- Join me on a flight from Chicago to Raleigh on a E175 regional jet. I'll go over exactly how basic economy works on American Airlines and what to expect when you fly with them. So hopefully no worries about when you book your next ticket!

LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3
Tie two or three colored ribbons of different lengths around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it.
Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the turnstile...
Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long. Cut the ends at 45 degrees then seal the end with one drop of Super Glue to prevent fraying. If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/2” or so, they will all show up no matter how they drape.
Tie the 3 ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. It is too short to catch on anything.
You can see this ribbon from 40 feet away. Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case. This way, it won’t slide around. This knot does not loosen.
Put your phone number on one ribbon using a permanent Sharpie.
Example: “Owner 454-333-7878”
Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique.
Stand by the output hole port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing the piece.
Tie your skiies, duffel bag, and what ever with matching ribbons-even your computer case.
If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself.
Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible.
Pleasant color combinations:
Red and blue
Chartreuse and purple
Orange and light blue
Orange and yellow
Gray and pink
Green and yellow
Red and Green
Red and Gold
Light blue and light green
The third ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan
Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like”.
Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape.

Unless you book the top tier coach fares which can be as high as first class you will pay baggage fees. Looks like the main thing you would give up with basic economy would be seat selection. This is legacy US carrier standard

Please be vary careful buying basic economy tickets, as they are not refundable, you will loose your money if you cancel it, and you are not able to make any changes to your flight, like different time or dates. You are 100% take it or leave it when you purchase your flight. It's a great ticket if you are looking to save money but you MUST take that in consideration.
Are you sure because I am seeing that they reimburse u once canceled 24hrs in advance.

Both, the same seat must be in two places at the same time defying the laws of physics. It must be under you to support the passenger's weight while still being in front of you to support the tray table. Neither Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking could explain it. :) THX for the support!

Basic economy don’t allow one carryon suitcase and personal item bag?
Did you get to pick which seat you wanted from the remaining available when you checked in, or was it randomly selected?
It's randomly selected when you check in, but when you get to the airport, your allowed to change to an available seat that's within your section for an extra cost. (Like you can't go from economy to first)
I flew basic economy on United, from DEN-LHR. international is a little different, on United domestic, you don’t get a full size carry on or seat selection, but since with international standard, you get a free checked bag, basic gets you a full size carryon, which was all I needed. I did pay for seat selection, though. After everything, the round trip price was $488, standard economy was 620, I call that a win.
Wow! That sounds like a great deal! Last time I flew on United internationally was in regular economy. I would have flown basic, but with my group's circumstances it was better to book everyone's tickets in regular economy. But still, your trip was one heck of a deal!
Andrew's Aviation exactly, for some people it’s great, but not for others. I’m always on orbitz, searching deals to various places, and then when I find one, I’ll book directly through the airlines website, to save the fee. My next trip is to climb Kilimanjaro, whenever I can get there, found a ticket for under 1000 round trip, standard economy on jet blue to jfk, and Qatar the rest of the way through Doha. I need standard for that trip, because I’ll have checked luggage for trekking equipment. It’s just a matter of what you need.
That trip sounds freaking awesome! I'm super jealous now lol. I actually search for trips the same way but on Kayak and Expedia but always book on airline official websites. Hope you enjoy your trip when it comes up, cause from the airlines you chose, it'll be such a nice experience!

Check in starts at 24 hrs before. Either choice is acceptable, but I would advise doing both.
How tall are you? wanted to know to gauge the leg room lol

Absolutely! As long as there's overhead bin space left (which isn't always garunteed but usually there is) and one of your bags fits under the seat, you'll be just fine :)
hey i have a flight like this tomorrow, are there plugs on the seats for charging and stuff and are the snacks free?

Regarding baggage, if I have three checked in baggage weighing 23 kg each. How much extra USD I will have to pay
If your flight is domestic, then it will cost $30USD for the first bag, $40USD for the second bag, and $150USD for the third bag. Doing quick maths, the total comes to $220USD. This is of course assuming that you have no loyalty status with American and that you're the only one traveling. If you have other travelers with you, pricing may vary upon the number of (adult) people in your group.
If your flight is international, then it really depends on the country you're traveling to/from. If you have American's credit card and have loyalty status with them, then you're allowed at least one free bag with each additional bag following the same pricing scale: ($30, $40, $150, etc).

did you have the option to pay to change your seats? and could you pay to change them 24 hours before your flight? i know you get your boarding passes 24 hours in advance to your flight, but let’s say you’re traveling with family and all your seats on your boarding passes were spilt up and you wanted to see if you could be seated together. so, are you able to pay to pick your seats 24 hours or later before your flight? thanks.
Absolutely! Once you check in, you'll be assigned seats, and after the check-in process is complete, go BACK to your booking and see where your group is sitting. It's likely that the algorithm will put you all close together. If you're all not together, you are still able to change different people's seats to anywhere you want for a fee as long as they are still available. I'd recommend checking in the second the clock shows 24 hours prior to the flight, but don't worry, it's not a fight for boarding line-up like Southwest! :)
Also, you can change seats when you print boarding passes at the airport as well!

Hey, just piggy backing off of your question. I keep reading that we can do the "pay for seats" option 48 hours in advance. So is it actually 24 not 48?
So you can’t have a carry on on basic economy?
What if I have one check in bag? Then I pay 30$ at check in. It still would be a good deal. If Economy costs 400$ and basic economy costs 350$, you book basic economy (350$) and check in a bag for 30$ you would still be saving 20$.
if i have a layover flight let’s say DTW to FLL do i have to go through FLL TSA?
You won't have to go through TSA again as long as you don't leave the gate area. I had a layover at FLL and I left to get food (wasn't anything open at the time at the airport) and I had to go through TSA again all because I left.
first time flying on basic economy american airlines, so for bags im actually trying to pack 6 weeks worth of stuff how can i do that so i can bring a duffle bag like a med size or large size and put it in the overhead or a suitcase and bring a small duffle bag and put it under my seat????? really confused and need help and if i wanna pay 30$ for a large suitcase i can right???
@Ky Taylor, American's official carry-on baggage allowance is 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) for the overhead bin and anything the size of a school backpack will be allowed under the seat. If you wanna get really technical, take some measuring tape and measure your bags. They don't have to be exact, but make sure they're only a couple centimeters off if they go over so they still fit in the overhead bin. If you get on the aircraft and find out your bag is too big or there's not enough space, it should be gate checked to your final destination for free.
Now for your large suitcase, you can absolutely pay the $30 fee! You can do so online (recommended) or at the airport (price will rise). Like I mentioned in the vid, basic economy is just a deconstructed economy ticket. If you don't want to pay for extra things liked checked baggage or seat assignment, you don't have to. If you want those things, nothing is stopping you from adding them on.

Hello! I'm assuming you bought your tickets and seat(s) at the same time. If that's the case, Priceline should have given you a specific confirmation number that you can plug into American's official website along with your name. You can check all your flight details including seat selection there. If you see that you have your desired seat on American's site then you're all set.
If you're not confident in the flight (and seat) information that Priceline is presenting you AND you can not confirm it on American's official site, call American Airlines as soon as you can to officially confirm. It's a hit or miss, but they might refer you to Priceline's customer service. Either way, one of them will be able to assist and it'll be a very short conversation.
If you purchased your seats before purchasing the ticket but then fully bought the tickets under the same trip confirmation number, then you should be all set. Still, I would call American or Priceline just to be sure.

If you can make it fit under your seat, then no. It you're talking about a GIANT backpack then yes.

First, I'm assuming that you paid for a seat for the one year old. If it's a lap child, you can't use a car seat. So I recommend double checking with American Airlines on their policy with infants, carseats, and strollers. www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/special-assistance/traveling-children.jsp
Here's my summary of it:
According to American's "traveling with children" website page: customers are allowed to take one stroller and one carseat free of charge.
Any stroller over 20lbs must be checked at the ticket counter and all others must be gate checked. Also, make sure that your carseat is FAA approved, cause if it's not, you risk facing complications with TSA/the AA crew.

@@aylinsalvarez9746 No problem, I love answering questions! So it really depends on your aircraft type and how full it is, but most of the time all the bags will fit overhead. For the best chance at keeping your bag with you, try and be at the front of your boarding group so you'll have more room to fit your bag in the bin once on the aircraft. You'll also love American Airlines. They're a great US carrier and there's a reason they've been around for so many years!

Can you move to another seat if available?
@Sean, yes. When you check in, the system will automatically assign you a seat. You'll be able to see which seat that is and change it for a fee if you wish. Unfortunately, change = money, so it's a loss no matter if you move (doesn't matter where). Also, you can change it at the airport for a fee if there's still other available seats. Technically, the only FREE place you can do it is on the aircraft after boarding if there's no one sitting in your desired seat. Hope that helps!

I can see how enough times on a small aircraft like the E170 can take a toll on a traveler XD. Another option could be the same flight on the A320 or 737 (which they had pre pandemic).
