Why do more groups not sing stuff like this anymore? That "sing the glory down" sound with that off-beat rhythm where they can just rare back and sing with all they have. I'm thinking about songs like "This Same Spirit," "Angels Step Back," etc by the Paynes. Stuff like "Joy Comes in the Morning" by the Hinsons. Songs like "A Different Way," etc by Heaven Bound. "I've Got My Foot On The Rock" by the McKameys. "I've Never Been This Homesick" by the Rambos. I could go on and on. Ernie Dawson and Heirline sing a song called "I'm Gonna Reach Heaven" that somebody like The Perrys need to do. You rarely ever hear the mainstream groups do stuff like that. If they do it's a sure hit. Do groups not realize that when gospel music was at its peak and groups would sell out 15,000 seat arenas, this is the kind of music they sang? When they got progressive and left this "sing the glory down" style, gospel music fanhood and sales went way down. I mean, even the Perrys have gotten away from it. They did one of the best ones like this a few years back with "How Long" but they stripped all the energy out of it with the arrangement and the track . Some gospel group that's gone downhill and is barely staying afloat should scrap the progressive style, get a piano player, drummer and acoustic/electric/bass guitar player and try to sing like those groups I mentioned. They'd see their attendance, energy and sales go up. People would be begging for live albums (which never happen anymore for this same reason). Just my honest, humble opinion as a former huge fan of gospel music and current unenthusiastic fan.
I'm with you 100%! It's because Singers like that used to sing with the Spirit and the anointing. A lot of them would even show their "Holy Ghost" anointed emotions, like weeping while they were singing a song from the very pit of their souls, and the bottom of their hearts! Now you never really see that kind of emotion anymore. They are just up there "performing." Now, unfortunately...a lot of them are singing more for like "just entertaining," and probably the $$. SO sad, but true. And I'm talking about even the Descendants of some of the old "GREATS" of Gospel. The newer Generation of those good ole' Faithful Christian Saints, is definitely NOT the same! (And some of those Old Gospel Greats, I truly loved and adored.) But their "2nd Generation Descendants" are just not the same, and they are not doing their Ancestors songs any justice! When they try to sing some of those same songs that their Grandparents even WROTE...it is NOT even the same. (I could name Names, but I won't.) You probably already know, as it's pretty obvious. But NO...We don't NEED or want "Entertainment." Most of us want that anointing. That "true spirit" of God in the songs, that will "touch hearts and change lives." A good spiritual song can sometimes reach a Person as well as a Sermon being Preached, could. (When is the last time you saw any of these Singers "weeping because they were actually "feeling" what they were singing?") Now a lot of them spend too much time "showing off" or sometimes even "cutting up" in ways that I don't think are appropriate or even respectful to the Gospel. (I'm not talking about the "harmless kind." As I know a "Merry heart" is good medicine.) But they need to leave the Performing and Entertaining to the Secular World! So, Yes...You are NOT the only one feeling this way, and thinking this. :/
