- Israel is attempting to craft an image of victory - using the brutal spectacle of mass arrests of civilians - as its military hides casualty figures from the ground war in Gaza, says Jon Elmer.
"It does seem that Israel came out of the fighting pause and got feedback from their focus groups on what has to be done to build an image of victory that allows you to withdraw from this war with some semblance of at least operational legitimacy - because we know they’ve lost moral legitimacy, so they want to have a symbol of victory," Jon said.
"For the Israelis, because they don’t have the operational or moral legitimacy to fall back on, their principal war-fighting strategy is to stay alive. And part of the brutality of the massacres in the Gaza Strip is cowardice - it’s cowardice of their soldiers who don’t want to go and risk themselves."

I watched a You Tube video from a former Israeli soldier. He ( Jewish ) said he was taught from a young age to see the Palestinians as terrorists, sub human and animals. ( there are you tube videos of school’s teaching the kids songs about hating and killing Palestinians). The resistance is truly heroic, specially when one considers that they have been under occupation and then under siege for decades. Israel says 1200 people killed on October 7th. Have any post mortem reports or autopsy reports been shown? How many were killed by Isaeli action?

Just because war is horrible, amoral, in-just, and evil, does not mean it isn't necessary at times. I hate this idea. But it is hard to ignore, and it should be a painful idea! Especially for those with no skin in the game. For the individuals caught by the flying metal and fire, it is hell on earth.
When the world was yanked out of its wilful ignorance of the slow ongoing murder of Palestinians in Gaza, I felt that the futility of the fight made the actions of Hamas inexcusable. At the time I felt that throwing petrol onto a fire was always a bad thing, and criminally insane.
And I'm not talking about the Israeli victims of Oct 7 and the days following. I am talking about the inevitable retaliation of Israel on the people of Gaza. Harm minimisation remains a powerful argument, because it embodies a profound respect for individual human lives. Every child who WAS living in Gaza, deserves the best possible quality of life, at EVERY possible moment!!!!
But a well documented slow burning campaign of murder and torture, is not something anyone of good conscience can ignore. For way too many decades the world has ignored the hell that Palestinians live in, and brush off the fact that they could not escape. For too log many people felt the Palestinians CHOOSE to survive in Gaza, so they made their own bed. I don't think many people have understood the ramifications of the Israeli blockade since 2014. And people certainly were largely unaware of the torture of Palestinians in the West Bank.
One thing we have all overlooked is the cost the Israelis are paying for oppressing the Palestinians. In torturing and dehumanising the Palestinians, they are destroying their own humanity. This is NOT a sustainable culture for any society. People who are trained to use violence to resolve disputes, do not unlearn those behaviours when they are among so called friends. Some do, but many do not. The vulnerable members of the Israeli community pay the price and the overall diversity and resilience of the Israeli people is dramatically reduced. No group wins from violence in the end. Survival by itself,is not good enough for humans: it is a living death.
So Hamas, for all its idealogical savagery, embodies two tenants that are very familiar to most westerners: 'We're not gonna take it any more!' and 'Its better to die on your fee, than live on your knees'. There stand against Israel is fundamentally heroic, because they KNOW it is a fight they cannot win. Every young child that used to play in the streets of Gaza, knows this in their bones. They are not 'indoctrinated by xenophobic hatred', they maintain the struggle to live because their very existence is a political act against the crimes of Israel. Every wave of hunger the children feel remind them that slow starvation is not bad luck, it is a carefully planned campaign of Israeli violence against the future of Palestinians in the occupied territory.
Humans are not dogs! They do not cower under the threat of violence. They return fire. They give the bully a bloody nose.
So the children my be confused and terrified, and many of them will not understand intellectually why they are being killed. But they do understand why Hamas fights. When EVERYONE in Gaza knows someone murdered by an Israeli sniper, or in jail, they all know, their lives are forfeit. The only question is HOW you die.
This does not make the people of Gaza terrorist collaborators, it makes them heros.

Overtime, we'll know what the close to accurate casualties figures are. The Israeli government will not be able to censor that information, with so many prying eyes on that data, due to the cultural/religious sensitivities on this topic. The Israelis, along with Americans, who are against Netanyahu and his coalition cabinet might even use this information against them, so those numbers will be known in one way or another.
With all things considered, judging from all the news, social media reports and videos of the fighting released (from both sides), and daily analysis from many people looking at them, the IDF toll of both KIA and Wounded is extremely likely much higher than they claim. Way too many mistakes they made during the operations, especially with the lack of infantry escorts with their tanks, as well as the carpet bombing, producing so much rubble which is more advantageous to the Palestinian defenders than the IDF assault teams.
Being a conscripted army with so many young officers, who have are obviously not trained in dealing with urban guerrilla combat (especially on how to clear a room)...on top of a corrupted government, the IDF was already full of inherent problems, prior to the ground invasion.

As hinted by Jon mentioning just the Ashkelon hospital treating almost 2000 military personnel wounded by last week, and taking into consideration the scenario in which the israeli army is fighting, estimates of less than 10 KIA and roughly three times that amount in wounded each day by the beginning of the invasion is absurdly euphemistic. We have to imagine what can mean for a human to be occupying and controlling ruins, with the thought (and bullets constantly flying about) of enemy fighters (and they're going to multiple for each family member killed under israeli bombing...) possibly hiding with a rifle under any boulder up to one kilometre away aiming at one's head. The IDF's approach is one of military foolishness of the highest degree (does the israeli ministry of defense distributes free coc**ne to the high ranking officials?), i'd really like to ask an average israeli soldier inside the city now how does it feel to be there, they're possibly going to mumble verses in an animalistic fashion for many of them must be close to a nervous breakdown (understandably!).

Over 200 tanks and military vehicles destroyed, a tank normally has 5 personnel, the othe military vehicle that doesn’t have the armour of a tank carries 10 personnel, do the maths, but from a very reliable news source the figures are around 1800 dead soldiers, around 4000 severely injured and can’t fight no more and over for 4000 injured
