Phil is struggling with Faithless against Insomnia.
If there is the one dance and disco house anthem of the mid-90s, it is definitely Insomnia by Faithless.
Faithless is a British electronic band formed in London in 1994 by Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo.
Faithless members Rollo, Sister Bliss and Maxi Jazz, as well as DJ mixer and producer Goetz Botzenhardt, are listed as the official authors of the song.
Rollo is the brother of Dido. The young mixer and producer Goetz Botzenhardt teamed up with Rollo Armstrong in the nineties and their collaboration led to many of the big dance records and remixes of the time. He went on to record and mix the first two highly acclaimed Faithless albums and then recorded Dido’s multiplatinum-selling Album ‘No Angel’.
Sister Bliss, keyboard player and songwriter, recalled the creation of Insomnia in an interview:
"We wrote Insomnia in a garden shed, since that was where our producer Rollo Armstrong had his studio. Being in there all day and then DJ-ing all night was like having permanent jetlag. So I came up with the title Insomnia because I couldn’t get to sleep. Rollo didn’t really play an instrument. He has a condition called synaesthesia where you see music as colours, so he’d just describe how he wanted something to sound. We were very stoned a lot of the time.
Justin Robertson’s Lionrock influenced the slightly reggae bassline. Holding my big keyboard riff back until late in the song was an idea we got from Underworld’s way of building tension: just waiting, waiting, waiting then - bang! When Rollo said “Do big strings” I remembered Donna Summer’s I Feel Love and how it goes from a major chord to a minor one, and did the same. The bells in the intro came from a BBC sound archive discand were used as samples for it."
Maxi Jazz, rapper, songwriter added:
"I got a call from Rollo asking if I could write some words for a new dance track called Insomnia. I spent 20 minutes with a pad jotting down my thoughts, finished the lyrics in the studio the following evening, then spent about 25 minutes putting the vocals down. That was that. The lyrics are from personal experience. I didn’t suffer from insomnia, but I’d just had an abscess on my tooth. It was so painful it would keep me awake. The lines about having no electricity and reaching for the pen in the darkness were also from real life. I had an electricity meter and when the money ran out you’d get six or seven pounds of credit and then - “Boom!” - the lights would go out. So I used to write by candlelight."
The song took, you wouldn't believe it, two releases for the full huge success. The song was re-released as the second single on 27 November from their first 1996 album Reverence.
The first 1995 release reached #27 in the UK Singles Chart, while also topping the UK Dance Chart. On re-release in October 1996, the song reached a new peak of number three in the UK and topped the charts in Finland, Norway and Switzerland, as well as the American and Canadian dance charts.
The original album version is almost nine minutes long and contains some lyrics that were not allowed to be broadcast on the radio due to their explicit content.
Maxi Jazz said in an interview: "That first line - “Deep in the bosom of the gentle night” - is not me channelling Dylan Thomas. That was forced on us by MTV because they felt the original first line - “I only smoke weed when I need to” - was too graphic. There were eyebrows raised about the lines “Making mad love to my girl on the heath / Tearing off tights with my teeth” but they managed to stay in."
This original album version also contains the bell ringing at the beginning of the song, which is generally not known to club audiences, as many people only know the better known "Monster Mix" or the "Monster Mix Radio Edit", a short version for radio broadcasts. The "Monster Mix" was the mix included on the Greatest Hits album "Forever Faithless", with the original arrangement coming from Bill Padley of "Radio Victory".
The "Moody Mix" featured on some of the singles was also included on the "Reverence / Irreverence" release.
DJ Magazine ranked the song #14 on its 1998 list of "Top 100 Club Tunes".
MTV Dance placed "Insomnia" at #22 on its list of "The 100 Biggest 90's Dance Anthems Of All Time" in November 2011.
In 2013 it was voted "The Fifth Biggest Dance Record Of All Time" by the readers of Mixmag.
I can't remember how many nights I played this song in my late 90's DJ days, its combination of rhythm and melody made me insomnia, too.

Rollo aka R Plus drop an album in 2019 called The Last Summer. It is outstanding and Dido does the vocals. I recommend it.
