    And because Steamboat Geyser likes to mess with us...it just erupted on December 30 at 7:02 PM MST, a few hours after this video was posted. The eruption was well detected by the new infrasound monitoring station in Norris Geyser Basin. This brings the total number of Steamboat Geyser eruptions for the year to 9.

The GNSS and infrasound data are still being calibrated/tested, and we hope to have those data accessible within a few weeks. • @usgs
      @usgs  6 місяців тому +8

      GPS data can go back to the late 1990s in Yellowstone, depending on the station (some are older than others). There are lots of places to see those data -- to start with, the map interface on the YVO website (www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/yellowstone). Click on one of the star symbols (which indicates a GPS station) to see the time series in east, north, and up directions. There are also neat map interfaces for GPS stations covering the entire USA (and more) at EarthScope (www.unavco.org/instrumentation/networks/status/all) and the University of Nevada, Reno (geodesy.unr.edu/NGLStationPages/gpsnetmap/GPSNetMap.html). One of our weekly "Caldera Chronicles" articles describes how to access and interpret GPS data (www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/a-diy-guide-yellowstone-gps-data).

    USGS, I have a question - "All volcanoes in the [Cascade Range | California] are at normal background activity levels." When was the last time a CVO or CALVO volcano was at something other than 'normal background activity levels'? When was the last time a volcano other than Mt St Helens was at something other than 'normal background activity level'? Thanks 😄

    • @usgs
      @usgs  4 місяці тому +1

      The last time a lower-48 volcano was not at background activity was 2004-2008, when Mount St. Helens had a lava dome eruption. Prior to that, it would have been the preceding lava dome eruption at that volcano, which occurred during 1980-1986. Mount St. Helens is by far the most active volcano in the range. It erupts about as often as all of the others combined.
      If you take Mount St. Helens out of the mix, no volcano has been at anything other than "normal," but that's in part because the warning scheme was only introduced in the past few decades. The most recent noteworthy non-Mount St. Helens unrest was in 1975 at Mount Baker, when there were some thermal and gas emissions that suggested the possibility of a deep magmatic intrusion. It didn't get anywhere near the surface, but some of the heat and gas might have been emitted through Sherman Crater. More on that at www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/mount-baker/science/1975-increased-heat-and-signs-activity-mount-baker.
      There is also some uplift occurring at South Sister, but it is occurring at very low rates, and the chemistry of nearby springs suggests that it might be a long-lived process that was detected only recently. So that system is still considered to be at normal levels of activity, although it is closely watched for any significant changes in patterns of deformation and seismicity.

    I appreciate the information and the update. Why are you speaking so fast? Can you slow down and allow what you are saying be comprehended as the valuable information that it is. Are you saying that if one area erupts there could be other areas erupting at the same time. Having 3 or 4 eruptions at one time in Yellowstone, without the whole cadera erupting?

    • @usgs
      @usgs  6 місяців тому +1

      The most common form of eruption in Yellowstone is a lava flow (that the volcanic system only ever explodes is an enduring misconception). There have been a few dozen lava flows since the last huge caldera-forming eruption, and the most recent lava flow was about 70,000 years ago. The latest dating studies indicate that these lava flows occurred in clusters, potentially with multiple lava flows happening simultaneously in different areas within the caldera, as opposed to happening in isolation, spread out over time. You can learn more about this in one of our recent weekly "Caldera Chronicles" articles, which goes into more depth about this study: www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/lotta-lava-new-insights-timing-yellowstones-most-recent-rhyolite-eruptions.

    Why is everyone else telling a different story? Why is the park shut down for the next several years? After all these earthquakes for decades what do we think the outcome will be?

    • @usgs
      @usgs  4 місяці тому +1

      The park is not shut down -- not now nor for the next several years. The park does do seasonal closures, typically in parts of November-December and March-April as the operations change from winter (snowmobile) to summer (cars) and back again. The earthquakes are a consequence mostly of water interacting with existing faults -- you can learn more about that in one of our weekly "Caldera Chronicles" articles (www.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo/news/what-causes-earthquake-swarms-yellowstone).
      Sadly, there is a lot of bad information about Yellowstone online. Despite claims made in a lot of places, there are no indications of impending eruptive activity. All monitoring data (seismicity, deformation, gas emissions, thermal emissions, etc.) remain at background levels.
