Hello, I’m here in Long Island NY. Smack in the middle of the island. I purchased a windmill palm 8years ago. Also have banana plants, (no bananas) and Canna. We are in the month of June and all the plants are still growing. My Tropical Plants are located on the south side of the house. During winter, I take a frost blanket (bag) and put all the fronts into it,and wrap trunk with frost blanket. All good and healthy!

Yeah, long island is zone 7-8 so that doesn’t surprise me at all. If you visit landcraft nursery they grow a wide range of Tropicals. The ocean moderates your climate.

Oh my goodness, I was just thinking of planting one of those.. I love Charleston low country ..palms remind me of that area..
I've got the same situation as yourself..huge crape myrtle by my porch..I need to take out, but I don't have the heart to remove..
    Thanks for sharing

The first 60° day, you can dump hydrogen peroxide, and/ or copper fungicide into the crown of palms to kill any bacterial or fungal problems that might swiftly kill them. Also Sabal ‘Louisiana’ and Brazoria are eventually trunking type palms, and will grow much much larger than the typical species. I bet you the second windmill dying had less to do with root disturbance, and more to do with the chemicals and processes, maybe hot concrete or something + maybe excessive ice in the crown. Happy new year!

i’m here in south jersey 7b and i just got my first windmill palm this month. it has surprisingly put on lots of growth this month despite being transplanted this month into the ground. it had one spear that was completely rock hard not opened at all and not it has began to open very quickly and now there’s a new spear! it’s crazy!! it’s in total around 2-3 feet tall and the trunk is probs one foot maybe a bit less. very surprised with this growth. not sure if that means i can do some fertilizer yet because i do want to do some so it can establish further. i really want it to focus on root growth this year in case this winter is crazy. these past few winters have been so mild so im hoping for a mild winter so it can establish more. thank you for your video!!

Awesome! Yes you can fertilize, that will make it grow roots and establish well. These started off as tiny seedlings so they really will grow large quickly!

I’m in South Louisiana. I’m thinking about adding a palm to my landscape. How long did it take for the backyard windmill palm to go from 1 ft to the height shown?
