminally underrepresented.
I'm offended that Bricky called the Valhallan Ice Warriors "literally just the Red Army" because there are very clearly some Finnish elements in there too, and I'm neither Finnish nor a Valhalla fan
Glad they pointed out that 10 hours is a light shift for the Imperium. I was like "Wtf, I work more than that..."
You forgot Tallarn! The guard regiment that single handedly fended off the Iron Warriors.

@@EHilgy17 Tallarn may have fended off the ironwarriors, but Vostroyans pierced the T'au's plot armor

Perhaps I'm not one of those 7 mega fans, but the Voystroyans are super cool. I plan to make a platoon of every range someday, but the Vostroyans might get to join the Steel Legion and get a full company.
flamboyant, the word you were looking for was flamboyant, Bricky
23:00 I'd say Watchmen was good, but it was like 90% just using the comic as a storyboard and the worst parts were the Znyderisms so...
