  • A MAJOR lab renovation project is underway! Check out my blog for updates as the pieces fall into place:
    thehomescientis...
I'll post a "grand reveal" video when it's all complete, probably in a month or two. Stay tuned!

I really hope you will be releasing videos more often then. I'm going to be doing the same to my lab in the coming months. Good to see you doing it too!

    Can't wait!
I'm actually doing the same thing right now with my lab space. I have a large storage room on the back of my garage. Actually it's two rooms and the smaller one is a perfect space for setting up a fume hood and storage cabinets. It has a door so it can be locked. It has one small window just large enough for ventilation for the fume hood.
So I'm just starting the renovation of that room.
I really need ideas for safely heating and cooling the space. That's the biggest challenge I have. I want to use it year around and not just nice spring and fall days.

Hi, glad to hear you making videos again. I bet you came up with some interesting ideas. In any case, investing money into lab safety is a great thing.
My chemical work area is also located in the room with carpet, wallpaper and some furniture that made of wood. Any chemistry college student would think I am completely out of my mind if I am planning to do any experiments in such conditions unless it is baking soda volcano or acid-base color change. And I would totally agree with this statement.
Remaking the room would cost more than I can afford. However, my desire to explore the chemistry resisted the common sense, and I purchased the hydroponic tent size 1.5 x 1.5m2. Inside, the tent coated with aluminum which is mostly resistant to chemicals due to its oxide layer. Knowing it reacts with some acids, I placed on the bottom of the tent HDPE tray(size of the tent) to catch any spillage and underneath the tent, I placed a thick piece of the rubber sheet for additional chemical and fire resistance.
I made a fume hood, from the large plastic container, extractor fan, carbon filter and some ducting. Also, I assembled an inexpensive automatic fire extinguisher inside of the tent. The tent works absolutely perfect as a fume hood and very affordable.
Also, I am using a smaller version of this tent, for chemical storage. It also assembled with the fire extinguisher and extractor fan. Extractor fan is on the timer, so I set it to activate twice a day for 15 minutes. This ensures, there are no fume build ups in the room. By the way, I came up with this idea after watching breaking bad season 5 :D
Of course, if you have enough money it is best to make things properly.

Well up until now I had the same setup! The tent is a neat idea. Just be careful to not splash HCl on the aluminum! The fume hood is a good idea too. Where do you lead your fumes to? Do either of these things appear in any of your videos? I'd like to check them out.

Yes, I aware of the violent reaction of hydrochloric acid and aluminum. I am alway very cautious, especially with the HCL. I lead all the fumes outside the window. The fumes from the chemical storage tent are extracted through the window vent section. But from the big tent where I do my experiments, I have to open the window and extend the ducting outside manually. Slightly inconvenient but better than drilling a hole through the wall.
You can see my fume hood box in my second video where I do caffeine extraction at 1:00 to 1.05.

hey man, I've seen you around SM forums for awhile. I've started making chemistry videos as well, and I would love some feedback if you get the time.
I'm also starting a home lab creation series soon, as I need to dedicate an area to my work. just neat to see others doing the same

    Hai...
Please any one solve this problem. .
Tallow is solid in room temperature how to liquify it always just like oil. .

Hi. You have some idea how to separate k2o from kcl or how to purify k2o from kcl?

    • @mrhomescientist
      @mrhomescientist  7 років тому

Jozsef Ienciu Wikipedia claims K2O is soluble in ethanol while KCl is only slightly soluble. I'd do more research to confirm that first though. The ethanol should be completely dry, of course.

How do you get chemicals from ACROS organics?

I didn't; I just got the empty bottles from work! Felt like a shame to just throw them away.

Oh I suppose I should. Things always end up taking a lot longer than planned, especially home renovations. It's basically done; I just need to tidy up a bit and find time to make videos again!
