He can take pride in the fact that he is one of the only people in that building who could dub an English speaking character and then go to Japanese without it sounding engrish
I mean we've always known the voice acting scene in Japan is BRUTAL, but seeing it this up and close..... a SHEESH and a YIKES dude!! They're all SO good! Yet 90-95% of them go underappreciated, but only because the remaining 5-10% are just THAT MUCH better!! So crazy o_o
Then sometimes even the 5-10% are struggling getting big offers because most of the older popular ones are getting those offers. Well unless if they are just better then they'll be selected over those.
I mean if you lived in Japan for over two years and the only words you know how to say in Japanese are konnichiwa, arigato, and sumimasen, you're doing something wrong lol.
Iirc he said on the trash taste podcast that he tries to learn Japanese a few hours in a week via someone teaching him. I forgot If he hired a teacher or if he goes to some sort of school
No sht. Good that Connor made this video. Realy exposes that acting is not some bllsht like many morrons imagine it to be. Thats why sub is always will be better than dub.
@@Woodsaras Yeah, you just can't compare the effort Japanese people put into voice acting compared to voice actors in many other countries. There certainly are voice actors on the same level elsewhere, but they are rare.
Let's just be absolutely clear on this: Connor's reason for struggling is 100% his basic level of Japanese. It is obvious to everyone that he has both the confidence, the ability to enliven a character and the ability to perform, in voice acting, if only he knew the language better. I mean, the tone of that man's voice is maaade for VA work. So deep and smooth, wow. It's like the video of that homeless guy that was so good as a radio announcer, he was instantly given a job and is doing really well now. Not that Connor looks like a homeless person... well, actually...
@@wesleywyndam-pryce5305 That's what I was thinking the whole time! While not being very good at the language due to it not being his native language, he is still really good at pretty much everything else.
The VA sensei made me tear up a bit giving all the encouragement for people to pursue their dreams :') thanks Connor for giving us an insight into the VA world in Japan!
Episode 1 of “That time I got reincarnated as a Voice Actor in Nippon” was fantastic! It’s great to see this type of content. I fee like a surprising amount of people have a deeper connection to voice acting than they realize. That little segment explaining why VA’s are so iconic in Japan really made me understand that a bit better.
Connor: Tries Japanese tongue twisters in front of professional Japanese voice actors 😆 Me: who can't read a paragraph in my native language without stuttering 😐
That part stood out to me too! Being overly positive or not upfront is part of Japanese culture and her saying that is refreshing to me. Makes me wonder how Japanese people think of their own culture and if they wanted to change in any way.
I was introduced to Connor through trash taste but now I probably watch his content the most out of the boys. He just got so many interesting ideas and topics to explore.
fr, as well as connordawg and his streams. joey is great but tbh don't really dig his main channel, much prefer his second channel. and i would watch a lot more of garnt if i didn't care so much about spoilers and going in blind.
I wish I had a teacher like Shirakawa-san, the way he instructed Connor and the class was simply mind-blowing. Not only he adapted extremely well to having a foreigner who barely speaks japanese, he was also considerate, professional and incredibly helpful in general. Just look at the gestures he makes with his hands all the time, so that he can convey his words better. Very cool video, props to everyone who made it possible.
This was probably one of the coolest videos you’ve made so far! It was so intriguing and insightful getting to experience the step by step production process and also awesome to see you in your own voice acting element, doing the thing you’re best at and truly shine! I can really tell you put an insane amount of effort into this!
honestly connor is outdoing himself alot these past few months, Prime example being his Cosplay video, Love this kind of videos Hope he keeps doing cool stuff
Absolutely! I didn't even realize I was watching a 1-hour video about Connor trying professional voice acting and the whole behind the scenes of these pieces. I definitely enjoyed watching and laughing throughout the whole video. I loved it! 🥰
7:37 it might seem too simple, but this is honestly a really good advice. "If you fail, just keep smiling", it's something that a lot of people should do more. (not the failing part lol, but the smiling one)
Well failing is generally a natural part of the learning process when it comes to many things, so failure isn't necessarily a bad thing in most cases, so long as you're making a genuine effort to learn from it and improve.
sometimes you have to fail to learn, cause you be cant perfect right at the start, learning is a lifelong process its a cycle of failure and success. true failure is only when you give up without even trying or doing your best at it.
Mad respect to Connor for this holy shit. He's what? two years into learning Japanese (his third language?) and is really putting in effort to voice act on a professional level in front of native speakers and aspiring seiyu. And later voice acting along side a professional seiyu to the script of an anime. Great Job my guy!
@@Mikano_ñ Tbf his first two languages were Welsh and English which he picked up from a young age. Japanese though is not as easy to pick up especially when youre an adult.
Well if you learned your 2nd or 3rd language in a young age its very easy... But your 3rd or 4th language its hard because you either couldn't put time and energy to it
You are the king of ‘out of your comfort zone’ experiences. You’re so good at just facing the scary situations. I would have cried walking into that class having to read in front of a class and in a language I’m not confident in. You’re awesome man, you did so this was so fun to watch
Can we appreciate that Connor dove into learning voice acting in a language he's not fluent in? He did so well, and I love that he will always been willing to embarrass himself just to show up something really cool in Japan.
He's just doing it for the clicks and most his content is always "Fixing Voice Acting" crap, like dude your not so good that you can make things better. 51:38 I remember couple of Polish voice actors talking about how "back in the analog days" they had to be all there together in the booth, and that really allowed everything to feel much more natural. And now, when they record separately often times there's something slightly unnatural (that listener can pick up on) just because you're not actually talking with another person.
"Back in the analog days" it was also extremely rare to have fully dubbed shows in Poland. Movies, rarely, at least for kids (say - Disney movies or Hannah Barbara shows). Regular movies, anime shows? One guy voicing it. And I think the most "prolific" voice actor who voiced like most of 80-90s shows has passed away recently, so it's kind of an end of an era...
@@sebastianrosenheim6196 I see I'm not the only one in the comments with the video playing in the background so I don't have to experience it as badly lmao
You can definitely tell that in a way, this was Connor's love letter to voice acting and you can really see his passion and admiration of it come out during the interviews! Don't beat yourself up too much over mistakes, progress is still progress! You did a great job with this one, Connor
As someone who's tried learning a foreign language... I feel how Connor feels. I've noticed the teachers always encourage you no matter how many mistakes you make.
Tbh living in a country where you already speak it's language is way better than living in a country and you barely get by that's what I'm living through i know 3 one being my native english and the country's language
Man, Connor. You're crazy ambitious to have attempted this. Props. There's a base-level concept being proven in this showcase of what it takes to be a voice actor (or really, to achieve any endeavor): talent is not enough, you gotta put in the time to learn and practice. I like that Japanese culture has a baked-in expectation for every individual to keep learning, no matter how proficient they've become - when everyone is a student, then everyone is unified in their purpose, moving in the same direction despite any disparity in their present levels of ability.
Yes and the same principles apply for many other occupations, example musicians. You can’t get good from talent alone, it takes hours of practice and true dedication.
I felt so cringe imagining myself trying to do voice acting in another language in acting class with other students, that I had to mute the audio for that part. The balls on this man for going out of his comfort zone so much and so often, kudos to you Connor.
Connor: I'm a professional voice actor I don't need to go back to school Kaho: *I'm a regular here* Connor: _Hey guys, I'm going back to voice acting school_
I’ve never felt such an intense mixture of genuine admiration and second hand embarrassment than I did while watching this video. The absolute balls on this man. Bruh.
I would like to give a credit to Connor' japanese. He often says that his japanese is terrible but he is very confident while using it. He can easelly interact with native speaker and most important he is not afraid to make a mistake. Most common problem of people who learn new language is being afraid of making a mistake. Good job!
Tbh he is neither confident nor good, but he’s got the spirit. I appreciate his willingness to fight through discomfort, he puts himself in extremely difficult snd uncomfortable situations. Obviously he doesn’t really have time so I can’t put it against him, but his Japanese is definitely not good, he can barely put a sentence together, barely conversational, and seems well aware of the fact. We should definitely encourage his trying, but lets not lie to ourselves and him. He isn’t good.
@Jordan Conner no man it’s just as bad as any beginner. You can get to his level in a month or two most likely with moderate immersion (watching movies/shows, youtube videos, anime without subs, generally content for real Japanese people)
@@eresoup7229 i would argue that his Japanese is actually pretty good. Certainly not great, but it seems that he can get the message across using what he is got which is evidence of him having decent pronunciation and a somewhat decent vocabulary.

Sorry to be a prick but voice teachers have to act like that. It is their job to do all kinds of things so their clients will improve and avoid things that would stunt their growth, or else their clients would give them bad reviews, damaging their reputation and thus kicking them out of business. I just wish all businesses actually care like them since there are some businesses who do not care about their clients because they know it will not put them out of business.

I love how you go out and film your self trying experiences that are outside of your comfort zone. Feels inspiring how I can see your dying from British culture cringe but still voice acting in a language that you only started learning two years ago. The production quality of these videos is basically TV quality of BBC productions which is also awesome :D
In summary, if you want to become a voice actor in japan: - Learn the basics of voice acting - know your strengths and weaknesses - have balls of steel - know how to take criticism - very FLUENT in japanese - put in the work, prepare and practice - Never give up and keep trying In other words, when you take this job you really have to make sure you know what you are doing and your goal. I'm sure there is a lot more but I'm going to have to give that to the comments.
even though training to be a voice actor is as harsh as training to any other profession, i feel like training to be a voice actor is way more fun, specially when you have a nice and easy going teacher like Shusaku
Dude, your Japanese has come so far in such a short time. I know barely nothing but it's obvious how different and advanced you've become in just the past year.

I'm very curious as to how Connor was able to get into the VA school and the studio despite his massive balls of steel slowing him down. I'm getting second hand embarrassment lmao. i would've shat(?) myself if i was in his situation. What a madlad. Respecc to this man for stepping really really far away from his comfort zone
I love seeing this side of Connor. He's very vulnerable and open with this video. You can really tell and feel every emotion that was going through his body, and more importantly, how happy and appreciative he was getting to be there and meet everyone. I'm happy he's fulfilling his dreams and I hope he becomes as successful as he hopes. Good luck to him! 😊👍👌
You can still tell he's a professional throughout it's just lots of Western Voice acting is actually pretty transient and solitary. I think the best performance comes w multiple actors in one studio reading it like a play but that is logistically difficult. It's how excellent stuff like Batman The Animated Series was done.
I hope we can see a part 2 in a year or two, when conor is more confident with his japanese. This was a great and very insightful video, all the people seemed very nice and kind.
Connor Narrating his own videos: Listen to the silken tones of my voice that could caress an angel's bottom... Connor Narrating ramen narration for an actual VA class: My name is Hans Moleman and I'm 38 years old, please kill me, the pain is too great...
I tried Japanese voice acting before and it was really hard because they speak fast when they're speaking normally so I can relate to Connor's struggle in this video this really gave me the courage to keep trying
That's a good and bad thing at the same time. You're free of restrictions but at the same time people can be rude or even a jerk and no one can complain about it. If you ever try to be rude to others in Japan, people will immediately stay away from you and you'll get secluded almost instantly.
I have to say, as someone who has a hard time in public just even being there, watching someone attempt something like this with so many barriers is incredibly uplifting. Thank you for this video, eye opener for the subject matter at hand and inspiring as well
Everyone in the schol seemed so nice, and the actors that were with you on that class looked so lovely and trying to get you to feel comfortable, that was so so nice to see :3
Nichika-san's so cute. She's almost like a doll, and her voice is so gentle. And that VA sensei is so inspiring. He really looks like he loves teaching others and helping them out!
Damn Connor, you got balls to walk in there and do this in Japanese. Oh god I feel inadequate watching this, I can only imagine what you felt and you know what you are doing. It’s just so intimidating. Thank you Connor for doing this and sharing with us. I would have just died trying to do this at all, in English, much less in a language just starting to learn. Respect!
As somebody with huge 'foreign language anxiety' (I literally skipped parts of Connor's Japanese acting because I was so anxious), I give massive props to Connor for not only trying to converse but act in a foreign language he clearly isn't comfortable with. It's really inspiring to see and I hope to become more comfortable in my foreign language use too.
To be honest, I admire connor for having the courage to do this even when his Japanese is not that great (still leagues better then mine). I am learning French and I would be petrified to do something like this in French. Bravo.
20 mins in so far and, before I forget, can I just give a huge thanks to you Connor for putting this out there. It’s an impossible task to just waltz into a class, in a foreign language, and be thrown in the deep end - in front of strangers, on camera. But the reality is that this is kinda what learning is! You fail and flounder repeatedly until you eventually fail a little less. And big kudos for the supportive environment you had from your teacher and peers. So far, a very motivating, inspiring, and human video. Can’t wait to see how it all pans out!
I really like how in Connors's videos all interviews are him speaking in English and they answering casually in their language. It makes me forget that they are actually talking in Japanese. You are doing a great job with the videos
I would pay for a tape of that man saying nice, gentle things in the face of my failures, and twisting them into positives. He seems like such a genuinely nice and really caring guy (which you can also tell by his attitude of showing up as his best professional self for his students, + the "you learn so much from your students" bit) that from him it feels more legitimately encouraging than insincere (which is more like what comments like that can sometimes feel like, in situations like this one).
fking hell, this is painful to watch as a person with quite severe secondhand embarassement. props to you Connor for taking it head on and amazingly, i would not be able to do it. cant imagine how i would even editing this, probably i would die lmao. Also we can say "Finally" This video has been coming and obvious to everyone who familiar with your content. Its just matter of when
I respect these people to death but one thing to be said is that if any of those top VAs had to go in an American studio they would struggle just as much. "wait I'm alone in the booth?" Language, local costumes and culture would be such a huge barrier to overcome.
Add to the fact they have to match the tone of someone else for a scene made to suit someone else and match the visual cadence of a scene meant for someone else and it’s little wonder why dubbing us a bit hard
Connor being able to form coherent, but short, sentences are proof of how far he has come in learning Japanese. I'd say it's quite good actually considering he just started learning it. Also, he really nailed the Voice Acting scene. Someone hire this guy to be a Voice Actor. Oh wait...
@@DarkG7X You don't learn a language by simply moving to a new country. Take a look at Gigguk or Sydney, their fluency in japanese is still non-existent. Connor has definitely put in some effort on his own.
@@eresoup7229 Yup, that's all I wanted to say. That it's probably past "just started". Wouldn't even say it's nooby. I had classmates in Uni in England that were speaking worse English after 3 years than Connor seems to speak Japanese 😄 Being able to read at that speed is even more impressive.
@Richard H Yea his reading was quite impressive, especially as it’s blind. Blind reading sucks because you sound incredibly stupid (as he did) and it requires actually reading each character, which you don’t normally do especially in Japanese that has kanji precisely because Kana are super bulky 高校生=こうこうせい, twice as long for the kana version
everybody is so nice to Connor, it's surprisingly wholesome to watch. And seeing the voice work going on up close like this makes voice acting a lot more exciting and amazing than what we see on screen normally. Overall, one of the most wholesome and fun to watch videos on this channel
Never in my life have I wanted Joey to kick down the class door and bail this man out as much as I did while watching this video. Connor really has a steel coat😂😂
I think his experience as a VA actually might have hurt him in some ways when reading in japanese. He have previously said that part of VA is being able to read scripts very fast and predict the words and this makes it so that he will read out the characters as soon as his brain processes what each individual character means but he have no idea what word that character is part of so his words comes out a bit odd at times.
Japanese VAs tend to get their scripts a few days in advance though, like what Joey got when he got chosen to voice act a game. So technically Connor should be able to get used to the Japanese dialogue days in advance before the recording if he was ever chosen to VA there.
@@norasyikinali6283 definitely if that was his only problem but sadly it is not. The Japanese VA business is so difficult that most Japanese people can't even pronounce Japanese words well enough to be qualified for the job which is why they have so many schools for it. Trashtaste went in depth on the topic when they had the Japanese VA as a guest. His only chance would be to land a role of a transfer student who is supposed to have a heavy accent.
@@sebastian-ny1sp True, and honestly, it'd be nice if he did considering the number of anime where the transfer student is actual just a Japanese seiyuu faking a foreign-accented Japanese, or even worse, speaking English. Although nowadays they're improving on being able to speak at least some English with a good enough accent.
Damn! Japanese voice acting school is S tier! So much thoroughness in teaching it. Talk about dedication to the art. I like how they do the tongue twisters. I figure they do them since a lot of the voice acting in the anime is a long stream of lines and you can't make any mispronounciations or stuttering.
The fact that he managed to survive being trained, it's just giving me chills and cringes trying to feel what the mood is in the room, when everyone's voice acting in a different language from yours, and that you don't even exactly know all of the language yet.

Man, Connor. You're crazy ambitious to have attempted this. Props. There's a base-level concept being proven in this showcase of what it takes to be a voice actor (or really, to achieve any endeavor): talent is not enough, you gotta put in the time to learn and practice. it never gets easier no matter how many of these videos you watch, connor is always either MC material or too painfully relatable
@anime. MDBJ shameless plug, i respect the hustle
" Obviously, I can't just turn up and voice an anime..."
- He says, after turning up in Japan and voicing an anime character. 🤣
You can still tell he's a professional throughout it's just lots of Western Voice acting is actually pretty transient and solitary. I think the best performance comes w multiple actors in one studio reading it like a play but that is logistically difficult. It's how excellent stuff like Batman The Animated Series was
done.
I hope we can see a part 2 in a year or two, when conor is more confident with his japanese. This was a great and very insightful video, all the people seemed very nice and kind.
Truly has the potential
I love your pfp bro

Connor Narrating his own videos: Listen to the silken tones of my voice that could caress an angel's bottom...
Connor Narrating ramen narration for an actual VA class: My name is Hans Moleman and I'm 38 years old, please kill me, the pain is too great...
I love how Connor introduced himself as a UA-camr to the other people instead of as a voice actor.
I tried Japanese voice acting before and it was really hard because they speak fast when they're speaking normally so I can relate to Connor's struggle in this video this really gave me the courage to keep trying
How did they treat you? I'm curious
I love how Connor acts like a real Japanese, being humble, giving several bows to everyone, and saying sumimasen so much😂
he doesn't have the vocab to act any different i guess
He has to, you need to adapt to the culture of the country you live in

That's a good and bad thing at the same time.
You're free of restrictions but at the same time people can be rude or even a jerk and no one can complain about it.
If you ever try to be rude to others in Japan, people will immediately stay away from you and you'll get secluded almost instantly.
I have to say, as someone who has a hard time in public just even being there, watching someone attempt something like this with so many barriers is incredibly uplifting. Thank you for this video, eye opener for the subject matter at hand and inspiring as well
Everyone in the schol seemed so nice, and the actors that were with you on that class looked so lovely and trying to get you to feel comfortable, that was so so nice to see :3
WHAT THE FUCK???
Nichika-san's so cute. She's almost like a doll, and her voice is so gentle.
And that VA sensei is so inspiring. He really looks like he loves teaching others and helping them out!
I reckon if Connor ever gets fluent, he'd be an amazing anime voice actor and I'd reckon he'd get hired a lot.
That would be great for his VA career, but he probably makes a whole lot more money streaming and doing videos.
Well, hardly a bad idea to have a backup plan.
Respect!
WTF???
As somebody with huge 'foreign language anxiety' (I literally skipped parts of Connor's Japanese acting because I was so anxious), I give massive props to Connor for not only trying to converse but act in a foreign language he clearly isn't comfortable with. It's really inspiring to see and I hope to become more comfortable in my foreign language use too.
I get embarrassed for connor pretty much every video of this style he makes
same
@@paulchomedey2073 me too and I'm not even the one doing it, oh man :(
Same here 🙋 Huge kudos to Connor for being able to perform in a foreign language👏
Bruh the 2nd hand embarrassment is so damn high every cell in ny body is cringing so big props to connor for doing this
As a professional Introvert myself, I was having a second hand anxiety the entire class.
The whole video video I wanted to dig a hole into the ground and jump in it 😭
i have found my people
To be honest, I admire connor for having the courage to do this even when his Japanese is not that great (still leagues better then mine). I am learning French and I would be petrified to do something like this in French. Bravo.
I’m sure your French is great😊
Hope you have fun learning it !
No need to worry about your French. Just for your sake I hope you're not planning to live in France.
actually, he has a good and unique voice character, if he really wanna dwelve deeper in Japanesse VA, i think many studio will looking for him ..
Your teacher had such a smooth and calming voice, everyone was very considerate and polite given you're not fluent in Japanese
Your confidence to voice act in another language with people around you that are native to it is awe inspiring
fking hell, this is painful to watch as a person with quite severe secondhand embarassement. props to you Connor for taking it head on and amazingly, i would not be able to do it. cant imagine how i would even editing this, probably i would die lmao.
Also we can say "Finally"
This video has been coming and obvious to everyone who familiar with your content.
I think they are well aware of that fact. I feel like they have so much respect for Connor getting out of his comfort zone to do this.
Connor walking into the building at 1:20 looks like an old man 😂
Connor being able to form coherent, but short, sentences are proof of how far he has come in learning Japanese. I'd say it's quite good actually considering he just started learning it. Also, he really nailed the Voice Acting scene. Someone hire this guy to be a Voice Actor. Oh wait...
Is it that he just started learning? He has been in Japan for a couple of years now, no? (Not that I think it's easy to learn it in that time)
@@DarkG7X You don't learn a language by simply moving to a new country. Take a look at Gigguk or Sydney, their fluency in japanese is still non-existent. Connor has definitely put in some effort on his own.
He’s definitely past “just started learning”, but can’t put his nooby level against him, man’s busy
Blind reading sucks because you sound incredibly stupid (as he did) and it requires actually reading each character, which you don’t normally do especially in Japanese that has kanji precisely because Kana are super bulky
高校生=こうこうせい, twice as long for the kana version
Goosebumps when the sensei laughed at 15:26, i interpreted that to: "I will make you cry tall foreigner-san, prepare to be educated"
It's feels like a documentary, tbh. Excellent job, Connor!
No one can ever tell this man he doesn’t have balls. Props to you Connor 👏
I'm sure he's been balls deep in Shibuya Kaho, so that was never in question.
@@kristoffer8609 Absolutely not.
@@subbss If you say so bro.
Wait, so VA stood for "Voice Actor" and not "Vile Ape"?
Huh, I always thought connor's voice could be used for voice acting.
I thought it stood for Various Accidents after watching the trash taste specials
I thought it was Virginia lol
I thought it was veterans affairs
WTF? I thought it's Vaginal Atrocities.
Bruh, it stands for Vesture Atrocities of course!
everybody is so nice to Connor, it's surprisingly wholesome to watch.
@@moondust2365 fck english.
I hope connor gets good roles for his english voice soon
It's like getting put in an art class without even knowing how to draw a proper circle, or maybe even a stickman.
So I'm late to this video. But dude, connor is so amazing for putting himself out there. Everyone was so supportive and patient as well. Wonderful video. Keep it up!
