Naming his ships “royal” he was saying the Pirates were sovereign and under only their own law. Roberts thought of himself as royalty.
I'm Welsh and my surname is Roberts. My grandfather always used to say that we were related to Bartholomew Roberts. Then not too long ago he got really big into those Ancestry websites, as a hobby, and managed to get back as far as the very early 1700's. Turns out the Roberts side of the family were actually living Pembrokeshire at that time, so it could very well be true. Would love to know for sure!

During the time of John Bartholomew Robert, who later added the s, as many did back then, there were 6 families with the surname Roberts in the area of Little Newcastle. I did extensive research back in 2002-5 & would love to compare notes with you. My family, the Howells of letterston, twice married into his family. I guess the Howell women of Letterston, fancied the Robert men. One was Hanna Howell married Robert Roberts of Little Newcastle, with the key is George Robert being John's father. Personally, Black Bart is my favorite pirate captain. I love his flag, I think it's the best representation of pirate life. A man and death holding an hourglass. That's as badass as it gets.
Glad to hear that the fishermen on Robert's crew were acquitted. Jokes aside, it was probably horrible, getting kidnapped with the prospect of torture if you refused to cooperate, and death if you tried to desert - all the while not knowing if you'd get clemency if you were caught.
Look when you have a good name for a ship you have a good name for a ship. My grandpa had three different “Blue Martini” fishing boats. I mean he had thousands of Blue Martinis but mainly I’m talking about the boats.
I've never thought of cursing as a self defense technique. I can hear governor Plunket releasing a stream of obscenities in the pacing and tenor of Chevy Chase from National Lampoon Christmas Vacation ripping his boss.
Walter Kennedy, the guy who stole the Royal Rover, immediately started sailing back to Ireland, having given up piracy. However, they ended up in Scotland by accident. After causing a scene in every town they visited, part of the crew was arrested and hanged. Kennedy himself owned a brothel in Deptford, but got arrested for stealing from his own prostitutes. In prison, he was recognized as a pirate and hanged on July 21 1721.
Kennedy stole the Rover, & renamed it Royal Rover. Roberts did in fact name one of his ships Royal Rover, but not until after Kennedy left, which he did cuz he believed Roberts & the crew he took with him had perished.
Great again. I do not sadly have a note for it but i think i have read he may have picked name Bartholomew based on Pacific buccaneer Bartholomew Sharp.

this is a UA-cam video not an academic paper or book, it's first and foremost meant to be entertaining and form a cohesive narrative, if you want to learn actual history you can go and do your own research and I provide links in the sources with which to do so. it is true that the featured biographies use General History as a source, but the four other sources do not, and are based on newspapers and court documents. these were my primary sources when forming the timeline of the video, whereas the other two were used to fill in the gap to form a narrative. neither do I have the time to explain every single time, when an incident is potentially falsified by Johnson, because this is a UA-cam video for an audience with a short attention span
So in other words, you do not care if your youtube is truth or fiction. Unfortunately, people like you, having no regard, are those who willfully spread the falsehoods that, unfortunately, others believe is true. Fortunately, unlike you, I already know the truth.
I work with the information I have available at the time. I can't know of every single book or document about a certain topic, nor do I have the funds to acquire all of them. Then you're making assumptions based on lack of context. I have remade and republished multiple of my videos or made supplementary comments if I have found new information that contradicts previously published information, see my video on Blackbeard for example. Will I do it for this video? No. In the case of Blackbeard, my first videos on him painted an unjust picture. The incorrect details in this video are so minute that it is trivial to the narrative. It doesn't matter if certain events, like the one you provided, is false(which it wasn't, just alternate, as you said yourself), because the overall timeline of Roberts history is correct, as confirmed by sources like Baylus' book, based on period documentation, and the point still remains that Roberts is an overrated pirate with exaggarated success and that he and his crew were unpleasant. It doesn't matter if he didn't kill the Governor of Martinique as General History said(I even discussed this legend in one of my other videos on Roberts), because he still burned the ship full of slaves at Whydah(which was stated in General History, and corraborated by documents from the trial of Roberts crew).
@@mikemckelvey7144 Yes, I do know. I spent years researching Bartholomew Roberts, & am considered an authority by his owe kin. I tried to inform the creator of his errors, but saying it was just a youtube, it didn't matter, meaning that this dweeb, lile many before him, cares nothing for the truth, which is why errors are constantly repeated. The arm chair biographers just read or hear other fallacies, & repeat them. So does that mean when I create fake news about you, like how you were cheating on your partner, & gambled away, your grand ma's rent money, which is why she's homeless, and you're the one who killed you neighbors cat, etc, you'll be okay with it, right.
This could have all been solved with the following naming sequence: Fortune, Good Fortune, Great Fortune, Royal Forturne, and keep Divine Fortune in his pocket for the next ship

May I suggest you stick your nose into the Calendar of State Papers - Colonial Series - America & the West Indies. Or if your disinclined to the idea of reading thru 1000s of pages found within many books, let me suggest you pop over to amazon & get a copy of 'The True Adventures Of That Great Pirate, Bartholomew Roberts, wherein you will find that pages 114-183 is reference
material, & actually contains screenshots of the reference pages I spoke of. I'll post a link below.
Afterwards, you can re-tell your story, accurately, that's providing the truth is important to you. If not, then don't do biographies.

or better still, you can write to the author directly. Her email is in the book. She'll be happy to sell you an inscribed copy for $10.00 which includes free media mail shipping.

this is a UA-cam video not an academic paper or book, it's first and foremost meant to be entertaining and form a cohesive narrative, if you want to learn actual history you can go and do your own research and I provide links in the sources with which to do so. it is true that the featured biographies use General History as a source, but the four other sources do not, and are based on newspapers and court documents. these were my primary sources when forming the timeline of the video, whereas the other two were used to fill in the gap to form a narrative. neither do I have the time to explain every single time, when an incident is potentially falsified by Johnson, because this is a UA-cam video for an audience with a short attention span
@@madamrockford2508 You may believe ; you cannot" KNOW "unless you were there .
Don't like commentators with foreign accents annoying

The man with the best Articles of Agreement ever written.
Certainly some of the best known Articles, yes, and very fair they are too.
But no one else had the nards to hang a Governor from that Governor's own yardarm. Badass.
This could have all been solved with the following naming sequence: Fortune, Good Fortune, Great Fortune, Royal Forturne, and keep Divine Fortune in his pocket for the next ship
Monkey Island music? More than a little appreciated. He sounds like there could have been a lot more going for him if he was better at holding his own.
reject assassins creed, return to monkey island
“Roberts had not been in the pirate crew very long. He was tall, dark, and sexy as all hell, with chiseled features and eyes that could melt your heart with a wink.”
outta a Mills and Boon novel
I agree with you 100%.
Good job mate. Only three years..... the same as Blackbeard. Today we use, "Ride hard die fast."
