Finding out that Titanfall was running on the source engine is the most shocking thing I learned from this video.
Apex still runs on that heavily modified source today - it even had some of the bunny hopping accidental mechanics in it!
The video description says the game came out in 1994. That would be pretty damn impressive.
Another technically-impressive late release for the 360 was Rise of the Tomb Raider. It is a marvel that it runs and looks as well as it does, given the hardware.
It uses the same engine as its predecessor and roughly looks the same. There is nothing that makes it more marvelous than it's predecessor that also run on Xbox 360. Or are suddenly all cross gen games a technical marvel, even if they are based on previous games running on the same hardware? Is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag on Xbox 360 for example also a technical marvel in your book?
@@cellspeed8682 your comments on this video sound like you have no idea what you're talking about lol
Never played the first game, but I have played the sequel, and man, it’s awesome. Not usually a fan of multiplayer FPS games, but Titanfall 2 is an exception. I actually enjoyed the advanced movement, the multiplayer is fun, and the campaign is shockingly good. I know it’s been said a million times at this point, but we seriously need Titanfall 3 someday.
Titanfall 1 was very good. Never played 2. But COD 3 copied the wall running.
@@EmergencyChannel it really isn’t, few of the characters actually feel like pilots, and there’s obviously no titans
Every time I watch a video about BluePoint, I leave with an all new level of respect for them. By the way, isn’t it crazy how ingenious developers have to be when they’re given such tight hardware budgets? It really brings out the magic in them. Great video MVG. Thank you!
I didn’t even know this was by Bluepoint. Those guys are fucking magicians.
@@samsniper2000 demon souls looks amazing on ps5, but ill play the og version over it no question. so much more character and atmosphere
The fact that this launched four weeks after the X1/PC version is incredible
This is how I played Titanfall 1. I had no idea what I was missing out on cause I felt everything was there..because it was.
i love this The Impossible Port series and hope more are being considered.
Titanfall on the 360 was special. So many fun memories were made from that game.
This is actually how I first played Titanfall. I didn't have an Xbox One at the time, and I wanted to check it out and I remember being very impressed by it. I knew it wasn't running as smoothly as the Xbox One version, but all things considered it was very, very playable and I had a blast with it. I didn't really know who Bluepoint was back then, so the studio name went right over my head at the time, but it totally makes sense that they were the ones who made it work. It's an incredible port.
I remember reading that Eurogamer article when the game came out and being absolutely blown away by Bluepoint's skill and prowess. Bought both versions of the game because of it. What an absolute BEAST of a porting job. Still obsessed with Bluepoint to this day.
man, i used to play Titanfall on the 360 all the time! such a fun game
I've clocked in 2000 hours in Titanfall and it was an amazing game. Shame that TF1 and FT2 are plagued with hackers right now and is completely unplayable.
Titanfall 2 is pretty playable right now. I haven't encountered anybody that I thought was a hacker since I started playing the multiplayer a few months ago
I often wonder what fun do hackers find in cheating in online games? Isn’t it way more fun to play a fair normal match?
Just a heads up mp hacks and matchmaking have been fixed for both games on Xbox at least. major resurgence happening now!
It's going good so far. TF2 is just fine now. I just downloaded it... it was on the PS4 store for discount of $5 these days. I bought the "ultimate edition" or whatever just because I was so pumped to play the game lol. You don't really need to buy the extra feature stuff though. Kinda wish I would've only spent $5, I could probs level my way up just fine without the extra stuff. Anyways, I got into the game just in time too, because I guess the devs (or some mysterious employee) has been updating the game again and apparently now the servers are super stable with new game modes released and working now. I guess it hasn't been playable for a long time because of server issues. It's working so nicely now! No hackers that I can tell! Some people are REALLY good, but as a new player I'm learning how to play better everyday and every single match is a total blast. 10/10. Honestly, this game takes the cake over CoD no joke... and I see why it's so good now... because it was made by the CoD OG's. Didn't even know that. No wonder.
Anyways, jump on it again friend! It's totally worth it... best multiplayer FPS I've played thus far. :D
Man, I remember playing titanfall and having so much fun. And then my Xbox 360 died. Sadness.
@@hunterdavis3003 Hell, that was the 3rd one that broke for me and I was just done. I was so turned off by it all I went back to my ps3 for a few more years.
That visibility calculation stuff was wild. The digital equivalent of standing in every spot possible and writing down what’s visible from there in a massive lookup table.
That's how it already worked in Source, the claim that it was dynamic is false (maybe they changed it to dynamic in the Xbox One TitanFall branch and they mean they reverted it?). Even Quake, which Source has roots in, used this method.
That doesn't sound wild to me at all. That sounds extremely reasonable and has been done even on the PS1 (crash bandicoot). Other engines use this too.
@@DasAntiNaziBroetchen I discovered from another video that Crash levels is just 2d streaming from disc like RE2. WHY
Thank you for covering this! Titanfall is my favorite FPS series and I’ve always been curious about the tech behind the 360 port. It’s such a great example of how working within restrictions can spark ingenuity.
You should talk about the port for Wolfenstein the new order on the 360. It really was impressive as it was 60fps and still had pretty good graphics (despite the textures being a bit more muddy in that version).
The new order had really impressive optimization even on pc, played through it on intel hd 4000 graphics and it was completely playable
id software were always tech wizards even if they don't hit the mark (id tech 5 had issue with high end hardware last I heard)
@@Bazzokapho Older versions of Id Tech have issues on modern high end PC hardware. Quake 4 on PC basically requires a mod to run otherwise you get massive stuttering issues - their support for multi-core CPUs seems like it was tacked on last minute. I think they targeted it for crappy Pentium 4s running at 3.6Ghz when the PC market was shifting to 2Ghz Core Duo chips.
Id tech 5 in general was really impressive, but only if you played on lower end hardware. It's an odd case of higher end hardware holding it back because it's focus on mega textures were optimized for 360 and PS3 in mind, not PC.
That and the port of Rise of the Tomb Raider on 360, if he hasn't already done it. Never got a PS3 release, but the developer really did the impossible and ported it from Xbox One/PS4 to the then 10 yrs old Xbox 360. Absolutely mind blowing! Kinda reminds me of what's currently happening to 8th gen. Still blows my mind I'm going to actually play God of War Ragnarok on my fricking PS4!
Had no idea this existed. Never heard of it until you posted the vid. What an insane amount of work, and looks amazing.

Once again a great video. As someone who's working on a game/sim this series is super insightful and just overall super interesting.
I played this version before I got my Xbox One back then, and it was crazy how good this game worked on the 360.
also the 30fps cap is something noone should use! the increased input lag alone makes it so you are at a sizable disadvantage
Woah, they were developing this in parallel with the XBO release and where just 4 weeks behind. That's seriously impressive!
Say what you want about COD but the people who develop it have always been able to optimise their engines really well and the awesome Titanfall devs carried that ability with them.
A big draw for CoD back then was the performance for sure, most other contemporaries hardly ran at a locked 30 on consoles.
Amazing, great editing work and thanks for linking the interview. Interesting to see absolutely crazy gambles like this then fast forward to today and developers are whining about the Series S being too weak.
Also I love that there's still people playing Titanfall 1 on 360.
I remember my cousins got this port of the game, and while we didn't think much of it, it was a huge difference compared to the Black Ops 3 port. This wouldn't have made any sense to think back then, but the Titanfall Xbox 360 port definitely felt like a new game, whereas the Black Ops 3 Xbox 360 port felt like a pre-alpha demonstration
Thanks for covering this! I was really impressed with this on the 360. I knew there were limitations based on the old hardware compared with videos I was seeing of the Xbone prerelease but it was visually impressive and fun to play. I wished they had patched it to play offline with AI as well but admittedly I wasn't aware that the 360 also used the cloud for AI.
I never realized how much effort went into this version even tho this was the version I played when the first titanfall came out
Came for Titanfall, Stayed for the tech talk.
Great episode as per usual, MVG!
I miss Titanfall 1.
I know 2 improved things a bunch but I preferred how it was all in first person, getting in the mech, getting yanked out and all that.

I played so so many hours of the 360 version of Titanfall. It really was incredibly impressive ! Granted, going to the Xbox 1 version after that was like a whole different experience, but they did a damn good job here.
Even though I've always been team PS and like watching videos about the PS3's unique hardware, I found this very interesting because of the same themes of pushing hardware way beyond what was thought possible, and the ways some games are optimized, since nowadays things like that don't really seem to happen anymore with AAA games not been given enough time to finish the game let alone optimize it, I really find stories like this very interesting
plus hardware is so standardised now that consoles are basically just small PCs now. the ps3 era was the last hurrah for wacky, unique hardware
Imagine if CD Projekt RED did the same with Cyberpunk 2077 and just handed the XOne/PS4 version to a developer and said "Here, downport this."
Great video. Love this series. Posted this in the dev channel at work
I picked up the port out of curiosity and was stunned. I always wondered how this level of quality was achieved on the 360.
Very nice video! Thanks for breaking it down
Seeing the specs compared, this really is insane. Literally 1/16 of RAM available.
TF1 was fantastic. I remember playing on Day #1. Grinded away for a few months and eventually fell onto other titles due to the lack of content. Never played TF2.
You can still play Titanfall 2. It's supported on SeriesX|S & GamePass. (& on PC too obviously.) I still play it like once a week. There's still enough players in the lobby. Just make sure you join the Advocate network. That's where all the players are.

I feel you! I've got a huge backlog of games from PS3 to PS5, including PS Vita. I can't imagine getting to play them all. Gaming was so much fun back in the day with no responsibilities. Now, it's hard to play without having real life stuff coming to mind and stressing me out while playing, not to mention having a short attention span.
Played TF1 on the 360 mainly because I wasnt going to jump into the X1 next gen, but rather the PS4.
So the port was a good idea to play on the 360 before doing that.
It was a very impressive port, featuring everything the game had to offer with some slight downgrades but nothing detrimental to the gameplay and enjoyment of it.
I love hearing about the in depth details regarding these obscure seemingly impossible ports 👍
Man I love your content. Always great and full of information.
This was incredibly interesting! Similar to this, I would love to see a vid on impossible ports that were unsuccessful!
Used to play this game a lot back in the day. It was the only 8th gen launch title that actually felt "next gen" to me, something new.
There was this time when microsoft made the game free to try during e3 2015 I believe, and the population jumped from like 10k to like 100k immediately. It was glorious. The skill jump due to the movement tech was so huge that I managed to go three games in a row without dying even ONCE. Top of the leaderboards each time. The game had this really cool mechanic where if your team lost you could evacuate on the helicopter, so in one of these games my team lost, but I still didnt die a single time. That was one of my favorite moments in gaming, I felt like a war hero or something. I've never been nearly that good at an online shooter before or since, that's how much of a difference being good at the movement was. Now I feel all nostalgic and shit lol
@@TheAbbeyoftheEveryman i have a feeling you were so bad that YOU thought the bots were players and are so dumb that you assume everyone else also made this assumption at some point
Hi there, I wanted to say that’s a wonderful vid.
I also wanted to speak to the changes that Bluepoint did. Their changes from dynamic PVS and lighting to precomputed visibility / lightmaps is much closer to the unmodified DX9 build of Source that Valve used for their X360 titles- so basically I would assume they pulled out Respawn’s Xbox1 solution and perhaps updated the engine with a streamlined precomputed vis and lightmaps.
Valve used a massive CPU farm and had a program called VMPI to share the compile process across all the machines for their precomputed PVS system (vvis) and their lightmap compiler (vrad). I believe Respawn moved to real-time solution so basically Bluepoint was returning the engine back to its dx9 roots.
An amazing video about one of my favorite games, such an interesting look into a development history I never knew was so complicated.
Bluepoint showing everyone why their technical masters. Did not know how little of a resolution difference there was between the two. Freaking amazing.
These kinds of amazing feats of programming would never get the exposure they deserve from mainstream gaming journalists.
This is shockingly clever. Great work on the part of BP!
Awesome video, more episodes like these please 😀
Due to data limits where I was living I didn't pick up an Xbox One until about 2017. So this is actually the version of Titanfall I owned and played first. I didn't even touch the Xbox One version until much much later. Honestly I didn't feel like I was missing much - it looked and ran great! Still have a massive soft spot for it too. The visual identity is still Titanfall but something about it is very distinct.
I never played the original, but wow just hearing about the impossible task Bluepoint had in front of them and the fact they smashed it is super impressive. This is just one of the reasons they're such a big deal. Loved the video

I remember playing TF on the 360 and thinking wow I can't believe this runs and looks so good on the 360.
Considering it was made in the source engine it explains why it scales so well
Absolutely genius and fascinating when you think of the sheer amount of brains and utmost sheer development talent that was required when they all put their heads together. And of course the super experienced 360 engineers who probably helped guide what was actually possible. This to me is probably the greatest software achievement - like ever. And a brilliantly put together video by the way 👌🏻
Your new studio setup is looking pretty great! A bit backlit though. But loving the Mini Cute arcade!
"Yeah, we just remade the entire game basically lmao"
Bluepoint keeps impressing me more and more. Their work lately has also been impressive, but their impossible ports really take the cake. They really remind me of Panic Button and their Switch ports, also impressive works of art
Panic Button ports have nowhere near the same level of optimisation and custom-tailoring to hardware. Their way of working is: lower everything as much as you need to hit 30 fps, give the game a wide dynamic resolution scaling window to clean-up the framerate and ship it.
It became obvious when Panic Button weren't up to the task of porting Doom Eternal to Switch, even though they were working on it in parallel to id software, who handled other versions internally. As a result, the Switch release must have been delayed and id software needed to send their people over to Panic Button to help the studio finishing the game - they were not able to do so on their own.
I do not really know why people hold their work in such high regard. Their only impressive project was bringing Rocket League to Switch an that's only because it uses UE3, which doesn't support Switch hardware natively. Apex Legends plays bad on Switch, the game isn't pushing any limits in terms of technological complexity, but they made it a choppy, blurry mess. Wolfenstein: Youngblood is atrocious. Warframe is awful. Doom and Wolfenstein TNC are only passable.
Bluepoint are artists, Panic Button's work is cheap and nasty in comparison.
Rewriting engine components is not even "remade the entire engine", let alone "remade the entire GAME".
These modified Source engine games are super interesting. I've always loved the Source engine, even learned some Hammer. I'm hoping we see some more Source 2 games soon.

This port was really good muddy textures but ran great I loved it. And I can’t believe black ops 3 came out around the same time and on the 360 and it ran and looked horrible especially compared to the titanfall port.
Crazy how they use optical, HDD, and network bandwidth to get it all running. Talk about firing on all cylinders! These videos are really cool, but I feel like they're missing the developer's firsthand accounts. Would you be able to incorporate developer interviews going forward?

Had no idea about this. Thanks!
BluePoint never fails to amaze me. I had no idea that all this went on with titanfall. I thought it was a regular cross generation game but damn was i wrong. Incredible job
Definitely loved Titanfall, I spent a surprising amount of time playing this port when it came out because I was kind of dumbfounded over how well it played. One of the oddities was touched up on here, where the game couldn't be installed to a hard drive from a disc. The technical reasons were mentioned here, but I remember Bungie had a notice against installing Halo 3 to the hard drive for presumably the same reasons Bluepoint avoided by blocking disc installs. Bungie's main issues for Halo 3 were saying it could increase load times and cause other performance issues.
In terms of actually playing the game, it was a pretty loyal port of the game to older hardware. Visuals obviously took a hit, the sounds was compressed many times down to super crunchy levels, but the oddest benefit? The matches on Xbox 360 loaded in noticeably faster than the Xbox One or even PC counterparts! Always thought that final detail was funny.
I exclusively played Titanfall on my 360E! Man it was so much fun. The Aussie servers were a tiny community too. So good!
Amazing work these guys did. Thanks.
Its really a shame when they make online games without a way to host a private server, that just makes the game have a countdown to the time the devs pull the plug, and we the players cant get to experience the games anymore, this is why I like Valve still today, they make games and they leave them very neglected afterwards but, they release a way to host custom servers, and to make mods to them, so the community can still make new content, and if the oficial serves die or are hacked we can host private servers to keep playing.
Too bad respawn nor Microsoft did anything to bring this IP to the front of mainstream gaming (and protect it from cheaters). It had SO MUCH potential, and it was the most fun I've had with a FPS game in years

it's absolutely insane how Bluepoint got TF running so well (or even running at all) on the XB360, but it kinda makes me wonder what they could have done if they decided to port their XB360 port forward to the XB1 even if only to learn from it
Bluepoint are masters are remakes and remasters, just look at the vita port of MGSHD. But i wonder if it was worth all the time and effort into the 360 version unless it sold a ton, i wasn't even aware it came out on 360 until now.
I never had an xbox console, so I wasn't aware of a port like that, very interesting, makes me wonder if other games from that era was also that kind of port. I hope you cover the indiana jones and the infernal machine n64 port in the future, because unlike factor 5's star wars 64 games, indiana jones is a pc game, I've read that the port mantains a solid 30fps and even has fog disabled to mantain the pc version draw distance, the game looks gorgeous.
Another great video!
Never gave much attention to titanfall because all these fps all look the same to me, but I recognize the port was amazing.
I'd also love to see a video comparing both forza horizon 2 versions. They're different games, but the 360 one was awesome too.
Completed both versions of FH2 and I can say that the 360 version was not good. Looked worse than the original Horizon somehow, and had many collision glitches in which your car would crash with invisible bumps and walls in the middle of the road.
@@Pedro_The_Neco I aware of these issues, since it was a rushed project handled to Sumo Digital.

I still don’t understand why IW/Treyarch started putting out such bad PC ports when Steam was starting to blow up in popularity. The ports for previous games were somewhat barebones but man the ones from the 2010s were starting to diminish
@@5persondude It's because they weren't done in house. They were outsourced with tight deadlines. The story of pretty much every bad PC port.
