What is prefelt? How do you use it?

Prefelt may be handmade or commercially prepared and is an excellent option for adding decoration to felt. Join me for this short video where I share just a little about what it actually is and how to use it for surface decoration.

If I use prefelt as a base, for example a baby blanket, do I still calculate shrinkage the same?

Prefelt tends to shrink evenly in both directions and comes in different thicknesses and also fibre combinations. A lightweight wool/silk blend will shrink more than the same weight of pure wool. Overall, I'd say that for me one layer of medium weight prefelt equals two relatively fine layers of wool fibre but you need to experiment for yourself as I don't know what yours is like or how thickly you lay your fibre!

Can I use prefelt as the basis of a wet felt bowl?

If commercial prefelt is made using needles, could you needle felt pieces into prefelt sheets thereby eliminating soap and water?🤔

You can certainly needle felt into prefelt sheets BUT the prefelt sheets are only partially felted, not suitable to wear as they are. They still need to be shrunk so you need to wet felt them to finish the process.
