The MBT-70 (German: KPz 70) was a 1960s German-U.S. joint project to develop a new main battle tank, which was to be equipped with a number of advanced features. It utilized a newly developed hydropneumatic "kneeling" suspension and housed the entire crew in the large turret. The MBT-70 was armed with a 152mm XM150 gun/launcher, which could use conventional ammunition and the Shillelagh missile for long range combat. By 1969 the project was well over budget and Germany withdrew from the effort, developing a new main battle tank on their own instead (the Leopard 2). In the US the development continued for a short time, until in 1971 when Congress cancelled the program. The MBT-70 is the failed predecessor of the Leopard 2 and the M1 Abrams, the current main battle tanks of both countries.
MBT-70 (Main Battle Tank 70) (нем. KPz 70 ) (рус. Основной боевой танк 70) - совместный американо-немецкий проект по созданию перспективного основного боевого танка для вооружения армий обоих государств. Проект относится ко второй половине шестидесятых годов двадцатого века, основной целью проекта стало создание замены танку M60, способной превзойти перспективный основной танк СССР англ. Future Soviet Tank, FST, которым впоследствии оказался танк Т-64. В MBT-70 было воплощено множество оригинальных для своего времени технических решений, таких как низкий силуэт с расположением механика-водителя в башне танка, регулируемая гидропневматическая подвеска, применение комбинированной брони, дистанционно управляемая станция вспомогательного вооружения, и (на американском варианте) совмещённая с пусковой установкой управляемых противотанковых ракет 152-мм танковая пушка. Несмотря на относительную успешность проекта, в сентябре 1969 года Министерство Обороны США пересмотрело своё отношение к этой совместной программе, в основном по причине её высокой стоимости. В результате, 20 января 1970 года совместный проект был прекращён, разделившись на две независимые национальные программы, американскую XM803 и германскую Leopard II.

@@raiwserkoopa2221 No, this project failed because the countries tried different approaches that didn't work for the tank or the countries, the tech for the tank was used and you are already looking at 2 versions of the MBT 70 on steroids, they are called Leopard and Abrams.
It also shot missiles if im not mistaken
MBT-70 was way ahead of it's time, its design looks modern when I first saw it I thought it was a 1980 -2000 tank, I'm surprised

It's technology was also the reason for it's failure, as the MBT-70 became less of an mbt and more of a technology demonstrator masquerading as a combat vehicle towards the end of its development. After the cancellation of the MBT-70 project, the US tried to make a cheaper version (XM-803) which removed some of the more advanced and expensive features, however this did little to lower the tank's cost and that project was scrapped as well.

I have it too. I love it and i hate it. In World of Tanks Blitz, its 60-70 percent weaker than the real MBT 70. This tank doesnt belong in that game, espeacially not to Tier 9. For example, instead 1500 Ps Diesel engine in Blitz it has only 800 PS engine. Instead of 70 kph, it goes 40 kph. Also, i am sure it has more penetration with the HEAT ammo than 330mm like in Wot. In real life, it would have minimum 500mm RHA steel penetration with the WEAKEST type of Heat ammo. (We are talking about a long 152mm Caliber gun) 330mm was normal for 1950, but never for later tanks.

wrong, the xm-1 (general motors version and crysler verion) was the predecessor for the abrams not the mbt 70, it may look kinda abramsy but it is its own project

If you can buy a M1 or a Leopard, it is just a couple more pennies in the bucket to upgrade the equipment to be among the most modern, or atleast better than the Abrams and Leopard. Besides, neither Leo nor Abrams has a retractable 20mm AA turret or an autoloading 152mm Cannon/Launcher.

The tanks being built at the beginning of this video are not MBT70, the front hull hatch for the driver can be seen, MBT70 didn't have one in the hull.
It prevented the driver from getting disorientated so it'd probably be the actual version used
Colin Thorneycroft If they put a driver in the hull, that would ruin most of its advantage. It was so short because the driver was in the turret.
at 0:50 and 2:11 onwards its a MBT-70/KPZ-70, but from 1:04 to 2:09 its a XM 803 which was a chear variant of the MBT-70/KPZ-70 because it was too expensive

that was one of the reasons they didnt like this tank, driver got sick because of that
@@kthec1298 it was not only that because there was too many problems starting with the mechanism of 20mm cannon that was always jamming including the overcomplicated system or the autoloader handling caseless ammunition, the ammunition also had a tendency to "cook-off", or fire prematurely. In plain English it was ruined by the use of too many untried and unproven technologies not to mention the bickering between metric and inches that delayed very much not to mention the incredible cost overrun. A fuck up of first magnitude....
Was this a heavy tank or a medium tank?
Noah Weintraub it's a main battle tank, hence "MBT" 70. You can probably compare this to a medium tank, but the more modern beasts aren't really classified as mediums and heavies anymore
This tank could still easily be in service, just improve it's armor and ammunition and it will be totally fine
It's armor isn't as effective as our modern day tanks but it's gun is way more effective it's a 152mm cannon that is bigger than any other modern tank gun today it makes up for it's lack of armor especially APFSDS rounds.

@Edgar Alvarez, the MBT-70 and KPZ-70 failed because it got too expensive and then the west german government pulled the plug on further development on the KPZ but the US continued and built a cheaper variant which is the XM 803 (the MBT-70 with out the 20mm gun on the top) but it still didnt meet the requirements so they started a new but similar project called the XM-1 which eventually led to the M1 Abrams

This tank was a prototype that the Germans and Americans were building together but it was cancelled however the Abrams and leopard 2 were built off its schematics well the Abrams at least im not sure about the leopard

1. The technology maybe still 'unavailable' (MBT/Kpz-70 was from around '60, which was about half of Cold War. While WW2 were back in '40)
2. The MBT-70 was a joint development between West German and US to counter new tanks on the Warsaw Pact side

Simple: They didnt need it. Germany in WW2 had anyway problems with their steel and oil ressources. It would be time, money and material wasting to put them against M4, Cromwell, T-34 and IS-1. Also, no chance to put an ATGM in a tank back in the 40s. They didnt even have real ATGM, spaced armors and neither a compact 1500 PS engine back in the 40s. The 1100 Ps for Maus for example was half of the size of the whole MBT 70 tank.

Not really, the driver got motion sickness due to his position in the turret. Also, both Germany and USA has different doctrines with their tanks (simply, different preferences). So, they drop it and the US got Abrams and Germany got Leopard.

OptimalOptimus50 OK, then take a MBT-70 and kit it out with the newest tech and equipment, then it would beat a M1. Maybe give it a twin 20mm turret as well, instead of just a single 20mm in the turret so they can use the two guns if they want to.
Honestly if you put it's 152mm gun on the Abrams it would be perfection.
The Abrams has its flaws it's gun is only 120mm vs 152mm but it's armor is better than the kpz70 and just and tough as the leapord 2.

a bigger gun isnt automaticly a better tank, the bigger the gun the faster it breaks therefore it cost more to maintain one tank, the russian where trying to put a 152 gun on the t-80 (OBJ 292) bigger gun bigger ammo = less ammo and its heavier
the germans now want to upgrade the leo to an 130mm gun but 152mm is at the time only used by artillery guns
