Tapping the rail tops with a screwdriver does some magic - Jumps most of the loose bits off the sleepers and saves doing it manually. Nice tidy job however! Sand also worked better than I expected..

pipettes are good - I got myself some eyedroppers from a pharmacy... for free!! I find syringes can push out the glue mixture with quite a bit of force, which can push the ballast to places you don't want it! I've also found that adding a drop or two of indian ink can help discretely precolor the ballast, so less weathering may be required later.

For sidings, I have been using dark tile grout to represent the ash, etc. (The powder type of course)
Looks pretty good, especially with a bit of overpainting for weathering.

Yes, I've heard good things about tile grout too. Trouble is I can only seem to get it in huge bags, which is wasteful and expensive when I only have a small area to use it on. Where do you get yours?

I've got about 2.5kg of mid-grey tile grout left over from doing our conservatory floor. You're welcome to use it if you don't mind darkening it first.

@@FrontingtonandBackwoodsRailway Lol I'm in Australia - The big hardware stores sell 1.5Kg for about 5quid but the postage would kill you :)
