    • @alextrotta796
      @alextrotta796 3 роки тому +33

      Yea, his current system is wack. The amount of time and resources he's going to have to continue putting into it is probably more than it would take to implement this new design, considering it obsoletes the height modules entirely.

    • @Syrahl696
      @Syrahl696 3 роки тому +21

      @@oskarthompson3789 The trouble is, I'm not sure he can. He's highlighted the problem before where the marbles settle in a different way in the lanes each time, due to the lanes having to be wider than the marbles to allow them to roll. So unless he has height correction right under the divider (which I have seen one design for, not sure if it would fit and it would be a lot more fiddly), it may well be impossible to ensure a consistent marble height.

      Martin's design looks better when viewing the machine from the front, which is the expected viewing position. Essentially the new design idea places a wall in front of the marbles. An observer in front of the machine will not see the marbles rolling along and falling into various channels.

  • @jordanlarson8789
    @jordanlarson8789 3 роки тому +428

    Martin PLEASE incorporate that design for the divider that can handle different marble heights. I can already imagine the frustration of having to machine and carry with you ALL of those height modules all the time, with endless tinkering and trial and error for each channel. This suggested design could vastly simplify as well as provide more resilience to the machines functioning.

    The "constant radius" marble divider would eliminate so many issues: present and future. I know how much you've invested (continue to invest) into controlling marble lane heights. Here is a solution that nullifies that need altogether.

    The new marble divider design is just so much better, combined with the pressure management system you wouldnt need any adjustments. It would likely take more time to adjust all the channels than just to make the new better designs. I use that in electronics a lot, and it basically means that once something reaches a threshold and 'trips', the threshold to then 'un-trip' is lower than whatever force originally called it to trip. It makes transitions between states very well defined and definite.

    I go through this approach daily in my software development work. You do something that works, next week it doesn't work because something else has changed so you put a bandaid on it and move on. Two months later you realize your bandaid fell off and something else isn't working. You do a whole new design and it works great now. The thing to remember is you can't always predict what problems will arise from a solution that solves all of your current problems. Future problems will occur and you either put a bandaid on it, or you reengineer it to be better. I love seeing the physical process to what I do in software every day. Even if it means 10 designs, I love the iteration process this machine goes through.

    Regarding the pressure relief system (6:36): both Rossero and you incorporate fully threaded fasteners as a marble stop pin in your designs. The design then slides components - either the marble or the moving mechanism - along the thread. This is a source of friction and / or system noise x 38 channels. Consider substituting a smooth surface where any item translation / sliding occurs. Some suggestions: partially threaded shafts (www.mcmaster.com/97042A158/), a clevis pin with the head captured in an internal cavity or slot (www.mcmaster.com/93131A380/), or perhaps a threaded standoff to cover the screw threads (www.mcmaster.com/93090A665/)

SOOOOOO many times I have cad drew an entire assembly to start building it, laser cutting 3d printing cnc routing, even manual machining, to realize that the scale I've drawn details in is completely unrealistic, in this project Martin can bring the parts into his total assembly for a much better idea of scale but like I'm working on a custom quadcopter right now, and I keep having to remind myself that the body is only 30mm wide, and I'm not going to be able todo any work inside the body, so everything I design must be able to be soldered/assembled outside of the body and then bolted in, but in cad on my computer screen, the body looks like its 4 inches across... I hope you get the idea, it is a very important part of the process to make things you can hold in your hands, we do it with the laser cutter a lot just out of cardboard so we can get an idea of the fit and feel of a design...

Can an artist call themselves an artist if they cannot expand off of a functioning base point? Martin is also showing a deep desire (in my opinion) to complete a working instrument. It is clear he wants to reach that goal. If he wants that done in a reasonable amount of time, he needs to focus on what works. Of course, he only set a goal, no timeline.
