ABANDONED In Storage For 40 Years! Rare 1955 Chevrolet Nomad Will It Run Again?

  • The most I have ever spent on a car. BY FAR
Now that's out of the way, let's get to the fun stuff. This 1955 Chevrolet Nomad was at a local towing auction and I just had to have it! I rolled the dice and won the auction.
This Nomad was the pride and joy of some old timer for 40 plus years. He made it his own over the years by collecting parts, changing trim and re-doing the interior to his tastes.
Ultimately the car sat in storage for many many years and the bill was not paid, so the car went up for auction. It's a bit of a sad story to see a guy lose his car BUT we are going to give it a great home!
How should we approach this build? Typically DD Speed Shop? Maybe try to preserve what's left? It's only time and money right?

Yes please we want to see more, much more of you keeping her as an original 1950s time machine. No hood scoop hot rod mods on this sweet baby, just love, care, roof and hood debonking and Turtle Wax out of the original tin!
The interior and electrical windows and seats are amazing - superb to see on a 1950’s dream machine. The blue and white colour scheme is so 1950s summer holiday ice cream flavour… Jeez she’s to lust over. Bridget Bardot never looked so good. 🥰

I once had a 35 Chevrolet sedan body that had the roof totally jumped on and caved in. I took a floor jack with a 4 x 4 and a 16“ x 36“ piece of half-inch plywood up against the roof and slowly jacked it all up. It was amazing how easily it all popped back out. if you’re careful, yours should easily pop out real nice with a few taps along the crease. Without even hurting the paint. Try it when you get the seat out. Pull down that headliner and try it. Good luck. Smitty.

Dan and Dani, I had a thought… Your new Nomad is so special, such a very beautiful survivor that she deserves something special. Once you have restored her mechanically could you take her on a road trip to Alberta and team up with my other favorite uber talented loonies at Cold War Motors? I would give my eye teeth to see the Master of master panel molders, melders and beaters help you to ease the bumps and creases out of the roof and hood of your glorious car. It would make such a terrific two hander bringing your two excellent channels together. This is not to knock your own growing panel bashing talent, but Scott simply works pure magic.
Just a thought Dan, Scott Newson is such a talent that your Nomad could only be the winner.

That chrome part you found sorta attached to the 8 track, is a 2 piece under the dash mount that you attach to the 8 track so you can pull the slide free and take it into your home to prevent theft. Some had a small lock on top.

Easy way to tell if it's an original 1955, 265 is to look down and see if it has a standard spin on oil filter. It it doesn't have an oil filter, it's a '55. If it was ordered with the oil filter option, it's a remote canister filter that hangs off the side like the old Stovebolt I6's. 1956 they cast in the oil filter boss on the SBC and it stayed there for ever after that.
Great Find Man! and it's in good hands for sure!

    • @Zero-Fox-Garage
      @Zero-Fox-Garage 10 місяців тому +3

It has a spin on filter you could see when he was messing around underneath with the starter. Definitely a later block, and has some corporate GM blue on the block too. Might be a 305 with the powerpack heads bolted onto it...but we won't know til Dan runs the numbers on it. At any rate, not a 265.

But it's also why I love Chevy's, everything is so compatible with everything else, that all the VIN tag will tell you what was supposed to be in there, not what someone put in there to keep it on the road... lol@@Zero-Fox-Garage

If it truly just needs a patch panel for the floor, do a Fitzee style "cut and butt" and it will be more or less undetectable. A full floor pan will still have front, rear, and side blends to the original car that the car guys will recognize, and ask you just how bad the whole floor was. Keep the fix simple for a first rate refurbishment, almost a restoration. Now if the inner and outer rockers are more or less a mess, then maybe the full floor pan will have the bigger long term return. But like Danni says, if you take the whole interior out, it could be a big challenge to get it back together. I've seen you do it, so whatever you decide will work out. Good score, and best of luck!

Dan, that 'Acme Thunderer' whistle is a relic itself! They are usually chrome plated brass based on the Original Flight Jacket Whistle as worn by RAF & USAAF pilots and aircrews during World War II. Referred to as the “Ditch” Whistle, at times as it was used by pilots who had been shot down in the Ocean to attract attention from passing ships.

Don't worry too much about the gas cap. Several years ago, I had a 65 chevy truck with a locking gas cap. Parked the truck for a while and I lost the key to the gas cap over the winter. I also had bought a bag full of keys at an Estate Sale around that time, mostly old skeleton keys, right around the time I was wanting to start driving the truck again. There were three or four key rings full of various car/truck keys in with the rest and one had a key with GAS stamped on it. My wife was standing there beside me and I said "Hey, look at this". Tried it and much to my amazement it unlocked the cap. My wife is startled and says so you bought that whole bag of keys, knowing this one key would work. No not at all. It was just pure dumb luck but I had the same thing happen to a trailer lock I was 100% sure I would have to cut off. You never know. You might get lucky!!

A neighbor up the street from us in Oak Ridge, TN had a totally cherry Nomad just like this. When I got my driver's license in 1969, my younger brother and I BEGGED and BEGGED and BEGGED our dad to buy it for us, but he wouldn't do it, saying "I don't wanna work on another old car". Over the years we've enjoyed reminding him of what that "old car" is now worth.

The valve cover bolts are straight across, not staggered, so that makes those heads 1959 or newer. Look for engine code on passenger side block deck pad to identify year, engine size, and application. Nice car!

The ‘55 is may favorite Nomad and arguably the best looking one. To find a Nomad in this condition is a rare thing indeed. I believe that this may be the first tri-five that you have with a complete headliner😊! The color of the steering wheel and dash lead me to believe that the original color may have been cream or brownish. The spare parts that came with it is a treasure trove and could take the edge off of your initial investment.

Omg! I was just scanning the internet on 55 Nomads. My dad had a 55 same color. I even have a picture of me and my dad with it as a baby in 1966. He had it from new and when he died, the widow sold it. Nope, she wasn't my mother and me and my half brothers and sister were depressed on that as we all grew up in that car. My father passed in 1990 and i was just thinking of him 2 weeks ago, which is why i was looking to see what was out there currently. Watching your video and seeing your car, just brings back memories

  • @jimcollier1938

Great purchase Dan! If your car was Factory 3-Speed Overdrive equipped, you'll find an "Overdrive" T-Handle under the dash, and a plunger switch behind the accelerator pedal. The Overdrive T-handle serves as a mechanical lockout to prevent the OD unit from engaging. The plunger below the accelerator pedal breaks the OD circuit' power to allow the transmission to drop back into straight drive if a "passing gear" for more power is desired. I acquired a 3-speed with overdrive and retrofitted it on my '57 sedan many years ago. It worked great. I look forward to seeing this beautiful car on the road again. Enjoy! Jim

Awesome find! I would just patch what is necessary, and keep it as original as much as possible. Have a paintless dent repair guy try to massage that roof and hood dent out. He may not be able to save the paint, but he might be to minimize the body work. I think that old school starter and brake system is so cool, you should try to preserve them if possible.

I was once the proud owner of a 55 Nomad. I traded it for a 23 T roadster. I loved the roadster but the Nomad was a beautiful car. I would love to have it back but it is what it is. Congratulations on your new car.
