Micheal is such a great story teller. This kind of break from The normal cruising, maximum velocity, or discussion vlogs adds a lot of diversity and intrigue to what you guys do. Luv you guys and your blogs! Cheers from Florida!👍😁
If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it! Same as the canal itself, you always remember when complaining of industry related noises that that is the reason the canal is there in the first place. Excellent job Mike
Incredibly interesting! Michael is quite a good narrator! We've heard stories from others about the bloody steps, but nobody went into such great detail about what actually happened, so thank you for clarifying. Hope this message finds you both well and soon this lockdown will be over for you! Yay! Take care of yourselves and give George a scratch under the chin for us! Tim and Tammie
I loved this vlog! I am a huge mystery fan especially English ones and really enjoyed Michael’s story. I really enjoy seeing the canals. We are in Canada but my husband is a Brit. We have rented narrow boats a couple of times and hope to do it again, soon. Thanks for all the hard work putting these vlogs together.
Obviously there’s a new channel ready to go: Minimal list Murder Mysteries. (Also, “Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner, but he knew it wouldn’t last...”)
I liked doing one murder mystery, and if we find some other oddities like this could do another, but spent so much time reading and searching to fill this one I can’t believe people do this true crime stuff for a living! M
This was fantastic! Think you might have hit on something here. Michael's a great storyteller even when there isn't a story (ie. Michael's rambling wisdoms that usually get cut out till the end. Love 'um!!) ;-) As someone from the states that loves anything English (history, literature, architecture, the canals!), this was a wonderful addition to your vlogs showing the beautiful countryside. Hope you'll continue with the little history lessons. Thanks for the vlog. Went well with my morning coffee. ;-)
Another interesting and informative video, I loved the local history story. I find stories like that quite intriguing, and how different it would be today with the forensic testing available.
It is fascinating. Though, having once convicted a man of murder, it’s amazing how far forensics actually are from the impressions we’ve gotten from TV and movies. In a real trial it turns out it’s all inference and assumptions and can be just as biased towards the politically popular outcome, but with a CSI stamp of approval. M
Well done Michael and Jo, This was a very interesting video you've made. Reading all the comments I would say that you have both stumbled onto a hit, "Death by the Canals". The stories told by Michael were very well told and very enjoyable. I know that Jo didn't look like she was contributing very much but I'm sure she had a big input. We always watch your videos and enjoy them. These side stories are great, let's hope you do more of them. Ian and Angie.
She contributes loads of work editing my ramblings, as well as camera work while often tied to George (who was quite bored and has no idea how to handle a clapper)! I’ll do more if I find more murders and other foul deeds! M
I actually bought a book out of Poundland called Death on the Waterways by Allan Scott Davies. I haven't had a proper read of it yet so as to say if it's any good. I put it in my car glovebox for when I'm picking my daughter up from work. I seem to always arrive early as traffic is unpredictable so I have a ten minute read as I wait.
@@MinimalList I just looked on Amazon and the book I got for a quid from Poundland is almost £8 but it has a handful of 5 stars. Also on Amazon theres another book, Murder on the Oxford Canal by Faith Martin and the lead character in the book lives on a boat in Thrupp. If you pay for Amazon Prime so as to get the TV and your parcels delivered next day for free, the Murder on the Oxford Canal is free for Kindle or the kindle app on iPhone etc and even the charge for non -prime people is very low. Never one to pass up a freebie, I'm reading it now.
Michael is a very good storyteller. And there is a mystery book by Colin Dexter (sorry, don't remember the title) that delves into an alternate solution to the woman's murder. Interesting reading if you get the chance. Thanks for sharing.
You obviously had to do a lot of editing, but the result was a really excellent history mystery. Thank you. And skew arches are lovely! Hope you visited Shugborough Hall...
Thank you so much for your piece to camera today. A lot of hard work was undertaken in your research. Having lived in Rugley in 63/4/5 I never saw a canal or heard about the murders. Your reward for your piece to camera is the lovely weather you will be having. Roger
What a great vlog. You should do a series on the history of the towns you stop in, of course it would mean you would have to go back over the canals you have already done. Thank you Michael.
I've been looking through the vlogs for a while now to find where you passed through where I live, and found it unexpectedly. The history lesson was good but please don't call Rugeley a 'murderous' (or murderer's) town. I'm an incomer, having lived here for only 40 years. The canal is a row of houses away - we can hear passing boats but not see them. The local branch of the IWA has adopted the section near the Bloody Steps and work parties are held to keep it looking smart. A few years ago a new stretch of towpath was laid between the aqueduct and the new bridge carrying the bypass. I married a Rugeley lass and we love the place. Please come again.
Been thru Rugeley many times so delighted to hear Michael's investigations. The tale of the unfortunate lady carried up the 'bloody steps' became the basis for an Inspector Morse story called 'The wench is dead' set on the Oxford Canal.
These local tales are fascinating and well worth the time devoted to them. And who doesn't love a little scandal now and then. Michael the beauty blogger? I'm ready for that. As the possessor of a rather uncontrollable beard I could use some validation. Straggly hair forever! Finally, as a computer user I've always assumed that programming involved criminal intent... 😎
Heh, not much criminal intent in my case... I’m working on building out my blog so I can teach people the finer points of Python and document my forays into other languages. Dead boring, really, but needed for me to find work. Major distraction from my beauty blogging though! M
Brilliant M great investigation very interesting. Well told. Hope you Jo and George have a great Easter. Hope the weather's picking up as we are flying to the UK next week for our Daughter's Wedding. Maybe see you on the canal.
Keep an eye out for us, we’ll be generally around Authersley Junction, nearish Wolverhampton! Looking forward to Easter, as it always brings a slew of hire boats full of kids amped up on chocolate! M
Awesome video love the history behind the area you were in if you have a more time please add the history to each video of the location of where you are at.
Heh, I’d like to, but there’s too much history and much of it is pretty mundane... but we will try to add more whenever we find stories that send me down the rabbit hole! M
I wouldn’t mind lecturing, but without Jo editing me I’m all tangent and no point! We do wonder about it, but the trail went cold as none of the previous owners are available save the most recent, who had no idea. M
Wonderful vlog, really enjoyed the Michael Investigates story of William Palmer. Social history stories of places around the canals add a whole new element. Like a little extra icing on the cake so to speak, I hope there will be more if the opportunity presents.
I’m fascinated by historical oddities like these, so no doubt there will be other rabbit holes. I did a bit on the. Battle of Bosworth way back, so something will strikes my fancy once more! M
That was a really interesting vlog. Thank you for all the time and effort you put in to your work. We have visited Rugeley Tesco a couple of times during our narrowboat holidays but never visited the town. It is great to hear the stories behind the towns. Thank you xx
Aussum video Mike. Thought the history lesson was terrific, if you're so inclined I think that it's a great idea. A lot of other vlogers are all the same same . This video has been tremendously interesting. Thanks guys
I like to add little bits of history, but usually it’s just little bits about battlefields and what not when we happen across them. I’ll keep an eye out for more bits to ramble on about in the future! M

What a fabulous Wednesday morning! I wake up to find my favorite Canal crew is now dabbling in Intrigue and Murder my other favorite thing to watch on UA-cam. A little help for your future makeup blog Michael - History of Rouge/Blush - www.aol.com/article/lifestyle/2013/02/28/history-rouge-or-you-know-it-blush/20504841/
I liked the stories of murders. I live in Moscow, Idaho and will most likely never get to travel to England. I enjoyed seeing more than Just the Canal, Toe path, and the levees. I would like to see a couple of minutes in each episode of the historical sites. Thank you for a great video.
We include some when we find it, though it’s usually just me rambling a bit rather than a distinct story. I’ll talk to Jo about adding more, though you can imagine that in many places we stop the history is “and then our Mabel bought a horse, this was before the war, ...”. But when we find something notable, we’ll try and add some more. M
You might think about putting together a book of canal directions and add history Story's along the way. Would sell local and for the history story's over in America, where I'm now in Okla.
Heh, might do, though quite a lot of local color already exists in the Nicholson’s Guides to the UK Waterways... though they didn’t much mention the poisoner. M
fabulous info Michael. There were editing times when I thought of Max Headroom though :). I can't wait to see what you make of Buck Ruxton and the Pendle Witches when you get to the Lancaster :)
The editing gets a bit hard with ones like this, where I often flub a line and Jo needs to cut it out (I can only do so many takes!). There’s also a couple of dozen George barks that need clipping out! M
Brilliantly Investigated Michael, what a great vlog, really interesting history of the area where you were and well explained as usual. Old journalism hasn't changed much but I bet modern crime detection technology would have nailed Palmer anyway, just saying. All the best Stevie
It’s a bit difficult saying what modern forensics would come up with... the case for tetanus is as good as the case for strychnine, given what’s known from his symptoms and the post-mortem. Much was made in the press of the day about the possibility of him doctoring the stomach contents, but short of having flushed and washed them with several different organic solvent baths, it’s unclear how he could have done so via the small holes reported in the bladder sealing the jars. Strychnine isn’t very soluble in water or alcohol, and most other solvents he could have introduced would have been quite detectable, even by the rudimentary chemistry of the day. The symptoms of cook don’t include complaints about a bitter taste, but do include burning of the throat, but only the former is associated with strychnine. Also Cook was said to have vomited quite a lot, which actually isn’t associated with acute strychnine poisoning. So I wouldn’t be too sure. M
That was superb; thank you! One of your best-ever vlogs and much appreciated. Might I suggest (and this may help you) that you split your vlog into two next time, as there were two very distinct themes. Also, your lapel-mike makes a tremendous difference - the quality and level of sound were far worse on the stern, as opposed to around the town. Mike investigates was excellent but we should not forget camerawoman and supervisor, Jo and whoever edits these vids (Jo?). Just because You Tube's greatest make-up expert fronts the video (and researches murder extensively) never forget the woman behind the great man. Seriously, a brill edition and really enjoyed - thank you both, again. PS don't forget gratuitous George shots :)
Thanks! We thought about splitting it in two, but the cruise seemed to tie the two stories together. Jo edits and does basically all the work, she’s amazing! We’ll do more when we find more horrors by the towpath! M
@@MinimalList I allways like to get the history of a place. It does not have to be dramatically or outstanding. If there is a story of the past it will bring quality to the present!
I try to mention bits here and there, but it’s got to really catch my attention to get the full treatment. But I’ll talk to Jo about including more, as it’s obviously popular! M
Will have to share this with members in our local creative writers group, murder mystery authors are always looking for inspiration, you know how they are.
Murder most foul..... I see spring is breaking out in England. Ohio is doing same, though we've taken some serious storm damage. The next town south had a f2 tornado tear through it . No damage here though. Expecting another storm front soon. Definitely spring in Ohio, the neighbors got their boat out of my dad's barn last weekend and had her hauled up to Lake Erie for the summer. Nice video and Thank you for sharing!
Luckily spring here does not bring tornadoes - incidentally the reason I started trying to convince my parents to get us the heck out of Oklahoma before I’d gained the power of speech - glad to hear you’ve not bourn the brunt of one of those! M
Fantastic Michael investigates I hope we will have more....Perhaps what does happen to all of George's balls which seem to disappear at regular intervals..looking very spring like now and a lot more traffic from fair weather boaters.
I think George has more patience with the ball balanced on his nose than Mr. Palmer had with seemingly hidden skulduggery after the fact inquires found he just could not stay away - like a bee to honey -- oh my what a tangled web
He’s certainly an odd character who seemed to be dead set on casting himself in an odd light. Fascinating story! And yeah, George is pretty good with the patience as long as he’s SURE he gets the reward eventually! M
Well this certainly gives you a USP that distinguishes you from the plethora of other canal videos on UA-cam. It will be interesting to see if this style change makes any significant difference to your views and subscribers. Looking forward to the future!
Heh, well it’s not a permanent style change... we hit upon a strange story and I went down a rabbit hole. I’ll go down more, but I can never predict them! M
@@MinimalList Aw, shame, it had all of the signs of a whole new tangent to explore. Never can have too many strings to ones bow... Still, looking forward to the next one, there must be stories to be told when you get to the the Northern towns and cities.
Hi. Electric boat Abigail here. (We met in Perry Barr locks.) If you haven't reached Autherley Junction yet our paths may cross again, if you would like a more in-depth look at the system.
Hi Ian, would love that! We’re still a few miles north of there, a bit south of Gailey. Didn’t see you coming down from Penkridge, so are you closer to Wolverhampton? M
Good to see you’re proving the old truism of canal life - you tend to meet other boats at bridges, on sharp bends, on sharp bends with bridges, at narrows or when manoeuvring across the canal 😂 You did well to move from the town centre location to avoid the errant youth or ‘little s#@ts’ as us locals call them. Alas the lack of local law enforcement staff makes them quite fearless.

fabulous info Michael.
Also I’ll read up on the Pendle witches! M
Another great Vlog you two...How anybody could give you a thumbs down boggles the mind! Anyway....Thank You Again!! Mark
We think they’re just trying to keep us honest! M
Bring to mind any modern day prosecutions? And non prosecution?
loved the history lesson.
@@MinimalList Thanks again Michael, really very interesting. Stevie
Well done! Love the history and the mystery! More please! Thanks.
As we come upon more murder and intrigue! M
Great Vlog. Interesting to hear the local history like to see more. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! Will add more where it gets murdery!
Fantastic video. Great story. Good ressearch. What can I say more?
Oh yes!
Bring more of that kind :-)
Thanks! We’ll keep an eye out for more murder and history!
After 27:44, hey, there's an idea for a fictional industry for your model railway, a mascara mine.
Heh, add that to the other nonsense in my brain and I dare say it’d be quite a railway! Especially the rocket powered bit! M
Will have to share this with members in our local creative writers group, murder mystery authors are always looking for inspiration, you know how they are.
Please do! M
Absolutely wonderful, my dears!
'Michael Investigates' would be an extra bonus to your already super vlogs!
All love, and best wishes, Claire, Berlin
Thanks! We’ll try to do more, when I find another rabbit hole! M

Very interesting story.....thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! M
very enjoyable stories well done eep thm coming ted
Thanks! Will do when we find more murder! M
Wonderfully engaging thank you
Thanks! M
Great stuff guys ,interesting and fun . Glad George has another ball . well cheers from Oz and looking forward to your next vlog .
He’ll always have another, as long as we can afford them and he hasn’t exhausted the world supply! M
Ahh, the Mystery of the Dog’s Balls. Now that would make an episode! M
Very, very good; more, more! A pleasant voice and nice American accent.
Thanks! I’ll have a fallback career as a murder mystery presenter!
There will be, that’s for sure! I wouldn’t mind doing them as some sort of standalone series, but will have to think about it. M
@@MinimalList We are coming the other way. Aiming to get to Autherley Friday and spend the weekend there.
I’ll let Jo know. It would be nice to get a better look. Should be arriving around Friday as well. M
@@MinimalList We are tied just south of the junction bridge.
That was really interesting, thanks for sharing the history 🙂
Thanks for listening to me prattle on! M
Loved the history and murder info. Very interesting.
Thanks! M
Brilliant. Loved the Michael Investigates. Fascinating. Wish you had been my History teacher .
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! M
More Tangents Please, great fun.
All we’re doing is taking tangents! That’s canal life in one! M
Good to see you’re proving the old truism of canal life - you tend to meet other boats at bridges, on sharp bends, on sharp bends with bridges, at narrows or when manoeuvring across the canal 😂
You did well to move from the town centre location to avoid the errant youth or ‘little s#@ts’ as us locals call them. Alas the lack of local law enforcement staff makes them quite fearless.
The main miscreant didn’t seem that fearless... ran like buggery when I stuck my beard out the window! M
