@@russellorr6720my assumption is to begin to dial in with the mortal … it starts hitting on a 6 then if the enemy doesn’t move before the mortal fires it hits on a 5 etc.
So your forcing the 88 to move and give up its shooting or risk being destroyed

@@TeutonicKnight92 Exactly. Mortars are cheap units and available to every faction. So despite the fact that the 88 hits like a truck, it can be shut down.

@@ssmarine5624 yea is one of the reasons I think the medium mortars 60" range is a bit too OP personally. You can hide them in a corner ruin and target virtually everything on the field shutting down any artillery you/your-spotter can see. I hope they reduce it to 36" or something with 3rd edition (and heavy mortar reduced to 48").
In "real life" fixed howitzers were MILES behind enemy lines and well out of range of mortars and active combat. Obviously that isn't very fun, to have this bad ass model that lives off the table for the entire game, but you can't then make the the mortar range the length of the table effectively matching a howitzer.
If that is no bueno it would be nice if artillery could "entrench" itself in place by going down for a turn. Not sure the rules, but you either go down, or pay extra points before the game to "build natural defenses/cover" around the artillery until you move, that make it harder for spotters to find them. Maybe it makes it so unless the team/spotter gets within X distance you can only hone up to a 3-4+ to hit with indirect fire. IDK, Just something to help long range unmoving artillery survive a bit better.

Yet another reason to always bring that Medium Mortar team. (And a sniper if you're a gambler.)

Nah, a sniper statistically only kills once per game, and hits 4 times. To much volatility, better to take mortar and light howitzer

the '88 still has the 'Fixed' rule, so needs the Advance order to rotate and fire, getting -1 to hit.
edit : I have been corrected, page 24 of the febuary FAQ.

    • @alecroller2154

I did a bit of digging just now, and I think the '88 is actually intended to be excluded from that rule. Comparing the German 88 against the Japanese 75mm Type 88, the German 88 explicitly lists a rotating platform. I've not seen a firm rule anywhere about the actual mount itself, but the closest approximation is the Vt600 which stipulates that it grants entrenched guns rotating mounts.
"Rotating Mount: Guns deployed in this position have a 360 degree firing arc." - which naturally means that there is no need to Advance, since targets will always be within the firing arc.
While rules as written the unit itself does not state it has a 360 degree firing arc, I feel like the fact that it explicitly says "1 Super heavy AT gun on rotating platform" vs the 75mm Type 88 reading "1 Heavy AT gun" implies a function unique to that unit.

@@alecroller2154 yeah, but in competative play, if the entry doesnt state the rule, it doesn't have it.....
the 2nd ed book just states 'platform mounted' and 'Fixed'.
AoG2 mentions the rotating platform but states 'Fixed'.
comparing the british, the 2pdr, bofors 40mm, 3.7"qf all have rotating platforms and have "Fixed".
I think the big difference is that tank turrets have powed rotation mechanisms, while these artillery pieces all had manual mechanisms, hence still having the 'fixed' rule.

@VioletMoonMedia With respect, with more digging, this is patently incorrect.
Page 24 of Feb 28, 2024 Errata and FAQ, top right question of page
"In early army books, AA Bofors gun and other similar guns... Are we really supposed to use these guns with just a 45° arc of fire or can they be used with 360°?
      >Base the use of the gun onto the actual model. If the gun is sold mounted on a turntable or rotating mount, then follow the rules for 360° arc of fire."
This objectively means that Rotating Mounts grant 360° arc of fire, supported further on page 25 stimulating that only guns "...described as mounted on a pintle, turntable, or rotating platform" can fire 360°.
A 3rd support is the SD.KFZ 10 'Gepanzerte' which upgrades its forward facing Light AT gun to a rotating platform for +5 points, clearly intended to give it 360° arc of fire.
If a Tournament Organizer makes you advance a Rotating Mount and take a -1 for it, find a new TO and place of play, because they don't have familiarity with the actual rules. As far as the FAQ and rules are concerned, "Fixed" as a rule only restricts its literal mobility, the Arcs of Fire component is overwritten by being granted 360° elsewhere.
