I remember me, as my Grandma speak to herself: "I can`t smile without you"?! She lost her dentures. I could feel with her. Anyway, the Story had a happy ending. And my Grandma her teeths.
This version seems to be slightly different to the version from the "A Kind of Hush" album. As well as not having the ad-libbing in the intro, the album version has the lyrics: I can't laugh, and I can't walk, I'm finding it hard even to talk Instead of: I can't laugh, and I can't sleep, I don't even talk to people I meet.
This version of the song was recorded in 1977. So there are two versions, the first version is the one found on A Kind of Hush (recorded in 1975/1976), and then this version.
This is weird. I have the LP "there's a kind of hush" and the arrangement is different. The begging part is just instrumental, then Karen's voice stars to sing. The "ahhhhh" of her is not on the album version and the flute isn't there, and I have a stereo version.
@John Collins 7 years later, can't even recall making this comment, but I can tell her eyes are not smiling, didn't know she died by suicide, how sad 😔

@John Collins Karen Carpenter didn’t die of suicide. She died from overuse of ipecac, a complication of anorexia nervosa. She always had Richards live and support. It was her mom Agnes who cared more for Richard that never supported her. Her anorexia was caused by her being “pudgy” in her high school days. Her fame made her even more self conscious.
Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice 💜
以前在地獄怪客2中聽到這首音樂,就覺得這首歌很美聽原唱後更美了,讓人感覺到有一位能互相在乎彼此的人真的是一件很美好的事情。
The best version of this song

Karen's voice and the whole expression of tones and emotions put in there is just so adorable.

I am a loyal Barry Manilow fan, but I have to admit that the Carpenters did a better job with this song.

this is the single release, 'b' side of 'calling occupants...' slightly slower tempo, has the distinctive clarinet lick in the bridge
