Meat Goats or Dairy Goats

Discussing the reasons that we chose meat goats over dairy goats to start our farm. Some is personal preference, some is based on our profit goals. Do you have a preference for dairy or meat goats? Tell us in the comments.

If you drink goats milk raw (unpasteurized) then you can’t tell the difference between goats milk or cows milk. If you pasteurize it, it’s undrinkable! And that’s unfortunate. I have been drinking goats milk since the 60’s because cows milk really hurt my stomach. So I have to drink goats milk raw. I just have to be extremely clean with handling the milk and my equipment. Plus keeping my doe’s clean. I am in the Pacific Northwest and when I didn’t have goats a few years ago I tried to get goats milk from other goats farmers and they were asking $20. A gallon. So that was out of the question! So there was a few years I didn’t have milk. I have a few dairy goats. I raise La Mancha’s, they are gentle and affectionate. Their milk is fabulous, I use it for myself, cheese, soaps, baking, cooking, candy, and raising chickens, puppies, pigs, kids, plus I have a few elderly friends who love the goat products.

Thanks for the comment. I think we're going to have to give it another shot for sure! I don't think it works for our business model, but that doesn't mean we couldn't have a little to drink. Especially if the kids become interested in it. (I'm fine with them milking goats 😂).
